Media Center 9.0.107 beta
« on: February 05, 2003, 09:20:43 am »

Media Center 9.0.107 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work. If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90107.exe

Changes

1. Fixed: Appearance window in InstallWizard did not have option to disable skins.
2. Changed: InstallWizard will stop on Appearance page during Express install.
3. Fixed: Added Auto Install option to InstallWizard.
4. Fixed: Zone setting from mjextman.exe wasn't working.
5. Fixed: UNC destination folder wasn't working for ripping CD's.
6. Fixed: CD burners weren't being recognized.
7. Fixed: CD drives were showing up twice in the tree view.
8. Changed: Retooled Steinberg's ASIO SDK to allow multiple ASIO instances at once. (allows multiple ASIO cards running at once and also allows configuration while playing)
9. Changed: Added more informative "Channel Offset" note in the ASIO configuration.
10. NEW: Added "Channels" selection to Direct Sound options. (can now use popular Creative Labs and Turtle Beach cards to drive multiple zones at once from the same card)
11. Fixed: Media Center would fail to start if it had an empty library.
12. Fixed: Media Center will automatically ask if you want to use your old MJ 8 library if you uninstall MJ 8 (but keep data), install MC 9, then run.
13. Fixed: Silence suppression option wasn't working for CD burning.
14. Fixed: Rare database saving bug that could cause MC to restart with an empty library.
15. Fixed: Library backups would have a strange name when backing up the default library.
16. Fixed: Video thumbnailing would freeze MC when trying to access a file that was in use.
17. Fixed: Video sizing was not working.
18. Fixed: Video thumbnailing was not working.
19. Fixed: "Name" will now use filename for video files if no name is specified in the file's tags.
20. Changed: Video parser will report bitrate for most videos now.
21. Fixed: List sorting was not working.
22. Changed: "Jump on Play (if has display)" won't jump to full screen when double-clicking an audio file. (even if images in the same list start playing)
23. Changed: Double-click "Show" shows all possible images in the view, starting with the selected one. (instead of just one image)
24. Fixed: Search control could get confused in certain cases and think the left mouse button was down when it wasn't.

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help and support.

Bugs:
1. The CD Burning Progress dialog seems to be modal now...can't click on MC main window...also, when I click on the progress dialog's titlebar to drag it somewhere else all I get is a 'beep' (ie, can't do it).

Update:
It appears there is a deadlock condition where if you click on the Options toolbar icon at the right point, MC thinks the Options dialog is displayed modal (it is not) when the CD Burning Progress dialog is displayed...thus, both MC's main screen and the CD Burning Progress can not be accessed (beep) because of the 'hidden' Options dialog....cuz, Options popped up after the CD burn finished.

- Left tree collapses on startup

- Uploading a file to my Archos Handheld device crashes MJ

- When sending e.g. 5 mp3's to external tool MP3Gain, it opens 5 times MP3Gain i.s.o. Adding those 5 files to 1 MP3Gain and those 5 MP3Gain instances have all the same file in it.

- When deleting a file with shift from Playing now when a song is playing, the focus of the currently playing song is gone

Output now seems distorted, with or without DSP settings on.......output was immaculatei n version .105, clean, crisp, and accurate. Since .106 It sounds almost as if the output is too high. It still sounds the same no matter what i set my sound cards eq at, or my subwoofer power level.....no adjusting helps...just lowers the decibel level.

(Interim report, based on behavior on office computer.)

In the last several builds, MC office is extremely sluggish when I use it to load the home library through Media Server. It takes 5-10 seconds to sort fields, and frequently it freezes completely for 30-60 seconds, or more. Unable to perform any other functions while this is going on. Also, in the midst of lengthy playlists (4-5 hrs.), MJ will begin to report that the paths for files are inaccurate and the program freezes. This persists in 107.

This is not the case when I play the local library. Sorts quickly, no freezing. Can't report on lengthy local playlists, because I maintain a very small library on my local office drive.

