What features will version 31 have
« on: April 21, 2023, 02:34:16 am »

With the new update for the next version here I was thinking what will be the new features.

I know is too soon to ask, but considering you already hand the offer about this new version it will probably have something there.

Care to share or we wait for it?

Thanks

Thanks

I've just upgraded from V26 to V31.

My big feature request (hopefully it has already happened, I don't know!), is that when V32 comes out, that I'm not continuously nagged to upgrade every single time I start Media Centre (and have to X it out to close it).
It is super annoying! Nothing wrong with being reminded but I need to be able to switch it off permanently (Reminds me of when Microsoft were pestering us to update to Windows 10).
Otherwise I was extremely happy with V26.

Disable auto-updates and it goes away.

Makes sense (wish I knew it before), but I still would like auto-updates on and ability to dismiss the nag screen permantly.
I guess if I completely disabled Windows update, I could have avoided the Windows 10 nag screen  :)

I would like to know what are going to be the new features in MC31 as well.

I was hoping for new features in JRVR and BluRay playback in MC30, which is why I bought it when it was announced. But I kept using MC29 until 2 weeks ago because there was pretty much nothing done on them the entire MC30 release. There were only two things done in MC30 regarding them that I noticed: a subtitle selection fix for a bug I reported for MC29, and the addition of software deinterlacing (which I am not interested in as I use HW deinterlacing). The only reason I downloaded the MC30 installer and tried it out was because I thought I discovered a bug in MC29 and wanted to see if it's the same in MC30... well, it was not a bug, and was the same in MC30, so I could have just kept on using MC29 till now.

I don't want to purchase MC31 if there's nothing done regarding JRVR or DVD/BluRay playback in MC31 either.

Quite a lot was done in MC30.  You could read the Release Notes on the wiki.

I suggest posting the specific features you're interested in

I would say there was quite a lot done to video in MC30 but it would be fair to say that quite a bit of it is work on which subsequent, user facing, features can be built. For example video analysis/black bar detection in itself is not so useful but combine it with jrvr making use of that & it's v useful.

With that in mind, I think you either wait til the job is done and then pay or you fund the ongoing development and hope it gets there in the end. Both choices are valid but obviously you need enough of the latter to exist otherwise it's not going to get there in the end. In any case, seems likely that a detailed MC31 announcement post must be coming soon given the board is public so there can't be long to wait if you're in the "wait and see" camp :)

I just bought mc31. Hopefully there will be improvements regarding dynamic tonemapping because I’m using a projector and this is the (for me) most important feature.

What also would be cool if JRiver could play my hd DVDs. I got a combo drive which plays hd dvd and Blu-ray and dvd. Anydvd is also installed.

The advance payment for the savings it represents is very good, Ok, but I think they should inform about the improvements that we will obtain when going from v30 to v31, and although they deserve my trust, I do not like a blind reservation

The first MC release for me was MC28, because I heard about JRVR. Both MC28 and MC29 had a lot of impressive work done on the video renderer, subtitles rendering, BluRay playback, DolbyVision and HDR support. I was surprised to see no major changes (except the addition of the software deinterlacing) in MC30. Like I said, I was using MC29 till two weeks ago as I was missing nothing.

I did not ask explicitly for anything in my previous post, as I already saw in the past that it does not seem to have any relevance to what gets developed during a release. It seems  like the focus of the development for a release is already decided by the time the new release announcement, so I just asked to see what the plan is.

Going by a post on the same topic in the MC30 section of the forum, seems like not revealing what will be worked upon is intentional to make people pay upfront a smaller fee even if they later discover they will not get anything interesting to them in return: "You can wait and see or take a chance." I've already played the "Insert coin, try again" game once and won nothing, was hoping not to once more. :)

