Playlist: Life Below 92
« on: November 13, 2023, 03:12:50 pm »

(I'm not sure where this comment should go, so feel free to move it around)

I just uploaded a playlist with the name "Life Below 92,"   and I thought the title and the playlist might be helped by a bit of an explanation.

Back in the early 1990's I was a member of a rock-music-oriented online message board.  One of the things that was done was members could make a mix cassette tape and let another member hear it.

Life Below 92 is the name of a cassette tape I made.  I made it in August 1992.  The title means that the songs on the tape all were first heard by me on college radio, i.e., radio stations below 92 on the FM dial.  Back then (and still now) I was an avid listener of college radio stations where you can hear music that doesn't make it to the commercial stations.

Some of the songs on the playlist also appear on other playlists I've uploaded, some do not.

In any case, I just wanted to give some background behind the playlist.

Enjoy!

I'm not sure if this level of detail is warranted, but I found the notes I supplied with the mix tape back in 1992....

                         Life Below 92
                         =============

"Killer Klowns" - The Dickies  1988
    CD: _Killer Klowns_   (Enigma 73322)

Interesting tune.  Fun lyrics.  I like the way the beginning sounds
like your cassette deck is eating the tape.

"Eardrum Buzz" (12" version) - Wire  1989
CD: _It's Beginning To And Back Again_  (Enigma 73516)

"Imagination" - Xymox  1989
CD: _Twist of Shadows_  (Wing 839 233)

"We Ride Tonight" - Sherbs  1981
LP: _Defying Gravity_  (ATCO SD 38-146)

"The Road To Hell, (parts I & II)" - Chris Rea  1988
CD: _The Road To Hell_  (Geffen 24276)

"Every Dog Has Its Day" - Let's Active  1988
CD: _Every Dog Has Its Day_  (I.R.S.  IRSD-42151)

    Local band from Waterbury, Connecticut.

"Don't Turn Away" - Chemistry Set  1991
CD single: _Don't Turn Away_  (Imaginary  MIRACD 026)

Energetic tune.  Local station played it for a couple weeks,
never to be heard from again. An English band.

"5:30 Blue" - Her Tears  1992
7" single: _5:30 Blue_  (Liquid Lollipop)

Local band from Danbury, Connecticut.  Very popular at the moment.
Lead out tag: "Can I touch 'em?"

"Think Again" - Cheater Jones   circa 1987
CD: _New Jersey Rock 5_   (WDHA   DHA-5)

NJR5 is a sampler of NJ local bands, the fifth in the series, and the
first on compact disc.  Cheater Jones is a tight, funky band.  WDHA
is a rather adventurous rock station in Dover, NJ (105.5).  They
    spotlight local talent a lot.

"Playing in the Dirt" - Joanna Connor   circa 1989
CD: _Believe It!_    (Blind Pig Records  BP 73289)

Blues guitarist extraordinaire hailing from Chicago, she puts on an
excellent show.  The first time I saw her, she was walking around the
cafe before the show, talking with her fans.  I didn't know it was her.
Even as she was setting up her equipment, I didn't match up the music
with the person.  Then she started to warm up a bit. ...

Here's a cover of a Robert Cray tune.

"Weekend" - Helen Schneider w/The Kick   1983
LP: _Smuggled Out A-Live_    (Mirage  90083)

'I hope I spent it with a friend...'

"World's Away" - Strange Advance   1987
CD: _Strange Advance_    (Capitol  CDP 46887)

"Catch The Breeze" - Slowdive   1992
CD: _just for a day_    (Creation Records  CDP 98074)

    Space rock for the 90's.

"This is the Day" - The The   1983
    CD: _Soul Mining_     (Epic  466337)

Matt Johnson's medium for the early 80's

"Human Jungle" - The Jazz Butcher  1986
CD: _A Scandal in Bohemia / Sex and Travel_  (Glass Records  GLACD-009)

"City Drops into Night" - The Jim Carroll Band   1983
LP: _Catholic Boy_    (Atco  SD 38-132)

Good sax solos by Bobby Keys.

"Little Ball o'Yarn" - Country Dick Montana
    12" EP:

This tune is from a promotional 12" EP on MCA records.  The local radio
station had a lot of fun with it for a month or so.

The Sherbs ! AKA Sherbet, Australian 70's rock royalty. Good to see them get some airplay in the US.

The Sherbs got airplay on the local college station with two songs, "We Ride Tonight" and "I'm Alive."

I've oft wondered why they were not more widely known here in the US.

They were huge in Australia, one of if not the biggest band of the 70's here. Like a lot of Aus acts they couldn't quite crack the US market, but did have a top 5 hit in the UK with "Howzat". They did make the odd appearance in the Billboard top 200, but I think "We Ride Tonight" was as high as they got.

They changed their name to "The Sherbs" from "Sherbet" which is what they were known as here.

The lead singer Daryl Braithwaite had quite a successful solo career and is still very popular with the classic rock set and plays shows all the time.

At times I wish I knew the reason for that.

All I have for The Sherbs are the "Defying Gravity" and "The Skill" albums, the latter I've digitized but have not yet broken out the songs.  (aside: when I digitize a vinyl album, I usually just do it as "side 1" and "side 2" because that is how I used to listen to the albums, i.e., whole sides at a time.  So many of the albums that I've digitized are still in that format.)

I'll poke around and see if I can come up with some other Australian bands and put together a playlist. It may be a while before I cna get to it, though.  :)

The Aussies broke through eventually in the 80's with ACDC, INXS, Savage Garden, Rick Springfield, Midnight Oil. I guess we could also claim ONJ and maybe even the Bee Gees.

But the big 70's bands like Sherbert (The Sherbs) Skyhooks, The Sports, The Saints even Cold Chisel could never break though.

OK... ACDC, not my style.

INXS, Savage Garden Midnight Oil yeah, their albums occupy space in my house.

But, kudo for Savage Garden.  "I Want You" is a fave for me. (odd video, though)

I actually think one of  the most successful act from Aus in the US is Air Supply.

Honourable mentions to Kylie M, Peter Allen and Helen Reddy.

I just uploaded a playlist containing a small sampling of Australian rock bands.

Apologies for the delay.  Seasonal festivities happened, plus I wanted to digitize a couple of vinyl albums for songs on the playlist.

Enjoy!

Who would have known.

Digging through the accumulation of LPs I have, I stumbled upon the Eurogliders, a Perth band.

Their great tune "Heaven" is on my latest 80's playlist (uploading as I type this.).

I would have hoped that I ventured into that storage area when I did the Australian Bands playlist, but I didn't.

So now the tune leads off an 80's playlist.

Enjoy!
