MC 33 - client thumbnail size - need to set default
« on: November 12, 2024, 10:18:13 am »

Running MC 33 server from standard desktop PC.  I can set thumbnail size by the slider button and when MC is restarted previously set thumbnail size is maintained.  However, on the client side with a 75" monitor, the thumbnails are very small, too small to read.  Setting thumbnail size by slider is easily done but is not maintained if MC is restarted.  This issue has been raised with previous MC versions but do not see any positive responses / solutions posted.

Is it really impossible to set client thumbnail size that will be maintained after MC is restarted?

Thank you in advance!!

Custom client view settings is coming soon.
Good news.  Will it be an option setting or a visible dynamic setting, or preferably both?

One thing I've always wished for (and requested in the past) is a dynamic display of some number when adjusting the Thumbnail Size Slider.  This could be a tooltip which updates in real time when you adjust the Thumbnail Size Slider with the mouse or arrow keys.   The Volume Slider has this for the mouse.  The Position Slider also has a pop up for this (though it is rather fiddly with regard to mouse motion).

What should the number be?  I'd like to see the number of thumbnails per line, taking into account current screen resolution.

(1)  In one approach, the number of thumbnails per line is normalized to MC full screen display with the left panel Tree hidden.  That would make it easy to repeat specific size thumbnail displays on a given monitor, as well as set up analogous (geometrically "similar") displays on a server and clients which typically have different screen resolutions.  Since the Tree width is highly variable, it would not be considered in calculating the number, in order to keep thumbnail size constant as the Tree width changes on a given monitor.  A pesky detail would also take into account the skin's border size and vertical scrollbar width.

(2) In another approach, the size of the thumbnails changes to give same number of visible thumbnails per line as the Tree width changes.

I much prefer (1) - it is closer to current behavior.  I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thank you cncb, and markf2748 suggestion is a good approach.  Hope to see client view settings soon, MC v34.0?

Thanks again!

It just will store custom UI view state settings (columns, thumbnail size, sorting, etc.) on the client.  How these settings are used will not change.

OK, thanks for the clarification.  Makes sense.

Associating and displaying a single logical number with the Thumbnail Slider which holds its meaning across different displays (Reply #2 above) is an old pet peeve of mine, going back at least to MC29:

Please consider it as a separate but related feature request, raised again.
