Particles not working
« on: December 13, 2023, 03:06:25 pm »

Hi,

I just tried breaking a live concert into tracks using Particles: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Particles

But when I try playing the individual tracks MC says it can't find the file.  The filepath has been updated (ie each particle shows up as a track in MC and the filepath for that track is listed), and the start and stop times are still there along with the song titles, but no files have been created so the software can't find them.

Is there some "finish" button I need to find to finish the process?  The instructions don't say anything about needing to create the files.

Is the filepath correct?

It looks correct. I'm cutting up a .wav file and it thinks the particle files are in the same folder as the file I'm cutting up

i.e. the original file is

C:\Users\Me\Music\ArtistName\original.wav

and the particles have file paths

C:\Users\Me\Music\ArtistName\Song1.wav
C:\Users\Me\Music\ArtistName\Song2.wav

etc.

But there's only one .wav file in the folder: the original.  It either didn't create these additional files, or it put them somewhere other than the place it is reporting.

A particle is a segment of a file, not a separate file.  If you play it from MC, you should hear the segment.

When I try to play it I get an error that MC can't find the file.

Do I need to change the file path to point at the original?

And if I do, why does the software make up a new, non-existent file instead of just pointing to the original?

How are you trying to play?

How are you trying to play?

Audio ->files -> find the particles just created -> double click or right click -> play

Just like every file.

From Scooby's post above, it looks like I'm running into a known bug that's been out there for a decade.

Try Audio > Artist or Album

Ok, I'll give that a try when I'm back at my PC later in the week.

It's a live recording from 1991, so it's not exactly urgent to get it to work...

No, the same behavior.  It can't find the file.

I suppose I just have to try creating one, cross my fingers, and hope it works?

I just created a new particle exactly like one I created earlier and it seems to work.  But about ten minutes after creating it, all the others disappeared.  I didn't delete them,  just some unexpected behavior from MC.

Another data point is that the particle that worked has a file path that pointed to the original .wav file.  The "bad" ones had a file path that pointed to a new .wav file in the same folder as the original. For instance, if I named the particle "Track1" the file path would be .../Music/Album Name/Track1.wav.  Of course, that file did not exist.

When you're looking for the bug, that's most likely the place to look.

Particles just break. It has been this like from the start. It would be nice if they would be fixed but it seems to have zero priority during the years.

Why not just continue the discussion here?  I don't see a reason to start another thread.

No offense meant but I'm not committed to spend more time on particles without some guarantees for dev time.  Maybe jmone or others who have reported bugs during the years will chime in.  :) There are plenty of threads in some older boards. What I remember is that e.g. adding track numbers to songs "particled" from radio show did break the link to host file (filename field did change to something that don't exist).

If  the file path was editable for particles we could probably fix it ourselves if it created the wrong one.
