JRiver33 stops playing after 5 sec
« on: August 25, 2024, 05:49:55 am »

I have purchased Jriver33 recently as an upgrade to JRiver 28 - long term user since JRiver 15 or so ...

Then I installed the setup file I stored on the local computer with Internet cable disconnected and Windows defender switched off.

After install of MC33, I reconnected Internet and switched on Windows Defender.

All folders of windows defender, having anything to do with JRiver and/or involved files to playback are included in

Windows Defender excludes.. (remember: taming windows defender).

There is no other antivirus installed...

Then I tried to play one of my favorite internet radio stations "NDR Kultur", after I have double-checked the current URL is valid and setup correctly in JRiver.

When I push the play knob it plays the station music for 3 sec then stops (crashes ?!) - I have no idea, what to do...
The log says:

...
0009541: 11184: General: CEdgeWebView::Destroy: Start
0009541: 11184: General: JRWebApp::Destroy: Start
0009541: 11184: General: JRWebApp::Destroy: Finish (0 ms)

0009565: 1600: General: JRIpcServerThreaded::Thread: Finish (9546 ms)
....

I have no idea, what it caused, that JRiver just don't play...
What should I do ?

The zip-file, JRiver logging creates is attached for the developers to analyse...

Can someone let me know, how I can use the purchased MC33 installation ?

Many thanks...

Try switching from Edge to Chromium.

Options > Tree & View > Web Engine

Thanks for quick answer...
I changed the web engine to Chromium, however no difference:
after 5 sec it stops playing - then after another 2sec it fades in playing again, without doing anything, then after 10sec it stops again an JRiver app often crashs or stayed playing nothing...

do you want another zip log file with Chromium web engine ?

Is this only on web streaming?

Only some stations or all?

I think this is not happening with own files, which I play from internal SSD
At least I found HLS and AAC webstreaming showing this issue...

If other webstreaming like MP3 work, I don't know, as I don't use MP3 streams - too low quality

Here is another logging zip file with Chromium as web engine (attached...)

Have checked a MP3 stream:

Now after 2sec the stream stopps to restart as fading in repeat, but it doesn't stop again to crash, but keeps playing. So apart of the strange behavior when starting to play, MP3 seems to work.
Kept using Chromium with this test...

Attached log file trying MP3

Note: I stopped the play manually via the JRiver GUI after some time... it's not happening because of a problem...

I listened now for more than 1h to a MP3-Webstreaming - this seems to work.

However HLS and AAC streams do NOT work.

However, I have not yet found any other AAC site, that works...
MC Tree > Streaming > Radio Swiss Jazz

(set on their website: Reception > Internet tab > Live Stream Links > aacPlus Stream > Listen now!)

Then hit their "Start the Radio" button.  This worked without issue for me for well over an hour yesterday, and is also working right now.  MC's Tools Audio Path popup window (to right of the Progress Bar) confirms 48 kHz 2ch from source format AAC; ~90-110 kbps.

Radio Swiss Jazz doesn't play either... as mentioned before !
My fault ? I don't think so....
My old JRiver licence worked without any problems. The only thing I did, was buying a new licence purely to support the development team...

Result: NO music anymore...

I am no expert, that is why I send the zipped log file to get some advice.
It is clear, that others don't have that problem... so no surprise that you found a station who plays...

However what I need to know is what I really needs, to get JRiver working as it should.
Could it be, that licence update/upgrade itself is faulty ? I see the registration info is correctly shown...

I tried all different ways to play AAC files (jriver engine, direct show filters, ffmpeg, etc...)

HELP please !!!

Did you do this on their site?  It pops up an m3u playlist.  Click on that and chose MC33 to play it.

This works for me, too.

I have never found it necessary to install in the manner you describe in original post.

Suggestion:
Save a MC backup.
Uninstall MC33 completely.
Connect computer to the internet and turn on Windows Defender.
Re-install MC33
Allow any access permissions that Defender might ask for during the install.

Good suggestion - thank you.
I will uninstall JRiver completely and reinstall after downloading vers 33 stable again as you said...

I also think the software is not correctly installed...

I will report back...

It's not a JRiver problem.  It's a problem with the site settings.  Read above carefully.  mark gave you the steps you must take.  I confirmed that they work as he described.

That was a good suggestion !
I did everything exactly as mentioned - windows defender running, Internet running - I downloaded the latest version on top of the forum - it appears to be V33.015
Then clicked through the installation process - without any problems....

But when I want to play any of the many different stored AAC streams, none of them plays without problems. The symptoms I have described which finally finishes sometimes with JRiver crash

I will now try to play the streams with other software....