107 is showing some new behavior. When I open it, I receive a message: "This action will ihstall a Media Center component. Do you wish to continue? [Yes][No]" Never seen that one before. Clicking either yes or no gets you nowhere, however, as the message continuously reappears, blocking access to MC and other open programs. Can't send a jpeg because access to my website is down ATM.

Free memory is quite low. Only programs open right now: MC, IE 6 and MS Word.

We added this confirmation for plug-in installs. Someone pointed out a possible problem that this helps fix. It shouldn't happen on startup though.

Maybe have to do that I unnistalled everything in the previous build and I bought the new M-audio Revolution 7.1, but this player sounds better everyday. I dont do a lot of things, because it lacks mpc support but no problems so far. Hi, hi, hi. ;D

MC can access my fire wire drives at least 50 times faster than before (not an exaggeration). This went whacky somewhere around .96 **Thank you very much for that little fix**.

RAM situation is the same, MC still has quite the appetite.

got the confirmation bug when I connected to library through media server. Dialog box kept popping up over and over. It seemed like every time I moved my mouse. I moved the mouse out of media center window, then back in, clicked on playlist, it didn't come back. It could have been just a coinsidence about the mouse. Also I just noticed every time I connect through media server I get confirmation dialog box.

MC no longer seems to be storing cover art inside files even though the checkbox is ticked...trying an update tags from library which as you might guess is taking bloody ages :)

Anyone know any good tunes to sing while I wait :)

comfirmed with the mouse movement and the repeating dialog box. This is on win xp by the way. Two other machines one xp the other win98 work fine. The repeating dialog box occured this time after I clicked on playlist then move my mouse into the playlist window. The "This action will install a Media Center Component" dialog box kept poping up until I moved my mouse outside the media center window and just hit enter. Then media center locked up. I closed media center and my audio card driver locked up.

Hairstyle still seems to be broken. :-/

(The "Media Center could not find any full screen skins. Please reinstall the latest version of Media Jukebox." error)

Thanks for the fixed sorting and burning.

Hairstyle is working here. I think it may be looking in the wrong directory if uninstalled version 105 and then installed 106. Take a look at my comments in the 106 thread.

I'm assuming you have 107 installed.

The Add Image dialog box has no scroll bars...

Dragging for scrollbars is still not accurate...you need to drag outside of dialog boxes to get them to drag to the end (about 2cm outside)

I am running 107, yes...and I did no uninstalling of previous versions. Just installed on top as I always have. I'm assuming it uses the "Hairstyle"-titled skin by default? That's in my Fullskins dir as it always has been. Strange.

I have just installed MC 9.0.107 over ver 9.0.106 as I have done on most every beta release for the past several months. I am very pleased with Media Center and appreciate all the discussion and work that has gone into improving the product.

Back around Thanksgiving last year, I was having a problem registering but Jim H. and John T. exchanged many emails and posted replies to my problem until I was able to get my copy registered. My concern is that I now again am an unregistered user with a thirty day trial version. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I need to do now. Thank you, Joe Karnes

Joe,
Use a restore if necessary. www.mediajukebox.com/license has the details.

Restores will be reset on release.

When I try to burn a data cd on a CDRW, I get the following error:
"Can't start the write."
While the burning status reads:
"Failed: Open session. Invalid field in parameter list."

Is this something stupid I'm doing wrong? Here's the system info:

 • Fixed: If "External Encoder" is selected for either a rip or convert, the advanced info dialog always pops up unasked for when the encoder dialog opens.
 • Fixed: Crossfade settings are ignored during an audio burn.

