Media Server Question
« on: December 30, 2002, 08:54:21 am »

Is there any way to access the Media Server remotly without having MC installed?  I would like to access it from work, but not put the full MC client on my work machine... Any help?

Thanks,
Matthew

No.  You need the full version (and same version) on each PC.

Does Media Server even work in MC 9 ??

I haven't managed to get it to work (which is a real pain).

It works very well if you manually catalog the remote library.   The search function has problems for many people.

You can manually catalog the library by going to the library manager and using the format "m01p://yourserver:yourport" for the location.

I don't like it the way it is.

Most users don't have a Phd In Computer Science to get the Media Server To Work.

Before [Connect] Enter Address

Now it is 3 or 4 layers thick

Hi Remy,

The problem is that I've done this and it still didn't work.

I shall give it another go within the next hour and see how I get on.

KingSparta - I totally agree with your comment.  In MJ 8 I could use the media server without any problems - it just worked  ;D

In MC 9 it is not very easy.  If they have had to do this to allow the 'auto find' function to work then I would prefer for it to go back the old way and I have to find the Media Server manually (at least it worked).

Hopefully - they will sort this out in the next build (especially if Jim wants MC to be the media hub of the home - and you can't even connect  ::) )

Remy's method will work.  If it didn't, it may be an error in the syntax.

Sorry for this long post - but Media Server just does not work for me - and I really want it to work as I've just moved one of my PC's into my Lounge and want to use the Media Server Remotely.

Firstly, when I start Media Server it is using the wrong IP Address of my machine.  You see I have two networks on my PC as below:

The network highlighted is actually something my TV Card creates and is not a 'real' network.  My 'real' network is the one called 'Home Wired Lan' and it is this one which the media server should use.  However, I don't see a way of telling Media Server which IP to bind onto (only which port).

If I 'disable' the TV Card network then it switches to use the correct Network - although I still get the following errors.

Once Media Server is running I check the port number as below - I'm using 80 as my port number:

So I then start the Media Server:

Now I'm confused.  Why is it showing port 80 at the top of the screen - but port 5556 at the bottom of the screen ?  Something - doesn't look right here !  I told it to use port 80.

At this point I'm not sure what I should be connecting to.  But anyway from my remote PC I make a connection (in fact two as I try port 80 and then 5556).  Both times I see the following on the Media Server:

And I can't connect.

Closely followed by the message:

By the way - do you actually get these bug reports from Microsoft - or is it a waste of time to 'send an error report' ??

So I have no idea what is wrong - but I just cannot get Media Server to work correctly.

Any Ideas as I really want this functionality, otherwise I'm using two copies of MC on two machines with one set of files (which I don't think is advised).

Thanks,

Mark

P.S. Is anyone else having problems with Media Server ? As Remy seems to be okay and I don't understand why I'm not (it doesn't work on two machines I have).

First, the media server always binds to ALL ip addresses but only shows the first one it finds in the title bar.  If you open a command prompt and type "netstat -an" you should see an entry with a local address of "0.0.0.0:80" and a state of listening.  The 0.0.0.0 part means all local interfaces.

Second, the media server uses port 5556 to listen for search requests from clients.  It's fixed.  If you don't want it to listed for search requests, you can disable it in the media server's general options.

OK, the real error is the "could not open <(null)>" message in the media server window.   Open the media server options and make sure you have a valid library selected in the "Library" page.  Make sure you can open the library directly from MC on the same machine.

Are played files through Media servers supposed to update the play cound in MC?  I figured they should or it should at least be an option.... Doesn't appear to do this.

I don't want mine to update if it is a user other than me playing the music.

I would agree with that... Does Media Server log access?

This way someone could write a plugin that would allow for you to specify certain IPs to be included and parse through the logs once per day/week/month and update counts accordingly.
