Sorting Old MP3 Albums
« on: January 08, 2003, 11:12:13 am »

Hi everyone, first let me say how great it is to see such an active community. I downloaded this software, looking for a WinAmp 3.x replacement, and I'm really liking this program. I've had several problems configuring it the way I like, but the Search feature on the boards has resulted in an answer for most of them. One question tho I can't seem to figure out:

Q: I have lots of older mp3 albums where the Track # information in the tag is not set. All of my mp3s are organized in Windows by Artist -> Album -> Tracks, all numbered "01 - Song #1" through "XX - Song #X". Technically, I should be able to sort the tracks by filename and they'll be in the correct album order, but the program seems to strip off the 01 -  and just leave the name of the song as the file name. How can I sort everything correctly w/o going back and modifing the tags for every mp3?

Thanks for your help everyone!

Welcome to Interact.

Check how you've got sorting set in MJ.  Also take a look at the Tools options under Properties for the file.  You can get there by right clicking on a file.

There you can rename the file from the properties or vice versa.  There are some other options there that might help, too.

Do a few before you do a lot.  There is an undo available.

Thanks for the fast reply! I hadn't seen those options before, and the Fill Properties From Filename works once i set the format to TRACK#-NAME. However, using this method, I still have to go back and do this to hundreds of albums. Is there a way to keep the program from stripping the track # from the name so when I sort by name, it looks at the literal filename? (01 - My Song 1....having it start alphabetizing with 0 instead of M)

hope this makes sense

You can select multiple tracks and then right click to get to properties.

You can set the properties to be the same as the file-name.

I suggest experimenting a little.

Right, I can fix an entire album worth of mp3s all at once, which is very useful. I could spend hours going thru every album and seeing which ones have the track # tag filled out, and then change the ones that don't have that particular field filled out. But the fact is, my music is all ready organized! I don't need the tags filled out at all. All I need is a player that sorts by FILENAME, not by the track # tag info. It'd be easier to continue using Winamp 2.7 than reorganize my entire collection.

Again, thank you for your active help in this, I'm really impressed with the customer service!

Did you explore the sort options?

In MC9 go to Tools/Options/Tree & View Settings.  Under the Sorting section, click on Add and choose Filename.  Not sure if it's exactly the same in MJ8, but probably similar.

Jim, yes, I played around with the sorting options. I have it set to sort by name (ascending), but it sorts by the first letter in the songs title, ignoring the track # at the beginning for some reason. None of the other sorting options specify the filename specifically, it's only the Tag information that it sorts by.

I guess that's the problem....it's looking at the tag's name field, not the filename itself. I've been looking over the boards a bit and it sounds like MJ9 is pretty stable. I'll try downloading that today and see what different sorting options it has. Thanks again for you help!

Rob, thanks for the post, I'll give your suggestion a shot with MJ9!

I don't use MJ8 anylonger, and don't Have MC9 in front of me right now, But

can't you just click on the header of the "FileName" field, it will sort.

I switched to MC9 and it has a "Filename" sort option, in addition to the "name" field in the mp3 tag. Works like a charm!
