Video displaying improperly
« on: September 15, 2024, 09:59:37 pm »

I have numerous videos stored in MC.

With MC33, there seems to be an issue with playing those videos.

An example...

That video used to display properly in MC32.

More info...

When I reconfigure MC33 ...

Tools>Options>Video>General Video Settings>Video Mode

From the default Red October JRVR (recommended)

to

Red October Standard

the videos play properly, as they always have played in prior versions.

How can I help resolve this?

What type of file?

Can you describe the problem?  It's not clear from the image.

We'll definitely need some information on the video, and your graphics card. Might be a driver incompatibility.

As a first step to troubleshoot, you can also try in the Options, "Video -> Hardware accelerated video decoding", and toggle that to the opposite of that its now, just to test if it changes this.

OK, I set the video mode back to RedOctober JRVR (recommended.

Then i toggled the hardware acceleration setting to "off."

I then shut down and restarted the MC client.

After that, the video plays with the usual MC quality.  All is good.

(note to JimH - I have a better video of what I saw, I''ll try to upload it in another message)

I could not upload the video, too large for the forum.

So I sent you a link in a private message from which you can download what I see.

Can you post a log from MC, so we can see if it complains about anything?
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

You could also try updating your driver (2019 is quite ways back), this should be the latest for you GPU:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/228836/

NVIDIA 700 series is only supported by the legacy drivers at this point, but no reason it shouldn't run with JRVR

One step ahead of you.

I just downloaded the current driver from the Nvidia site (circa 2020)

I turned on h/w acceleration.

I saw the same distorted video.

Stand by for the log...

Note: it is getting a bit late (or early, depending upon your perspective) here on the east coast.

So, I'm signing off for the night (morning).

I'll check back in on the morrow sometime.

Sorry, I don't see the start of playback in that log, which would have all the important information. Did you make sure playback was stopped before enabling logging, and then start a fresh file?

The issue in the video looks like it may be lacking proper synchronization, the log might confirm this. I'll also go dig in my bin of graphics cards to see if i find something of similar age for testing.

To clarify, does this happen with any videos, or just some?

One final setting you can try is in the JRVR Settings -> Advanced -> Always copy HW decoder input frames (its in the Trade Quality for Performance block, although it doesn't quite fit in there as its not a quality option)

I checked this morning.   Just some videos exhibit the issue.

That worked.

fwiw, if it would help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue, I can send you a private message with a link to download a video that exhibits the issue.  Let me know.

That might be helpful. Maybe its a problem with the file type afterall, and not the old-ish graphics card.

Keeping the option on we tried last might be a good intermediate solution.

... Maybe its a problem with the file type afterall, and not the old-ish graphics card....

Yeah, the PC I use as a MC client in my entertainment center is not recent.  I plan to replace it next year to install a Win11-based replacement.

The current crop of Intel video chips seem to be quite good enough for my needs going forward.

Indeed, the current MC PC has an Intel video chip, but Intel stopped providing drivers for Win10.  So when I moved it from Win7 to Win10 that's when I switched to NVidia.  I had to get an old NVidia card for the old bus in the PC.

All this is to say the following...

The workaround you provided in a prior comment works quite well for me.

So... if I am the only person who noticed this issue, don't waste time trying to resolve the issue I had been seeing.

I'm good here.
