Picture too dark on some scenes
« on: October 28, 2024, 12:33:02 pm »

I watched Back to the future 1 and 2 on UHD yesterday. I used JRiver's in-house scaler the whole time. With Back to the future I had the problem that the image was too dark in some scenes (it somehow looked like a dark veil over the image). Now I installed MadVR in the latest beta and used your settings. The same scenes that were too dark in JRiver look great here! The only thing that annoys me is that the rendering time is much longer than with JRiver. I have around 28ms. I use a 4060TI. But I didn't notice any jerks or anything like that. Everything looked very good!

Will there be any improvements regarding the too dark picture? Maybe you will support superresolution and HDR for RTX (Nvidia) also? Hopefully the dynamic tonemapping and HDR-SDR conversation will be as good as madvr sometime. Like i said. I love your in-house scaler but madvr is a little bit better. Madvr uses too many resources and i really want to use your scaler instead.

I'm not aware of that as a general problem.  Sorry.

Now you are  :). Could you take a look into it? Like I said. I really love your scaler and didn’t want to use madvr.

Occasional reports of problems are usually due to incorrect settings.

Like i said. With Madvr i have no problems. Video isn't too dark. This is no criticism on JRiver. I really love the programm. But fixing this and maybe support superresolution and HDR for RTX Nvidia cards would be the cherry on the pie ;). Incorrect settings i would excluse. There are not so much settings to choose from. I filled out the target nits (65) and enable contrast recovery strehngth 0.4. Is there maybe more that would help me to get the picture brighter?

HDR performance is often a matter of settings to match your screen better. I would recommend to not use quite as low of a target nits, it can cause some problems compressing the image as much. Play around with the value a bit and see how you like the result.

Thanks Hendrik for the Tipp. Any other settings that might help?

You may need to experiment by changing one at a time.  Hendrik gave you a starting point.

What is the display?

It’s a projector. Epson LS10000 (Laser).

There's a thread around somewhere on projectors.  Maybe at AVSForum.
