Upgrade Price Misleading
« on: December 27, 2002, 07:02:11 pm »

Media Center will be priced at $39.98 on release, but we have a better
offer for you now  -- through December 31, you can purchase the new Media
Center version for $29.98. If you already own a version 8.0 license, you
can upgrade to MC now for $7.98.

So I have a licensed 8.0 version, do the upgrade, and am charged 29.98.  I would say that is a rip.

Can I get an explanation besides being referred to the FAQ where there is no explanation?

Very disappointed to pay so much based on false information given by J River. >:(

Sounds like a mistake to me. They all seem to be sort of in and out this week. Don't give up and maybe next week you can either fix it or find out what's going on.

The only thing I can think of right off the top of my head... and keep in mind that this is based on absolutely NO information on how the upgrade process from an 8 license to a 9 license is supposed to happen, is that maybe you didn't actually do what you were supposed to do to get the upgrade? And instead you just went and purchased it straight out? Just a guess.

But like C8 said, I'm sure they'll be willing to help you out if you politely bring it to their attention.

I think he should have went thru the program to get the discount and did not. and just went directly to the website and bought a new license for MC9

Most of the time this is Due to not reading the directions to get the discount.

I don't think they will refund the money.

When you buy it tells you the price, if it should have been $7.98 why anyone would enter the CC number in and press buy at $29.98 is beyond me.

Maybe he did mess up but it sounds like the 'Buy' process maybe could be modified slightly now that there are so many different ways to buy (upgrade/from new/etc).
Maybe just add an extra screen in the process saying what do you wish to do:
  • Buy from New
  • Upgrade
  • Do a restore (not buying I know but might help people out)
  • Take advantage of a special offer
  • etc

Then there would be no chance of mess up's like this.
If they chose up whichever option then they would be prompted for the appropriate information.

I was thinking about that too, that Maybe the user could select Buy Fullversion, Upgrade, enter in his Old code, and the system could do the rest and send him the new code in e-mail.

I searched for a license using the e-mail you use for your Interact account.  I can only find one license for anyone named M***s.  It is the version 9 license.

This _probably_ means you were using version 8 with a version 7 license.  There is no upgrade price.  $29.98 is correct.  The details are in the V9 FAQ:

www.mediajukebox.com/purchase

If you have a version 8 license, please send any details to jimh @ jriver.com.

I did not have a Version 7 license.  I had an 8 version.  When the 9 was updated, the 8 files (except for the library) were deleted (the program told me this).

I did not go to the web site and just buy it.  I used the email message, then was directed to help in my Media 8 version where I followed the instructions.  When upgraded, my 8 files were checked.  I had a licensed version.  But, it seems, the download can take away my licensed 8 and give me 29.98 upgrade.  This stinks.

Interesting that it is "my fault" and I need to furnish information to validate my claim.  This is the weakness of using this program.  Of course, if I can't find the 8 code I wrote down six months ago, then I'm stuck.

I like the program, but I've been stiffed before.

Should things in the world go unchecked?

validation is a good thing

I hope you send the info, if this is a problem with the upgrade system you would be helping others.

Paul,
I'd like to ask you to be polite.  I will help you.  Comments like "this stinks" won't get  you better service.

The confusion, I believe, is that a version 7 license works with version 8, so sometimes people think they have a version 8 license when it is a version 7 license.

The only way you could have had a version 8 license is if you were using one registered under a different name.  I looked in our records before my last reply.

If you can't produce a receipt of any kind or details on the purchase, I can't help you.

I'll just add my 2 lira.
I'm the type of fellow who never erases anything (or throws it away, either) so I have my original email with the code on it. All I have had to do in the past is copy / paste for the VERY few times I've had to restore my license.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe somewhere in the deep recesses of your computer files lies the registration code. If it can be produced, that's your sales receipt. Even Wal-Mart asks for one of those.

This is an example of why you should ALWAYS keep registration e-mails, etc. in a safe place.  I keep all those types of messages is a folder marked "Registrations".  My e-mail client also does a daily backup of all messages.  I also keep registration info on my PDA.  You can never be too safe with important data!
