You are always going to get a few drops at the start of playback, or at least I've never been able to not make that happen. Once you reset the stats (Ctrl+R), do you get anymore dropped frames?
Do you have the ability to run everything at 120hz? That gives JRVR more options to pick the right frame and I find gives me rock solid smooth playback.
You may also want to play with toggling hardware acceleration on and off under MC > Options > Video to see if that helps as well.
The OLED vs Plasma issue has nothing to do with JRiver. OLED because of its instantaneous response time will always show more stutter when panning. You may want to turn on the motion features in the OLED including interpolation and BFI if you have it to see if that helps.
The thing that helps me the most is setting the OLED backlight to 50 percent when in a dark room or at night and that significantly reduces the impact of the stutter and reduces overall eye strain. I have a LG C1 and while definitely not the brightest during the day, it's actually too bright for me at night. haha.
