DSP Studio not working with Video content?
« on: August 03, 2024, 12:25:56 pm »

Hey gang, I made an account here just to ask this question, as I could not find it no matter how much I searched:

Audio content works wonderfully with VST3s in the DSP Studio for me (Great job on implementation here!), but it refuses to process the audio from any video file, whether from the internal browser or a local file.

I've read video DSP is disabled by default, but I can not see an option to enable it anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/advice!

what does "refuses to process" specifically mean?

you don't describe how you're routing audio through MC either, the usual way to do this is to enable the https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WDM_Driver which will then pick up system audio and route it through the audio engine

Hey, Matt!

To clarify, I'm not trying to use the WDM driver for any 'systemwide' type DSP, I'm just trying to apply the DSP Studio to videos played through the built-in browser and video player.

By 'refuse to process', I mean that the audio (flac, mp3, etc) I play through MC works with VSTs just fine, while all video content played from within the application does not pass audio through the DSP studio (all meters remain empty).

So the audio channels from (in-app) video playback are not making it to the DSP somehow.

You get sound coming through just not going via your vst or you get silence? What does audio path show?

I get audio, but it's as if the VST inserts are not there.
(No signal on any metering from any insert in the chain, even native JriverMC ones, same signal-chain works flawlessly with all audio files)

So they are apparently being bypassed by the video's audio track somehow; it's as if the video audio never reaches the front of DSP Studio.

I saw an old post circa 2010 that it was routed this way by default and you had to change it in General > Features > Advanced (to enable video DSP), but that option seems to be long deprecated (?)

I'm just trying to apply the DSP Studio to videos played through the built-in browser and video player.

You have to use the WDM driver to pipe audio from the built-in web browser through MC, otherwise it goes through the system mixer like any other web browser.

You sure about that?

This post from 2010 states that video DSP was implemented natively:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=56123.0

No mentions of WDM/virtual input/output routing requirements are made, but then again the option to enable the feature is not located in the referenced place, either.

So this feature's been changed apparently, but it seems to be an undocumented change (?)
Would be nice to have some more officially documented clarity on how it functions now.

To be clear when JRiver plays a local video file (i.e. a file on your computer) DSP should work normally just like with an audio file.  I use that functionality every day.  However, video played in the embedded browser does not (and has never to my knowledge) passed through the JRiver DSP chain without using the WDM driver as a loopback solution.

So if you're seeing no DSP on browser based video (even the browser embedded in JRiver), I would expect no DSP without using the WDM driver.  But if you're seeing no DSP even when playing local video files then something is odd, as that should work the same way as audio.

If you are seeing the second case, say more about what happens when you play a video file.  You should see the audio information in audio path, etc., and that might tell you where things are breaking down.

For the embedded web browser (Edge via WebView2, Chromium via CEF, etc.) yes. It's an external component even though it's integrated into MC it's still external hence the only way to pipe any audio played in one of the embedded web browsers is the WDM driver on Windows.

Playback of actual/local video files should go through the DSP engine, yes. As long as it's not within the web browser, of course.

Hey guys, thanks for the recommendation to check the 'audio path' (cogwheel beside the playback position bar for anyone looking).
That provided the insight I needed to diagnose:
Turns out the video in question is using eac-3 (Dolby surround); it is an Atmos mix with 6 channels.

I updated my app version and it now passes the EAC-3 audio through the DSP studio, but suddenly the stereo mix is gone and I'm just hearing the sides! (Background is there but no dialog track)

So still fiddling with it a bit. Close to having it working though, it did this before I updated the program and I got it to work with a combo of audio device+output settings but forgot what I did.

Much appreciated!

EDIT:
So I was essentially trying to playback a 5.1 Atmos mix in MC, but was only hearing the side channels with no dialog. Thus to get audio I had to choose JRSS in the DSP output options.

This downmixes into stereo properly and I can hear it -- but the JRSS downmix is not being passed through the next two plugins in the chain (Slate VSX + ADPTR Metric A/B).

To clarify all native stereo is processed as expected.

Any more ideas on this front?

you should show your audio path as it's not really clear exactly what you're doing

it sounds like some sort of channel mapping problem though

Dolby Atmos should have Bitstreaming: set to Yes (HDMI) with all the DSP Options Turned Off to stop MC trying to do anything with the Atmos Stream.