 • Data CD writes on my Sony drive fail with "Can't start the write.", "Failed: Open session. Invalid field in parameter list". Data CD writes to the TDK drive work fine.
 • "Decode files directly to CD" is both on the main CD writer settings page and the settings sub-page but the checkboxes aren't synchronized.
 • Now that you can get past the "Invalid Media Server Information" message box when searching for media servers, I still get multiple duplicate replies from the server if either the server or client have multiple network interfaces.
 • When the media server responds to a search, it responds with the first interface it's bound to even if that interface isn't reachable by the client that issued the search request. My server has 2 interfaces, one private, one public. My laptop is on the public network. I issue a search from the laptop and the server responds with the name and ip address of the private interface which the laptop can never reach. Combined with the previous problem, I can get 4 responses for the private interface, all useless.
 • If the client actually gets only 1 response, it tries to connect immediately. It should problably give you an option to see the response and confirm that you want to connect to it.
 • If you cancel out of the list box with the responses you get a "failed to connect" message and you get dumped into the default library instead of the library you were originally connected to.
 • Column widths aren't saving again. You have to drag the column separator twice to get the first change to stick.
 • When "Decode directly to CD" is unchecked, and you burn more than 1 CD, the raw temp file is deleted and recreated for each CD instead of using the one created at the start of the first burn.
 • In "File Naming and Location" you can't enter paths with leading or trailing periods. I.E. If I try to enter a path for track images like "m:\.coverart" the period gets stripped out as soon as I move the cursor out of the entry field. Any valid file system path should be allowed.
 • Can't turn off tooltips for the drop target and player controls.
 • MP3 Encoder settings are broken again. If you select "custom" and press advanced, you get the quality selection dialog instead of the custom command line dialog.
 • Analyze audio during rip doesn't do anything.
 • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%. (maybe not a "problem", but it's still a pain)
 • Ripping in digital secure mode hangs near the end of the last audio track if there is also a data track on the cd. Have to cancel, wait for everything to release, then rip the last track in digital large buffer mode.

-- Analyze Audio still creates a Peak Level of 100% on all files.

Confirm, not saving art in file, and explains why I thought I had an increase in speed accessing fire wire drives.

Still having issues downloading plug-ins through my MS ISA Server proxy. I get challenged for my login, but then it just hangs for about 5 minutes before failing.

CD drive showing up as two drives is fixed.

1. I still cannot burn a data CD. I can send a mp3 playlist to my CD burner, everything is queued, and the folders show up in the drive; it works in test mode, but when I burn, it looks like all the files are being copied, but at the end I get a message in the status screen to the effect of "illegal track mode for this media."

2. Customize toolbar is still a mess

3. Tekno skin is still cut off at the very top

Looking better each time!

Fixed

1. When watching TV and clicking on the "Channels <<" button: it removes the list of channels and increases the size of the display properly. However, it does not remove the channel scroll bar. The scroll bar sits in the middle of the picture.

2. Unable to load new libraries: I can create a new library. But when I try to load it, I receive the message, “Media Center failed to load the specified library. It will revert to the default library.”

Bugs (previously reported, still exist)

1. Import Media (Mp3 files):

a. When reading artist, if TPE2 contains data, artist is filled with data from TPE2. If TPE2 is blank, then artist is filled with data from TPE1. You should be consistent. Artist should always correspond to data from TPE1.

b. Reading track numbers with leading zeros ("01") truncates the zeros. If I later use MC to change file properties, the leading zero is lost. Should keep the leading zeros.

2. Display image: If I enter a path to my own image for use instead of the J River logo, the J River logo still appears on Track Info screens. The logo should be replaced with my image.

3. Media library icon on the toolbar contains the play arrow. Remove it.

Bugs (previously reported, unable to test)
My main music hard drive crashed, so I can't test this one right now:

1. Import MP3 Media: The title usually reads correctly. However, songs with title tags like, "Concerto for Orchestra: I. Introduzione: Andante non troppo; Al" fill the name field with the filename rather than the title from the tag. Not sure what the pattern is. Perhaps you have a limit on the number of characters in the title field that is too small.

