Questions concerning Media Server
« on: Today at 10:44:33 am »

I have connected a Client to the MC Media Server and now I have some questions:

1. Is it the expected behaviour that the client copies the whole library from the server if there are any changes in the library on the server since the last connection?

2. When I play tracks on the client the 'Last Played' information is not updated, neither on the client nor on the server.

The information in the Wiki https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Server is not clear:
It says: "... any changes you make on the client are not saved on the server until you select Library Sync... from the Library menu selection." and later "The client will send play count and last played information back to the server."
Does that mean I have to perform Library Sync everytime I want an update of Play Count and Last Played or should this happen automatically?

- Client keeps a full copy of the DB, but each sync only transmits a Delta of the changes needed to bring the local DB up to date.
- You need to connect the Client with non-guest authentication, otherwise it's in read-only mode and no changes will be relayed back to the server, including Play count
- The number of plays / Last Played is only updated when the track is played at least 50% (or 90%? I'm not sure)
- Client will automatically sync changes to the server about once per minute (and on startup/exit). No need to manually do a Library Sync.

Thanks for the quick answer.

How do I "connect the Client with non-guest authentication"?

Under File -> Library -> 'Connect to Remote Library' there is just Library Server where I can enter the access key.

Is the information in the Wiki outdated then?

On the server, you need to set up authentication (login / password).

Thank you all, it is working now.

I wish this was described clearly in the Wiki or in a manual.
And this is what I would expect of a commercial product!

Your first post was 4 hours before your "it's working now". The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

A few years ago my company paid about 250.000€ (IIRC) for a NetApp SAN appliance + a couple PB of storage, plus I don't know how much for a support contract. We had an open ticket about inconsistent folder timestamps (non-POSIX compliant) for 18 months - this was causing occasional data loss as different clients were seeing different timestamps and sometimes overwriting newer data. It was finally solved after a major NetApp OS upgrade.

Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, Autodesk, take your pick - it doesn't matter how much you pay. Often the larger the company the worse the service, unless you have the CEO's number on speed dial.

Don't get me wrong. I don't complain about the service. This is perfect. My problem is the lack of documentation. That's why one has to ask for everything.

If there was a clear statement in the wiki that I need authentification I would not have to ask in the first place.

I really like your software, I just wish the documentation would be better.

I don't disagree there.
