what does unicode mean?

I understand that the primary reason for the long wait after .89 is that you are working on a unicode version.

I haven't got the slightest clue what this means...
could you explain this to a simple, mortal being?

It will allow MC to support international character sets that require more than the "standard" ASCII.  This should provide support for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and many more.
