I have a question for you guys about Video Cards.

My Computer:

1.   Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake 4.0 Ghz
2.   Gigabyte Z270P-D3 LGA 1151 DDR5 Motherboard
3.   Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 X 8GB) DDR4 3600 MHz
4.   MSI GTX 1070 8GB GAMING X
5.   Creative Sound Blaster Z SE Internal
6.   MZHOU PCIE 2.0 X 1 to SATA 4 Port Adapter Card
7.   Intel Motherboard Liquid Cooler - BXTS13X
8.   CORSAIR 750W Power Supply
9.   SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB NVMe M.2
10.   SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Internal SSD
11.   SanDisk SSD PLUS 500 Gb  Internal SSD

Windows 7 64 bit Operating System.


Here is my question:
I use Media Center 30 to listen to music using the Spectral analyzer (bouncing boxes) on a secondary monitor which is a TCL 4k Flat Screen set to 1080 Resolution. My primary monitor is a HP 1080.

I also have a camera system around my office with 16 cameras.
I can bring up the cameras and monitor what’s happening around my office.

Last night I was listening to music on the TCL and had the camera system up on my primary monitor. What I noticed is the Bouncing Boxes weren’t smooth with the camera system.
They were jerky with the camera system up on the other monitor.

My question is am I dealing with limitations of my Graphics Card?

I can buy an RTX 3070ti  which is supposed to be 98% faster than the GTX-1070.

Will this solve the problem with the jerky Bouncing Boxes?
And for the record, I do have Hardware Acceleration turned on and the Camera system displays all 16 cameras on one screen.
You can double-click one of the cameras to bring that camera up to Full screen.

I don’t mind buying the RTX 3070ti but I need some advice on whether this should solve the problem.
I don’t want to waste money if it won’t make any difference.

Hard to say since you have a fairly unique setup. I'd recommend benchmarking your performance and watching your temperatures and resource usage under similar load. W7 is quite old, too, I wonder if you'd have a better luck on W10 or W11.

Leaving Windows 7 is not a an option.
I could go into all the reasons but it would just waste space.

Let's make it simple.
Does the Spectrum Analyzer place a reasonable amount of demands that an older Graphics Card ( older than GTX-1070) might not be able to cope with?

I know the Developers read this Board and I am not an expert on these matters.
I have checked temps and the Spectrum analyzer does not raise temps more than a couple degrees.

Simply put, from the Developers point of view would they consider a GTX-1070 more than adequate for JRiver 30 or would they consider it a little dated based on the hardware requirements JRiver requires?

I guess another way of putting it is every program has minimum System Requirements.
Does a GTX-1070 meet or exceed those requirements since I am sure the Spectrum Analyzer deals with Frame-Rates like a Game or other similar programs.?

I don't mind buying a faster card but having an idea of what JRiver feels are minimum Graphic Card requirements would really be helpful.

And if those minimum Requirements are Posted somewhere just point me to them.

We don't make specific hardware recommendations.  Sorry.  Just too many variables.

You might try running a benchmark in MC.  It's under the Help menu.  Then paste the results here.

What is the Bouncing Boxes?  Is it our visualization?

Bouncing Boxes is the Spectrum Analyzer.

Antivirus is Zone Alarm and that may be it come to think of it.
It scans everything in real time whether it comes over the internet or a file on a computer.
That could very easily slow everything down.

One Question.
Besides the opening screen, does JRiver maintain any internet traffic if a file is being played off a hard drive?
If it does then ZoneAlarm could slow it down by constant monitoring of any traffic going out or coming into the computer.

I don't know what your anti-virus is doing but JRiver definitely makes them go nuts.  Did you find the anti-virus thread?

It may be the Anti-Virus.
I am talking to their Tech Support and it monitors everything coming in and out of the internet and monitors real time any files being played. I am trying to get them to show me how to turn it off. A link to your Anti-Virus Thread would also be appreciated.

Correction:
It was the Anti-Virus.
They recently upgraded to Next-Gen and it monitors everything in Real-Time.
The traffic coming in from my camera system, it monitors JRiver and whatever it is doing and even the audio files as they are being played. 
No wonder, it was jerky.
They showed me how to exempt the two programs from real time monitoring so this should fix the problem.
I am sorry I wasted your time with this.


One final question and this will be the last:

I have been buying JRiver for over 10 years and I have one final question and please forgive me.
I am not trying to be annoying.

I use the computer for the internet, my camera system, and JRiver for music and watching 4k movies in a .mkv format.
I do not play games.

I am a 65 year old Doctor who has been Practicing for over 40 years.
The point is you reach an age ( I am there) where you realize you are not going to live forever and you can't take it with you.
So if I want to spend some money I will spend it.

So simply, in light of what I do with the computer would there be any advantage at all with buying the RTX-3070ti?
If there would be any advantage at all, even minor, I don't mind buying the card.
If it would make absolutely no difference I will find something else to waste money on.

This is the last question, I promise.

If it's working, there's no clear advantage to upgrading the video card.  I'd spend the money on speakers.

This is the answer. A 3070ti is almost certainly overkill for your needs. You could pump up MadVR settings a bit (it's not clear if that's what you use for your 4K movie playback) but it's a marginal improvement beyond what the 1070 with rational settings is capable of.

I didn't realize they had changed it where it was monitoring every process, program, and internet traffic in real-time.
After learning that I realized with all the data it was trying to watch it was probably like trying to shove an elephant through a funnel.
Once I exempted JRiver and my camera software the problem stopped.

As I said, I don't know much about this.

I thought the Spectrum Analyzer with all the bouncing boxes was placing a strain on the Graphics card rendering since the Spectrum Analyzer Full Screen is a pretty busy visual with all the different boxes acting independently.
I just thought I might have finally exceeded the GTX-1070's ability.

I appreciate all your help and saving me a lot of money in the process.
Like I said, I didn't mind spending the money if it would help but if it is pointless why waste the money?

To the OP,  Glad that you got your anti-virus issues sorted but Windows 7 is no longer supported by MS and so most other companies won't support any of their software running on that operating system. While I appreciate that there may be reasons that you want to stay on Windows 7, any external connectivity like internet or emails is a huge risk/source of liability particularly if you have confidential information stored on it or accessed from it.

I say this as a long time employee of a company that has to temporarily keep some crucial PCs running Windows 7 with no support/protection for the next few months due to proprietary software that will be replaced soon to permit an operating system upgrade to Windows 10. We've had to severely limit all external traffic on these pcs trying to avoid attacks/compromise so if at all possible I'd suggest limiting your Win 7 pc's external traffic as much as possible.
