"The file could not be found" error message
« on: December 21, 2023, 11:54:48 am »

I have had a Win 10 Home PC and a Win 11 Home PC for some time and have used MC extensively. My main media source is my WD NAS. I just got a new Win 11 Pro computer and installed Media Center 31.0.87, the same version as on my other machines. I used "Restore Library" to install the latest backup from my existing library. All went well, except none of my media is available! I get the "The file could not be found" message for all files. The Filenames shown in File List are correct and the same as on my other systems, which work fine. I use the IP format (\\192.168.n\nn\etc.) for all files and have Auto Import set for those locations. It does find files using the device name rather then the IP (\\MyCloudPR2100\etc). The new setup also finds and plays the files using Drives and Devices/Explorer/DeviceName, as do my other setups. I can Ping the NAS using either the IP or device name. I am using the trial version of McAfee that came with the new HP computer. I have tried disabling it and making sure MC can pass through.

I cannot see any differences between my two long-time working setups and the new non-working one. Maybe it's a DNS/DHCP issue? I imagine it is a simple problem/fix but I am just going in circles now. Can someone please give me some advice?

It's probably not the AV, but to be sure, you must uninstall it.

We recommend only running Windows Defender.

You could just do find and replace to change the location.

When you do a "ping MyCloudPR2100" or "nslookup MyCloudPR2100", does the IP address match what you expect?
Is the IP of the new PC on the same subnet range as everything else?
Are you using DHCP or static addresses?

What's the exact error message/code you get if you open "\\192.168.x.x" in Explorer?

I uninstalled McAfee and "tamed" Defender and it solved the problem.