Do you have any idea, where to search, if it is a windows 10 problem for example ?

mark gave you the answer above and I confirmed it here:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,139570.msg967736.html#msg967736

It is a site settings problem, not a JRiver problem.

I am sorry to say, I have found more details of the problem and could verify what the problem is:

When I play something, I play it to the usual zone, which plays the speakers in  the living room. But at the same time, I have linked a second zone to which the system audio is played directly. This system audio content is going to the recording studio...

So I have the possibility to make recordings of everything I hear through the linked 2nd zone.

When I drop the linked second zone and disable linking, so only play audio to the speakers in my living room, there is no problem. As soon as I configure again zone linking, the problem is back as described....

Are there any secrets, which I don't know when linking zones ?
I am using this feature for years.... I cannot remember how long. But for some reason since updating to JRiver 33 it doesn't work any more...

Could you please check, if this could be a general problem. I believe there might be not so many people using Zone linking in that manner (different sort of audio to different zones - one zone with internal audio other zone with system audio, so without any changes from computer software processing like level changes...)

Many thanks for feedback on this new information.

I could not make zone linking work so far...

Here is what I did to reproduce the problem with linking zones:

At first I reset the logging, so that I get a fresh logging file.
I then played AAC stream trough only the zone, which feeds my living room speakers (named Acourate Convolver)
It played without problems....
Stopped playback
Now I linked the second zone to the living room speaker zone (second zone named Audacity)
Then I started the same AAC stream, which played without problem before again - and the problem is back as described earlier:
After a short moment JRiver stopps playing and after a few seconds it fades in again - plays a short moment and then stops completly.

The logged zip file is attached.

So how to repair Linked zone playing ?

I don't believe it's possible to share a stream with another zone.

Troubleshooting questions:

Does streaming work with your Audacity zone alone, unlinked to the Acourate Convolver zone?

Does the linked zone scheme work for local music sources (not streamed)?

What do you see in "Playing Now > Overview" when monitoring both zones on the server?

Is Windows Defender Firewall set to allow all local TCP and UDP ports for MC?

How are the zones communicating with the server - DLNA over Wi-Fi, ethernet, ... - are they individually reliable?

I don't believe it's possible to share a stream with another zone.
Correct to some extent...

Linking zones and playing local files to a networked Chromecast renderer works fine (Wi-Fi DLNA via BubbleUPnP Server; I do not have a networked direct DLNA renderer).

I can also play AAC radio streams to both the Player and the networked Chromecast renderer simultaneously and indefinitely (so far) while not linked.  The Player is clearly using MC Audio.  The networked renderer says it is not using the MC audio engine, but that may be due to my Chromecast/BubbleUPnP setup.

If I link the Player and Chromecast renderer, they can play together, but only for at most a few minutes before the Player stops.  It can be restarted with its Play button, but the setup just does not keep on playing reliably.

Note I have not tested with two remote renderers, but I'd say it is worth a try.

--> So a workaround for you might be to run your renderers unlinked, but playing the same internet AAC channel, started at approximately the same time.  That should allow recording as you desire, just without perfect simultaneity and no guarantees until proven through experience.  The server's Playing Now > Overview window is really handy for keeping track of what is going on and controlling playback.

Maybe JRiver could look into the link issue.

8/27/2024 Updated many times to sort this out!

What do you see in "Playing Now > Overview" when monitoring both zones on the server? The Link icon and underneath both play arrows go green, when playing
Is Windows Defender Firewall set to allow all local TCP and UDP ports for MC?

It even doesn't matter if windows defender firewall is on or completely switched offHow are the zones communicating with the server - DLNA over Wi-Fi, ethernet, ... - are they individually reliable?I use a single computer = the player and the server are the same machine. For jriver, I use only a single computer. Each zone is individually reliable. There must be a misunderstanding somehow:I never said I am playing something over the network to a different computer (from the server to the clients) The only network which is used is the connection to the Internet from my JRiver computer being the player. For JRiver there is no client/server network installed - just my PCThere must be a change however, as for years this kind of zone linking worked without problems. I have recorded hundreds of radio concerts, while listening live this way for years... But may be I was just lucky with the streams I used - mostly classical music from the public German Broadcasters ARD...
So I have to find another way to record Radio streams from now on...

I just assumed there were networked renderers involved using either Wi-Fi or ethernet because of the different rooms, but not necessarily separate clients.  It sounds like everything is hard wired to your single PC (?).  A little more detail about your actual hardware and wiring might help JRiver figure out what is going on.

I would say it's worth trying unlinked as described above, though it's a bit more hassle than you are accustomed to.

Need to get some sleep now...

But it is already solved using JRiver:
Thank you Mark, for the idea to play the AAC streams unlinked.
That works perfectly and sync between both zones in my application is not necessary.

Thank you - Case closed and solved.
