Media Editor crashes
« on: February 24, 2003, 04:55:54 pm »

Starting at JimH's request.

For about the last 3 builds or so, Media Editor crashes every time I attempt to launch.  As an experiment, I went back to v9.0.88 and extracted the Media Editor file from it.  I then opened and Media Editor and it loaded!  As a further test, I decided to see how far back I needed to go to get ME to load, and as it turns out the last version of ME that worked was from v9.0.109.  I checked the file itself and saw the following:

Media Editor File Version:  1.1.35.0
Date Created:  2/24/2003
Size:  532KB

So since I've replaced the new Media Editor with the older file, it loads without a problem.

It loads up for me but as stated in a thread before I get this error...

I am getting an error with media editor when I split wav files. I drag and drop a wav file into the editor, usually one side of a vinal record, and then proceed to split it up. I select some of the file and copy it, then create a new window using the new button, then paste into that window. All is well, I can play the wav and further edit it, but when I go to save it the editor crashes and totaly dissapears. In previous versions the error has shown itself as 'failing to write to buffer' and after pressing the ok button several times the application locked. Now it just dissapears after hitting the save button. HELP!!!

Sorry I hosed up the last attempt to reply to this message.  I had same problem with same solution - return to v.35.  On v.40 all of my 'Save as...' or 'Save selection as...' attempts resulted in ME closure.  Attempted saved tracks ranged for duration from 15 minutes to 5 seconds.  I ran ME with 86% of system resources available.  Other info enclosed:

I am curently runnign build .120 and Media Editor is working okay.

But what i have noticed is if you play anything from within ME it runs the PC at 100% until you stop it.

Convert / open and save etc. are okay.

Mike, Matt is running a thread about slow bits (shown below), it may help if you post it ther aswell.  Coz I have other bits of MC that do the same.

On earlier versions I got an "Error writing to buffer"
message and then the ME locks... Any ideas...

JimH, I have about 12Gb free on the C drive which
is where the Windows\Temp dir is. Is that where windows stores all its temp buffer files?

JimH,
Some more info on the save crash in ME...

Windows temp dir is empty now...

Editing the file  C:\Gail Vinal\Elton John\Captain Fantastic\side1.wav  <-----  264Mb

ME  creates 265 objects called

Media Editor Chunk File.dat
...
Media Editor Chunk File (264).dat

These files all have 0 byte file sizes...

If i select some of the file and copy it then the temp file
Media Editory Clipboard.dat with size 0 is created

Next I create a new file with the default values for rate etc...

Media Editor Chunk File (265).dat  is created...

When I paste the clipboard info into this file

Media Editor Chunk File (266).dat
...
Media Editor Chunk File (321).dat

files are created all with size 0

If i now try to save as from the menu ME goes away and all the temp files are removed...
