When playing certain files, I get at playbackeng.dll error message and MJ 9.0.80 closes.

It appears to happen on several formats and the files are always playable in several other programs, usually always in Irfanview.

Is there a solution short of trying a beta? Is this a known issue?

Maybe report this to the bug thread at the MJ 9 forum.

If it's certain formats, let us know which ones.  We may need a file that causes problems if we can't reproduce it.

I posted a few more details on a new thread on the link you suggested. I'd hoped the 9 Alpha was out of beta.

Are the files usually WMA?  Were they encoded with WMP9?

No, Jim, they were MP3, .avi and .mpeg -- not a WMA in the bunch. Not sure of how they were encoded.

Did you try a reboot and reinstall?  Something isn't right.  You shouldn't be seeing that.

Other programs installed that may be grabbing the file type?  RealOne, for example?

Reinstalled MJ 9 twice.

Reboots don't seem to help.

I freed myself of RealOne quite sometime ago and have the RealPlayer via a link from here.

IrfanView is the default viewer for all video and graphic filetypes. Windows Media Player is default for midis and its own types. RealPlayer, QuickTime and MediaJukebox are not associated with ANY filetypes.

I listen or view from the Library exclusively.

Installation wasn't a problem; but, since the playbackeng.dll error only occured after MJ was running for awhile, I tried a bit more Library organizing.

The temporary sorting Library I chose was intact after the installation (so my backup wasn't needed.) I went to import about 100 files and there the troubles began. MJ seemed to hang after about 20 files were processed. Then I got a Runtime Error stating 'abnormal program termination' but the program didn't terminate - when I minimized it, I found the system warning "MJ has caused an error in Kernel32.dll ...."

I rebooted and found the Libaray was roughly 20 files larger  -- I tried again and the same thing happened. This time I tried to continue without the reboot and it processed another 20 files and repeated the messages. MJ seems to play alright and I haven't found the troublemaking files (to be honest, I may have deleted them as unwanted or duplicates of lesser quality already, but I will keep looking.)

You've got something special going on.  Are the files on a network drive, or a firewire drive?  Are they big files?  What's different about your files?

If you have a lot of movies, MJ creates a thumbnail for each, and that hasn't been thoroughly tested.  That's about all I can think of.

Any help you can be in narrowing it down would be appreciated.

No Network drives, no firewire.

A few hundred, mainly clips or short videos. not entire movies. Size isn't larger than most MP3s.

On a postive note (but totally off the thread,) your mention of encoding earlier lead me to try something I read about conversions. I used MJ to convert an MP3 to wave, then used WinVorbis to encode it as .ogg and the size was almost 1/3 smaller with no appreciable sound loss. That'll keep me busy when the snow flies, but it should save a lot of space. Thanks for mentioning it, it was one of those things I kept meaning to experiment with but never got the time.

If nothing else comes of the day, that was worth the time.

When I Updated a Library, upon completion a Download box opened for 'plug-ins' and it claimed it could not find a Server. (Although I was connected at the time.)

I have no idea what plug-in it wants.

I went to the plug-ins manager and dowloaded everything conceiveable. The same Dialog returned when I updated a library and the window that was trying to connect had "Playbackeng" as it's title. It still failed.

Should I be concerned?

AsparaGus, The Beta Tester:

There were some issues with Win98SE and WinME that were resolved with 90083. My machine (WIN98SE) now runs 90084 without a hitch. You're already into the Betas, why not stay at the front?

If it makes you feel any better, the splash screen still says "alpha".

Thanks, might as well enjoy the allusion of an Alpha while staying on the cutting edge of disasters.

I've gotten to the point where I can reinstall ME in under 90 minutes. Can replace a useable image in 20, but where's the fun in that.

Ok, Updating the Library ends up in the same set of 3 error messages with the newer alpha-beta.

Downloading plugin information

MJReader failed to connect to a server (although I am entering this message while still connected...)

Playbackeng failed to download plugin information
