I have the exact same problem with similar configuration.

I suspect Windows ME related.

I Google searched on "unicode layer" and found a MS download, but I am reluctant to do that.

Can someone confirm if that is what is needed?

We're still working the kinks out of the conversion to Unicode.

Whatever program is complaining can't find "unicows.dll".  It should be in your system directory.  Maybe try putting a copy in your MJ directory.

Let us know...

Here is the MS link, but it is no big help.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/win9x/unilayer_4wj7.asp

I searched my whole system and there are two existing unicows.dll, each in the program directory.  So maybe that is the ticket.

The program that is "complaining" is the Media Center 9 installation.  It gets stuck there.  It does not mention the specific file unicows.dll, but jus says failed to initialize.

sometimes just writing a note here jogs your thought process.....

I put the unicows.dll into the DOWNLOADS directory where I was running the installation program from!!  The layer error is gone and the installation process begins.  It asks for Custom vs. Express and which either choice, a couple of dialog boxes flash but nothing is installed.  I tried it over MC9 and it didnt work, uninstalled previous version, still did not work.  It flashes a "copying files" dialog box for only a second and then is done.

I cant mess with it anymore for a while, but thought maybe someone could move this forward for us unfortunates running Win ME!!

You may have a temp file problem.  IE has a bug.

Try this.  IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet Files/Delete files.  It can take several minutes.

I'm not sure what the Temp file would have to do with it but I tried as you suggested.

If you meant an old copy of the Install file, i have downloaded and saved MediaCenter900095 or whatever it is named, but it is a .95 specifiec executable, not a cached version of a previous download.

In anycase, I re-ran the intall with same results.  It starts the installation program but doesn't actually update any files.

Does the installer create a log file that can be reviewed for errors?

it fills up and it is not cleaned like it should be.

programs sometimes do not install because of this.

Well i followed RoBOK's advice and I got it istalled w/ ME (thanks RoBOK!!).

Just a note (in case others are trying) i downloaded the .95 executable and ran in a temp library (it gave me the unicode error).  Then I downloaded the dll RoBok mentioned and put it in the Windows System folder as well as the RARSFXO/System folder (created by the .95 executable during the failed extraction).  Then I used the Installwizard.exe in RarSFXO folder and what do you know?  I'm in - and I verified it's the correct version.

Thanks again RoBOK.

Well it turns out i needed help from Moriarty!!!

I hadnt tried putting the DLL into that temp created directory.

Also, I have two versions of the DLL running around my system -- the first did not work, but the larger file size one DID work!!!  Yeah!

ROBok and Moriarty:

You guys are both AWESOME!!  Never would have figured this one out on my own--wouldn't even known where to start...

I saved both the unicode download and the MC95 file into my jriver file folder, then ran the MC9 file from there, and somehow it all worked.  Not sure how, not sure why, but it did; I now have 95 up and running!

So now I am able to suffer the 95 bugs like everyone else--life is good!!
