Upgrade Problems
« on: May 10, 2023, 02:25:32 pm »

I'm trying to update MediaCenter 26 to MediaCenter 30 on Linux Mint 19.3.

I downloaded Mediacenter-30.0.93-amd64.deb from the link in this forum section. When I double click on this file, I get an error message:  "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable:libc6(>=2.28). I tried to update libc6 as follows:

roger@theaternuc:~$ sudo apt install libc-bin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libc-bin is already the newest version (2.27-3ubuntu1.6).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libllvm9 linux-image-5.3.0-53-generic linux-modules-5.3.0-53-generic
  linux-modules-extra-5.3.0-53-generic
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I'm stuck. It seems to be saying that I'm already at the highest version which is less than the requirement for the package.  Linux is mostly a mystery to me, and I don't know to do. I apologize if this is a duplicate message. I thought I posted this once already, but couldn't find it when anywhere after I was done. I have a hard time using this forum.

Thanks for any help

Thanks for your quick reply.  I did see this before posting, but there were lots of things in the description that I didn't understand and some things that were concerning to me because of my lack of knowledge about linux ... Things like accessing things from Git and private repositories.  I can certainly use this mechanism, but didn't want to run something that I didn't understand. Is it safe to use ?  I'm still wondering why I got the error message in the first place. Am I trying to install the GA release of the MC ?

Linux Mint 19.3 is probably too old to install MC30 or MC31 as it can't satisfy the libc6 dependency. You may need to upgrade Linux Mint to a newer version, e.g. Linux Mint 21.1, in order to install and use MC31.

Yikes.  That would have been nice to know before I paid the upgrade fee.  I ran a quick test and got the same dependency message on every package Newer than the one that I currently have installed.  Looks like I'm dead ended where I'm at. The older version still works and I guess I'll just stick with it.  I'll have to check about getting a refund.

Linux distros are less forgiving when it comes to backwards compatibility when it comes to using older apps on newer versions of a distro. Or forwards compatibility in this case, trying to use a newer app on an older version of a distro.

It's probably worth looking into upgrading Linux Mint 19 to 21 anyways since support for Linux Mint 19 ended last month and you won't receive support (e.g. security patches) anymore.

It's worth mentioning that JRiver only officially supports Debian with Media Center, but it unofficially works on other distros as long as the dependencies are met (however users are usually on their own if they encounter issues as it's not officially supported on anything else but Debian). MC30 is built on Debian Buster (maybe MC31 too unless they rebase to Debian Bullseye or the upcoming Debian Bookworm) which is newer than the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS that Linux Mint 19 is based off of, hence why it's too old to install MC30 due to the unmet dependency.

Thanks for that. I didn't realize that support ended for Mint 19. I'm dreading the prospect of updating linux. The JRiver NUC I can just wipe and reinstall, but the file server I set up is going to be a big problem. Fingers crossed that there's a migration tool available.

Yes, support for Linux Mint 19 ended in April 2023, so last month.

Would not recommend using it and would recommend looking into upgrading to Linux Mint 21.

installJRMC (see forum sticky) with the "--compat" and "--install local" switches will strip the minimum version requirements so that you can install MC on older distros.

MC26 was the last version based on Debian Jessie.
MC27-MC30 are based on Debian Buster
MC31- will be based on Debian Bullseye
The last build of MC30 will take a MC31 license.
