Clone Library Question
« on: April 30, 2025, 12:39:16 pm »

I just upgraded to MC 34 from MC 33.

I have multiple libraries.  Note: I have separate libraries for each version of MC.

When I do the upgrade all my MC 34 libraries are pointed to my MC 33 libraries.  I overcome this by cloning my MC 33 libraries.  But when I clone the libraries, MC does not bring over the Auto-import settings. Is this the expected behavior?

Note: this is the same behavior as MC 33.  It is not MC 34 specific.

Bob, could you comment on this?

Specifically on the Library Clone not bringing over the Auto-import settings.

Also, am I understanding correctly how the newer upgrade process for MACs work when using multiple libraries?

The new library doesn't "point to" the old one.  It is a new library, converted from the old one.  They are separate libraries.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply.

I think I created some confusion here.
In addition to my "Main" Library, I have 3 other custom libraries.

-----Main Library Behavior-------------
My Main library is stored in the default location (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 33/Library/

When I upgrade MC from MC33 to MC34, the upgrade process automatically converts and copies this library to a new MC 34 folder in the default location (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/Library/

This behavior is exactly what you described.

-----Custom Library Behavior-----------
My custom libraries are not stored in the default location in the ...Library/Application Support/ folder.

I have 3 custom libraries, FLAC, MP3 and Test. Following is a description of the FLAC library but all 3 behave the same.

They are in a folder /Users/randy/My Stuff/ JRiver Library V33/FLAC/

When I upgrade MC from MC33 to MC34, the upgrade process automatically points MC34 to the MC 33 Library.

I now have both MC33 and MC34 pointing to the MC 33 library in the folder /Users/randy/My Stuff/ JRiver Library V33/FLAC/

I then Clone the MC33 library into a new MC34 folder after which I have 2 folders, one for each version of MC.

/Users/randy/My Stuff/ JRiver Library V33/FLAC/
/Users/randy/My Stuff/ JRiver Library V34/FLAC/

The Clone does not copy the Auto-import settings, so I then set up my auto-import settings for my 3 custom libraries.

-------------maybe I should be doing the following---------

Store all my libraries in the default folder structure.  Possibly the MC upgrade process would automatically handle everything.

Store Main library in the default location (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/Library/

For my 3 custom libraries, put them in separate folders under ...Library/Application Support/J River 34/

This would result in 4 folders. Main plus 3 custom,

Main library (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/Library/
FLAC library (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/FLAC/
MP3 library (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/MP3/
Test library (...Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 34/Test/

If I set it up this way, would MC automatically copy these into the next version when I upgrade to MC35?

You are correct. MC34 doesn't look for multiple libraries, it only updates the main Library.

Thanks Bob..

One more question, when I clone a library, MC does not bring over the Auto-import settings. Is this the expected behavior?

The auto imports are in Settings IIRC. I'd think the upgrade would work. Just making a copy of the existing library would not.
