ATSC 3.0 - Silicon Dust HD HomeRun Flex 4K
« on: April 27, 2023, 11:45:46 pm »

The major networks just started broadcasting in ATSC3.0 a few weeks ago in the SF Bay area, so I bought an HD Homerun Flex 4K .
I'm not subscribing to the Silicon Dust DVR/EPG service.

I did a channel scan in Media Center, and it found channels >100 which are in HEVC 1080p/AC-4 audio.
I selected the OTA guide. I got EPG for most of the OTA channels I can receive, except for the ATSC 3.0 channels.
Is there a way to get the OTA program guide for these channels too ?
Alternately, is there any way to piggyback the program guide off the corresponding ATSC 1.0 channels ? I didn't see a "map" function like there is in some other software (NextPVR) but could easily have missed it.

Silicondust's EPG is probably your best bet.  I use it and it's not expensive.

Are you referring to the $35/year Silicondust DVR service ?

Yes, you can copy the same guide info from ATSC 1.0 stations to their corresponding ATSC 3.0 stations in MC. It happens during the channel scan process, I just do not remember exactly which step.

Sadly, any non-SiliconDust app (that isn't A3SA licensed) won't be able to view/record ATSC 3.0 after stations turn on encryption/drm, which they already seem to be doing.

I’m in Tampa and one of the ATSC 3 stations is already encrypted and the Flex 4 can’t tune it.  I contacted HDHomeRun and they said they are working on it.

They are working on making them play in Silicon Dust apps like their Windows 10, Roku, Android apps... But not JRiver, or any other 3rd party "open source" apps.

It doesn't work in Silicon Dust apps  either.

Thanks. I'm sure it's a great option, but at least in the short-term to try out the new stations, I was hoping for something less expensive/free, especially as I'm already paying for an EPG service for several other programs (SchedulesDirect annual subscription for NextPVR, Plex lifetime pass, Emby monthly pass). I was hoping not to pay for an EPG a 4th time.

I'm not sure about your area, but it appears that the subtitles are missing from many ATSC 3.0 programs, while they are present on the corresponding ATSC 1.0 broadcasts. That is somewhat of a problem for me and my husband who are both non-native English speakers. We may stick with the ATSC 1.0 broadcasts until they fix that. I saw the missing subtitles on ATSC 3.0 in both the HD Homerun app (with live TV) and Emby app (both live and recorded ATSC 3.0 in this case). It's not the same on every program/channel, though. A few ATSC 3.0 programs to have the subtitles, but most don't.

Same situation with 114.1 KDTV-TV here . HD Homerun app says : "Unable to play channel: Content Protection Required"

I did not see anything to that effect during my channel scan yesterday in JRiver. I did see mapping options in other apps, which is why I asked about it.
Would really appreciate it if you figure it out.

I had to do "Television Reset" to get the option to show up where you copy/assign ATSC 1 guide to ATSC 3:
Tools > Options > Television > Setup > check only two boxes "clean up channels" and "clean up guide data" > Next > choose STREAMING from a network tuner > Next > Tuner Stream and only select tuner 0 + 1 > next > choose guide provider (I use xmltv - load from file) > next > SCAN > after scan finishes you should get "Load Program Guide", this is where you assign/match the ATSC 1 stations to ATSC 3 ones (see the screen shot)...

Thank you very much for these steps !

I'm stuck at the "choose guide provider" step. I don't have an XMLTV file to load.

What I was trying to do was to use the OTA (PSIP) guide from the ATSC 1.0 channels, and map that on the ATSC 3.0 ones.
I noticed that in your workflow, it's not possible to choose the OTA guide, probably because the "streaming" option was chosen.

Hmm, see if the following works for you....

Delete all tuner profiles, then create an "ATSC 1" profile:
Tools > Options > Television > Setup > check two boxes "clean up channels" and "clean up guide data" > Next > choose Antenna method > Digital ATSC select tuners 2 + 3 > Next > use OTA for guide > next > click SCAN > after scan is done, perform "load program guide" (takes a long time, even though I deleted all the "extra" sub-channels).

Add another profile for "ATSC 3"...
Tools > Options > Television > Setup > Next > choose Streaming method > use mc2xml for guide > next > click SCAN > after scan is done, perform "load program guide".... somehow, don't ask me how, it picked up the correct guide info.

Thanks again. I followed your instructions. When I added the second profile and selected mc2xml, I got a pop-up saying "Execution of external program was successful, but no data was loaded". And then, when trying to "load program guide", I got another message that "The program file is not valid, or does not contain any program information for channels in your channel list".

Ya, sorry I ran the steps again and it didn't work. Must have been some left over info in my system....

...as I'm already paying for an EPG service for several other programs (SchedulesDirect annual subscription...

Just use your SchedDir sub, run mc2xml externally, load the file it creates.
