The output device is only used for MC. My chain is MacBook Pro > JRiver 30.0.66 > Lynx E22. I've used this chain for over seven years, and I've never had this problem.

Following up after some testing tonight…
Exclusive control is on. It has been on the whole time.
I went ahead and turned off the setting that auto configures output settings on playback error. After the selection and playback of a few albums and tracks, I receive an error message which says that playback could not be started on the output device using the particular format. So, I click OK, immediately select the exact same file, and the file plays fine. I can’t discern a pattern for when and why this happens. The problem occurs with a variety of sample rates.
Thankfully, I no longer have to go into DSP Settings to update my playback settings when this happens, so that’s a win, but it would be great to figure out the underlying issue.

Not sure of the overall issue, but one thing I’ll mention is that you have to fully stop a track before you make any changes. If you are merely in pause you will encounter issues. So press the stop button or double click the pause button.

Thanks. I always stop the track fully before making any changes.

Get to the point that you can reproduce the error, turn on logging, get it to fail, turn off logging and post it here.
The audio device open is logged heavily
