Can't rip CDs [Solved]
« on: August 21, 2023, 07:12:23 pm »

When I try to rip a CD after updating to MC31 I get the following message.....

The output directory could not be created for one or more files.
Please double-check the output directory in the ripping options.

I don't see an output directory in the ripping options. Someone please help.

Set the directory where you want to store ripped files.

Check the first line under Audio. It has the location that CD rips are stored in. Select a folder to store the files.  If it is a legal folder name, then if it is a shared folder, it might be a permission issue. The folder needs to be writeable.

Okay, got it to rip discs. When I try to burn a disc it says ....Error writing CD text and won't burn disc. The "write CD text" box is checked under burn options. What am I doing wrong now?

Bad drive?

Can you provide some details on what you're doing?

Audio disc?  Or Data disc?

I lost all my library when I upgraded toMC31. I am trying to build it back. I am trying to rip my CDs. It worked for a few now it will not rip at all. I tried to burn a CD I had ripped but it will not do it.

Did you try restoring from a backup?  MC makes them automatically.  Windows?

You have another thread here:  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,136171.msg943402.html#msg943402

where Awesome Donkey suggested the same thing, but you didn't reply.  Did you try it?

Now everytime I insert a disc, it gets ejected.
Regarding this part of your problem - I have seen it intermittently for a long time with an external USB CD drive (for audio rips), when I open (Eject) the drive from MC > Tree > Drives & Devices > Compact Disc > RMB menu Eject.  Exiting and re-opening MC does not help once it starts exhibiting this eject behavior.  It's like MC loses some aspects of communication with the drive, fails to establish full communications, or misreads some protocol.

Any one of 3 things always fixes it for me:
1) Reboot PC.  But this is generally too much trouble - there are easier remedies:
2) Unplug the CD drive's USB cable and re-plug it.  Without fail, MC then stops ejecting the CD and proceeds with reading it.
3) With MC running, open (Eject) the CD drive from RMB menu of a windows desk top shortcut.  Then always MC immediately reads the CD and marches on.

I find it difficult to nail down what causes this behavior, so I avoided posting it until now.  Hope this helps.

All my files disappeared. There were none in backup. Everything in my music folder is gone. I'm trying to rerip CDs but MC31 did a few and just stoppedresponding to anything. It's reading CD data wrong now,example..... loaded Allman Brothers Where It All Begins and it comes up in MC as James Taylor  JT. Weird. If I go back tto MC30 do you think it will help? Again, never had these problems before I upgraded to MC31. Had over 6000 music files and everything worked.

Files are never in a backup.  The backup is just MC's database, etc.  No files.

It's likely your files are there and you just haven't found them.  Use a file browser to search.

Read Mark's comment just above.  You may have a similar issue with the CD drive.

As Jim said, all your media files are never in a backup (just MC's settings and library), it's the user's responsibility to store and backup their files to prevent file losses like this. You should always store your files you want to keep on a separate drive (than the drive Windows or the OS is installed in), an external hard drive, a NAS, etc. instead of storing them on the same drive Windows is installed on. Why? Because once something goes wrong (e.g. you need to reformat and reinstall Windows, the PC dies, etc.) you lose all of your files and you have to start over again. This way by storing your media elsewhere it helps protect against that... that said, it's not infallible either and I'd recommend employing a variation of the 3-2-1 backup strategy... of course this isn't infallible either, but I digress. It's better than straight up losing everything and having to start over again though.
