MC installer for Linux – issues
« on: June 10, 2023, 05:07:30 am »

Hello everyone!

When I try to install MC 31.09.19 I end up with an error message (you’ll find the attachment below).

I’m not a very well-versed Linux user, so I guess I’m doing something wrong here.

I used Awesome Donkey’s step-by-step guide in the past and it worked flawlessly. Even MC29 – with the new installer – worked fine, but now it doesn’t seem to work.

Is there an easy fix for this?

Current MC build: 29.0.91 (64bit)

Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3

Cinnamon Version: 5.2.7
Kernel: 5.4.0-150

Thanks
Vic

Your Linux Mint is too out-of-date. You need to update to Linux Mint 21.1.

Thanks Awesome Donkey! I had to perform a clean install, but after that the installation went without a hitch. Unfortunately, in the process  I accidentally deleted my notes on how to configure the UFW for DLNA. I know 52100 – 52200 need to be open, furthermore SSDP 1900 also needs to be open, but I don’t remember the specific commands. Hopefully, a thorough google search will provide an answer.

Thanks AD!

installJRMC will automatically create the necessary firewall rules for you if you have ufw (or firewalld) installed.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, it didn't. It disabled the firewall completely, and when I enable it back my DLNA renderer is no longer discoverable.

installJRMC won't disable your firewall, if you are having specific issues then please run it with debugging on (--debug) and share the output, preferably in https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,135999.0.html.

You're probably right. According to some Ubuntu forums, following a clean OS install  UFW is disabled by default. Same  might be true for Linux Mint Cinnamon too. So I used the purge command to uninstall MC and then launched installJRMC again, this time I made sure UFW is on. Result - no change. When the UFW is on, the issue persists. When I disable UFW my DLNA renderer pops back.

installJRMC will open TCP ports 52100-52200 and UDP port 1900. AFAIK that should be sufficient for DLNA, but I don't use DLNA often so if there are additional ports that need to be opened please link me some info and I can look into adding them to installJRMC. But before going down that rabbit hole it's best to make sure that installJRMC is applying the firewall settings correctly on your system. Mint has a lot of gotchas/caveats that I've had to workaround in the past, maybe this is another one of those.

Assuming you meant 52100-52200, those are the ports.
