No Video on some files, others OK
« on: August 20, 2024, 02:43:36 pm »

I have a problem playing some video files after upgrade to 33.0.13, all play fine on 32.0.58 (and many versions for several years before that). The audio is fine but there is no video, just a black screen. On some videos the video flashes up briefly when I hit Play and again on Stop, but only for a fraction of a second. It is the same on two different W11 PCs. I haven't tried all video files by any means but the ones that don't work so far are all m2ts with vc-1 video coding. However, other files with the same format work just fine. I can't see any pattern with bitrate, file size, etc. I don't see any video settings that should effect this but settings on MC33 are the same as on MC32 anyway. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Media Center but no help. Would appreciate any help.

Looks like this problem is unique to me, but anyone have any general ideas that I might try?

Some things to try:
Do the videos play with Red October Standard? (I'm assuming you are currently using Red October JRVR).
This is to see whether it is a renderer or decoder issue.
Make sure your Anti-virus/firewall is not blocking MC33 from loading required files to the plugins folder, compare the contents of %APPDATA%\J River\Media Center 32\Plugins with %APPDATA%\J River\Media Center 33\Plugins
Try restoring a backup from MC32.0.58 to MC33 with just 'Restore settings' checked, this will ensure that ALL settings are definitely the same between the two versions.

Give a bit more info regarding your setups...Laptops? HTPC via HDMI to TV/Projector? GPU type: Nvidia, AMD, Intel?

Thanks Terry. Yes, the videos work fine using Red October Standard (I was using JRVR). The AppData plugins are the same for MC 32 and MC 33. Both computers are desktop All In Ones, and HP with AMD graphics and an Acer with Nvida.

Can you post a log file of trying to play such a video with JRVR?

I just emailed you a log of Live TV.  No video, but audio is playing.

Do you have hardware decoding on? Any change if you toggle it?
In settings -> Video -> Hardware accelerated video decoding when possible

Another thought, in Settings -> Video -> JRVR Settings -> Processing, can you swap "Deinterlacing Mode" to YADIF? Just for testing to rule some things out.

Changing to YADIF worked for me.

Thanks, changing to YADIF also worked for me. Video looks same as with the D3D11 setting on other videos that work both ways so I will leave it on YADIF and see if I have problems with any other videos over time.

Just a heads up that though changing to YADIF seems to work for most videos I've just found one DVD rip that plays fine in MC32 but not MC33 even with the YADIF setting. There's clearly something amiss here.