Since I don't want this to sound like I'm just throwing a tantrum as there's nothing to do anymore for JRVR & DVD/BluRay playback, here's a list of fixes and features I asked for in the past:
- fixing playback of BluRay and DVD ISO files straight from Theater View in MC, so that ISOs are not mounted twice, in two virtual disc drives, when you start playback of such an iso file (very old bug, reported since MC28 several times);
- make the Theater View "Explore" plugin, which is a file browser, act like a file browser; this means display file names not metadata "title", and let the user browse inside a BluRay or a DVD folder to play an individual m2ts file for instance;
- an update of the libbluray library; it's now at v1.3.4 while MC is using a commit a bit after v1.3.0;
- support for the remote color keys for BluRay playback (as libbluray supports sending the keys to it)
- change the JRVR gamma processing option into an useful feature, such as to let you view video content as if your physical display gamma was set to 2.4 while your actual display gamma is 2.2 for instance; I manually change the physical display gamma from 2.2 (for PC work) to 2.4 when I want to watch a movie in MC, as leaving it to 2.4 all the time is too dark for PC work, and that could be taken care of by gamma processing in MC instead

Bogdan,
It doesn't sound like a tantrum at all.  It's more like ordinary whining.

If you think there is a bug, report it with enough detail that we can duplicate it.  For something complex, start a thread and link to it from the build thread.  But if you're using an old version, there's no point.  Maybe that's why you think nothing changed in MC30.

We update libraries when there is a good reason and when we think they are stable.  We don't update because it's newer.

I always try to be detailed in my forum posts. Here are threads I created previously:

[BUG] The Play/Pause keyboard media key mounts a DVD/BluRay ISO file twice
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,132821.html

Theater mode Explorer view behavior change request
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,132342.html

libbluray update request - where I also say how remote control color buttons for BluRay playback can be used
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,135625.html

[Feature request] MCC commands for the red/green/yellow/blue buttons
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,132822.html

JRVR: Gamma processing question
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,133499.html

If these threads are not detailed enough, please let me know.

I am using MC30 right now, as I've already said twice in the posts above.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for a great product.
Like most users I am interested in what new features are coming in v31.
My interests are purely for music (one day I will get around to my movie/TV series library).
I really liked the Spotlight addition in MC 29, which is my current iteration. I noted that there was a heavy lean towards video in v30, I therefore didn't see the need to go up to v30.
Is that the case again in v31, or is there anything for us music freaks to go nuts about?
Thanks

Sometimes you can back up to get to where you were.

I often save a post so I don't lose it, then edit it.

Dr. Funk,
There will be plenty for people who only care about music.

Have you looked at Cloudplay recently?  It's great!

cncb and Brad added Android Auto to JRiver for Android.  Carplay is coming in JRemote.

Spotlight has changed since MC29.

You can expect more and more of the same.  I hope that's enough for you.

One request for new version I may add.
Link to web to be expanded to various view not just list mode;
Possibility to act like a hyperlink where we can add text without altering the link connection.

Are you thinking of showing links in views like Cloudplay?

The trick is that links are only meant to be shown with files today.  They have a search like this:
http:////www.google.com//search?q=Hexify([Search])

That needs a file to build the search.  Or would there be some way we could support in a view like Cloudplay?

Thanks.

Well, on Cloudplay you have only the Artist on hyperlink on which it will send you to the Spotlight. If we have something similar like that it will be a good change.

Generally in the past they don't post what they're thinking about adding in the new Media Center version until they've added it. Sometimes new features are added spontaneously from user suggestions too. Wait until a NEW in MC31 topic appears, and that should list the new features as they are added.

Most text editors, including this forum, delete a word with ctl-del.

I do a lot of tag editing and really miss this editing feature in MC.

I would suggest a few area to explore in the new versions.

With video, perhaps a tool to scan files and when possible fix problems that impact bitstream output?  The latest JRVR video engine is pretty slick, but I still have a file or two where I can't output a bitstream.

Also, perhaps more conversion options for compressing video files.   I have been dubbing home movies using a sophisticated card from Blackmagic, and their video editing is rather confusing.  I have used the tools with JRiver with good success but there aren't many options for managing the conversions.

For audio, a few thoughts.

First, improve the handling of DSD.   To wit, I would suggest that JRiver convert SACD ISO files to DSF etc. without going through PCM as an intermediary step.  Also, perhaps the capability to create a DST ISO file from multiple DSF cuts (custom compilations).   In my case, that would also include stripping out just the stereo track from a stereo/multichannel disc but get back the lossless compression of DST.

Second, possibly increase options from SOX resampling.