Response to posts by others

1. I have no problem displaying album art which is "inside file."

Requests

1. Other MP3 tags: Higher priority: Add database fields for TPE2 (Band/Orchestra), TPE3 (conductor/performer refinement), and TIT1 (Content Group Description). Lower priority: also add TKEY, TPE4, TIT3, TPUB

2. Add ability to export to .txt or .csv file. (I know I can highlight a list and copy and paste, but an export function seems like a logical thing to have in addition to XML).

I'm back in the build race again! The new zone select mode was enough for me to fire up the old downloader. And thanks a lot for the new channel select mode as well, now I can get five extra zones from my excisting sound cards! It looks like it even works on C-Media cards, but I will test this more this afternoon. Being my own boss means that my boss is very strict... ;D

But one weird bug that appeared on 106 and still is there on 107: When I install without first uninstalling the previous build (from 089 to 106 and from 106 to 107) MC is totally unresponsive. It starts up and the buttons "light up" when I move my mouse over them, but nothing happens when I click. I can't even close it the regular way, I have to go via the XP task manager. This is not related to skins, I had the same problem when I installed with skins disabled. But when I first uninstall the former version with "delete all registry keys" or whatever that is called, it works when installing the next version. But I don't think all those reg keys are deleted since I have the same views, zones, skin, plugins and so on when I install the new version.

And another weird thing: I removed the plug-in "Sleep timer" when I moved up from MJB to MC, but still every time something crashes, I get something about plug-in Sleep Timer can not be found or initialized. Is this an old reg key, so I perhaps should uninstall again and delete all reg keys? 8)

After install (overwrite), I expanded the tree,

- clicked on a playlist that has about 58 songs
- Did not select any songs
- Choose email files from File Menu
- Lots of chugging and such for 15 minutes or so
- Finally, hit the X button, XP ask to "end now"
- Replied affirmative
- Then Outlook 2002 (which was running) was no longer able to display any of my msgs, claiming another program had damaged my personal folders file
- Stopped and started Outlook, and it recovered fine.

It would be nice to be able to cancel the "email files" command and to see some kind of progress indicator as it builds the temp files?

BTW, new ASIO stuff seems okay so far, very good.

I downloaded MC 9.0.107 last night and then restored my license. The sound quality seemed to be much improved without the pops and other assorted nosies of past versions.

This morning I was viewing a DVD for a short period of time and then when I tried to stop and go back to an audio playlist, MC froze and I had to use Task Manager to close it. Now each time I try to open MC I get a message "Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I can not display my system info now but I have posted it several times in the past. Do I need to download Ver 9.0.107 again or are there any other suggestions to fix this problem. Thank you, Joe Karnes

I'd love to help test the multi-channel options of DirectSound. What kind of output should I be expecting on a SB Live? I tried creating 2 and 3 zones, and tried various combinations of output channels, but kept getting overlapping sound on at least one output.

Also, what sound cards support the ASIO output method? (Yes I'm somewhat of a newbie, but this app is becoming important to the new house I'm building...)

Thanks,
Patrick

Uninstalled/reinstalled 107 to address the component installation message bug. That's gone now, but when 107 reopened, the entry for the server IP address had disappeared from the library manager drop-down and I have been unable to reconnect even after re-entering it. MC reports 'unable to connect to server' almost immediately after giving the 'Load' command.

Double checked the external IP address, and have entered it on the client using the protocol "m01p://[address:port]. Nothing different on the office entwork or local drive.

At home, am able to access my library through the server on the host computer using this address.

Installed 107 over 106 originally, then deleted MC through Start>Settings>Add/Delete Programs and reopened the 107.exe file I saved in my download folder.

Also: MC opens to the library with files sorted in random fashion - not alphabetized either by file name, artist or album. Cannot detect an organizing scheme. When I click on the column header to re-sort by artist name, navigate to 'playing now' or any other view, then return to library, file order is scrambled again.

MC seems to be using more resources with each build - at last count, about 35-36 of memory. In 105, it was around 30-31.
