Analyzing Devices
« on: November 07, 2023, 10:38:23 am »

Is there a reason Media Center often pops up a window seemingly at random stating "Analyzing Devices" ?

It sits there permanently and I have to kill the process, which does not always work, requiring a reboot

I am often ripping discs when this occurs and that process freezes up when Media Center does this.

Are you sure the message is from MC?

Maybe something else has control of the device.

Antivirus software can interfere with reading data from any drive.

Absolutely from MC.  It's a sub-window of the app.  And killing the app from command line or Task Manager takes a very long time - if it ever terminates.

I've not touched anti-virus for years (at all, except whatever Windows provides OOTB).  I noticed it recently with the most recent few releases but didn't think much about it. I use MakeMKV (standalone, not from MC, and latest version) for my ripping needs and am wondering if there is some interaction there as it seems to occur when I am ripping from disc.  I've not tracked it every time to draw that conclusion, but will start doing so.

Take a look at the thread here on Windows Defender.

A screen shot would help.

I've seen it quite a few times over the years, and even reported it to Matt, for me it seems to happen if the mouse is sitting on, traverses, or is clicked on, the word "Edit" on the MC Menu Bar fairly soon after something has been manually imported into MC. Plus it can happen when MC is told not to analyse files on import.

For me it is fairly easy to reproduce as it usually happens soon after using Explorer to add or update Skins and TrackInfo Plugins where the only "playable media" is image files along with things like css, html, javascript and xml files.

It actually hasn't happened again since I made one change: ripping discs (UHD, BluRay) directly in MC using MakeMKV vs. using MakeMKV standalone at the same time MC is running.  Will see if this is consistent and then also try MakeMKV standalone again and see if it occurs again in MC.
