Rename file from properties doesn't work.  It changes the filename from MCs perspective but doesn't change the actual filename as stored on the harddrive. Thus once changed I can no longer access the file.  Am I loosing my mind? Didn't this work in 8.x?

Exact steps I followed:
Open file properties for song.
changed Artist from 5th Dimensions, to 5th Dimensions, The.
Commands > Apply changes.
Tools > Rename File from Properties

MC shows the new filename to be H:\Music\5th Dimensions, The - Aquarius
Examination of actual file reveals that file name is still H:\Music\5th Dimensions - Aquarius

I have done this procedured many times in the past with not problems.  Have I gone brain dead? Is there a step I ma missing?

It doesn't actually change the filename until you select something else in the list, or do "Apply Changes"

Could that explain it?

Otherwise, could the extra period be tripping it up?

If by extra period you are referring to the one after "The" , it was never there I just used it in my explanation as punctuation.
I tried "Apply Changes" after executing the "rename files from properties" tool and still it does not make the change to the actual file.
I do however get a message "Failed to update the following files:" and file in question is listed.
Could this be a windows issue?
Is there maybe some option that I need to set?

Last I Checked MC9 Rename (When Also Using The Dir Rule) had a problem with Some Disk Illegal Chrs Like "\"

The real name of the group does not change the fact that I cannot get the Rename Files from Properties function to work. Also I'm not applying the Dir option as I am not attempting to move the file.

What type of drive is your H:\ drive?  Also, you checked to make sure that the files aren't marked as "read only" for some reason?

Try in place editing (in the list view) with file tagging set to automatically update info. As soon as you go to the next field (tab,arrows,etc.) it should bring up an "Updating Tag" message box.

You'll know right away whether it is renaming or not. MC will not do any tag changing without the automatically update tags checked (options). Or, as Matt said, you 'Apply Changes'.

Then again, it could be a bug. But renaming works for me.

Files were Read- Only. Changed them to NOT Read-Only with no affect on the problem.

Tried editing filenames in "list view" with "Update tags when file info changes" (assumed that is what you meant by "file tagging set to automatic").  Made no difference, filename still not changed.

New symptom
   Ripped/imported new CD and was able to make changes to filenames successfully.

Not sure if this matters but I recently had to reload my entire library from backup CDs (mp3 format). At that time I added a new hard drive (WD180Gig). All music files were copied to their original location (C & D drives) and then moved via MC to H:\music which is a partition on the new 180G drive.

The directory could also be read only.  Try changing the name of the file from Windows Explorer to test.

Checked Directory and it is not Read-Only.

Very weird things going on. I have two files:

H:\Music\60's\1910 Fruitgum Co. - 1 2 3 Red Light.mp3
H:\Music\60's\1910 Fruitgum Co. - Simon Says.mp3

Everything about these two files are identical except for the name.
The first filename,(123 Red Light) I can change from within MC. The second filename, (Simon Says) I cannot change.
next I deleted Simon Says and reimported it and now I can change its filename from inside MC. ?
