How do I get column presets to stick?
« on: November 11, 2024, 04:44:21 pm »

I have a column preset that I love and I want to apply it to basically everything. But the problem is that when I apply it to an album, click on another album and then click back, its back to the way it was. How do I apply it to all of my music and have it say that way.

I did read on here that somebody else had the same problem and it was solved by making the adjustments to the server not the client. That's a bit over my head, I am pretty sure I am making the changes on the server, I have never set up a DLNA before so...? This stuff is really confusing to be, I am not even that old haha. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Depending on the what is being shown (albums, artists, movies, images, etc.) you may want to use different column presets for media type being listed.  Fortunately, MC provides a very easy way to do that - see picture below.  For step 1, right-click any column header. Remaining steps should be self-explanatory.

Just now noticed you are also inquiring about server/client with respect to columns.  I don't have a server/client set up, but I definitely recall forum threads about keeping columns in sync between them can be difficult.  Somebody with more exact knowledge about that will hopefully weigh in.

If I had a server/client set up, I imagine I would be jumping for joy right now! I saw another thread where you indicated the future update will also deal with remembering thumbnail sizes. Great work!

It might be useful to indicate other server/client sync issues this update will address so users are aware of what they have to look forward to.

How about TrackInfo on clients when serving as remotes?

It just will store custom UI view state settings (columns, thumbnail size, sorting, etc.) on the client.  Client/server syncing is not changed at all.

Custom client view settings is coming soon.

What about things like saving column sizes for clients? I have a server that uses a 1080p monitor and one of my clients, which uses a 1440p monitor, inherits the column sizes/locations from the 1080p server view. I can resize them in the client but the changes aren't persistent and when I close/reopen the client it resets back to the 1080p server column sizes/locations. I'm hoping that's what you mean about custom client view settings?

Yes, that is exactly what it will do (see post above).

I have been doing all of those steps, it applies well, but then after I click away on something else, when I go back its completely gone...??

I haven't set up a client so i am convinced it cant be that, It sounds like you have to know what you are doing to set that up in the first place.

When you save the column layout preset it automatically applies it to the active view.  If you want to apply the same layout/preset to other views, go to the other view to make it active, right click on any column header, click presets, and then choose the preset you just created - viola!

MC remembers the column layout for each and every view you create, but you will have to go to each of those views and select the preset for it to be applied. In this way, MC allows specific column layouts appropriate to the media listed.  A given view's column layout remains unchanged until you either: choose a new preset, or you manually add or remove columns.

Any manual changes you decide you don't like, you can simply reselect the preset you already created to get it back.  If however you like the new column layout, simply save that to a new named custom preset.  Create as many presets as you like.

I only mentioned the information about client/server as you referenced it in your OP.  Sorry for the confusion.

Clearly I am doing something wrong then, because it works nothing like that on my computer. For me, I save a preset, lets say on an album in album view, it saves just fine, I click on another album and my saved preset isn't there, then I click back on the original album and the preset is gone there too.

I do have two instances of MC, one on my laptop (my primary one), and one on my desktop (primarily for ripping and importing CD audio). The issues I have been describing have been on my laptop. My desktop, I just realized will save which columns are active and the column order but not the column width, they all go back to the default width when I switch to another album.

So on your desktop you save a custom preset, navigate about MC doing whatever, and the custom preset you saved previously still appears in the list of presets… right?  Which you can then apply to other views and the column layout sticks, correct?  If so, congratulations, sounds like it works on your desktop. As for column widths reverting, that is driven by an MC setting.  Go to Options/Tree & View/List, and uncheck Auto size columns.  Resize the columns to what you want (again) and save the preset (again). You will have to select/apply the updated preset (again) to other views where you want it shown. After that, the custom columns AND widths should hold.

On your laptop though, you save a preset, and after navigating to other views, the preset just disappears from the preset list? If so, I am not sure what to tell you, Matt (an MC developer) would probably have to jump in here to figure that one out.

That said, you say you run two MC "instances" - does that mean the laptop and desktop share the same library? Or are they literally two completely independent installs with two different libraries? If they share a library, I am guessing the library is stored on your desktop, and maybe that's why the presets works there and not your laptop?  I'm only speculating as I don't run multiple MC instances, but it could be that sharing a library is effectively a "client/server" and thus has the limitations discussed earlier in the thread.

I just got to try the custom sizes for columns out on my Linux client and it works fine... as long as the whole Media Network feature is enabled in the client (MC's Options > General > Features > Media Network enabled). Typically I keep the Media Network feature disabled unless it's the server so this threw me off for a moment. Reason for that is with it enabled there's a lag of a few seconds when starting MC. On clients with it disabled MC starts nearly instantly.

I don't suppose there's not any way it could work without Media Network as a whole being enabled? I'm fine if that can't be the case, just wondering and also making a note here in case anyone else tries this and also has the entire Media Network feature completely disabled.

Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you. First let me say thank you for your replies! I really appreciate the helpful info! Your suggestion solved the width issue on my desktop!

So, for a bit of background, I upgraded my old laptop to a fanless MeLE mini pc and I figured I'd update to the newest version of MC while I was at it (I was using 31). I also tried disabling the "media network feature" on both PC's to see if that was creating any issues (because like I said I don't ever remember setting that up). And everything seems to be working now, don't know which of the previously mentioned things is to blame for the success but... I don't care haha.

Thank you for sticking with me guys! I have another issue now though haha... I need to figure out how to transfer over my music library to my new dedicated audio PC, while retaining all the hard work I have done to tag/sort my music collection. But I'll make a fresh post for that. Thanks again everyone who helped!
