TV no longer works with .71
« on: November 03, 2002, 08:50:38 am »

Yikes!  Went to turn on some football today and the TV no longer functions!  It appears to try and start playback, then pops up a "playbackeng" error.  When I hit OK, it seems to try the next channel, but with the same results.  Repeat about 5 times, and an error pops up saying that "MJ has failed to play the last few tracks, make sure that the path in your library is correct"  Worst part, I can't downgrade to 9.0.70 because it's expired!  This is pretty impactful because the TV function is about 70% of what I depend on MJ for.  Oh woe is me, please help!

The only things that I can remember doing yesterday that might have triggered this is I left MJ running all night analyzing my music.  Also, I installed Tribes2 a couple days ago.

Rebooting didn't fix the TV, nor did a reinstall of MJ.

Kurt,
We broke TV in 71, I think.  At least on some PC's.  It works on one of mine and not on the other.  It's because of the new recording.

I e-mailed you a new set of files that might work.

Update:

After doing a full uninstall (removing registry entries and libraries), MJ TV kind of works.  Well, not really.  I get some video, very choppy, though.  When I change a channel it tries to access my floppy drive for some reason, then freezes up.  Gui lock, and 75% or more cpu time used.  Only way out was to "end task" on it.  When the "you chose to end the nonresponsive program" box came up, and offered to send a report to microsoft, I captured the dump files.  Here they are, but I have no idea if they're of use to you.

Edit:  Woah, that's a fast response!  I put the files in <install dir>\TV where the other ones were and registered them... problems appear just like above:  gui lock, high cpu use, and no football.  Gonna re-register them and immediately reboot, see if that helps out.

Aye, the files you sent work... sort of.  ;D

Video is mighty choppy, almost like it's skipping packs of frames at a time; there are horizontal (i forget what they're called... antialias lines?) lines in high-motion areas.  And the audio gives a 4-second echo (like someone says something, and you hear it again 4 seconds later).

Sorry I freaked, I know it's alpha... but you gotta understand, v69 and v70 were so problem-free for me that it felt like a final release.  No worries.  But you'll forgive me for finding a Plan B for Wednesday night, ;)

Oh, and I fixed the link in my post above if you want the dump files.

The reason it may be choppy is that it is recording TV and compressing it and your PC may not keep up.

That means that ctrl P will pause and resume playback and ctrl right and left arrow will go forward and back.

Your best bet now may be to reinstall build 70.  Just change the 71 to a 70 in the ftp link.  I think the file is still there.

Wow, I'm a complete tool.

I put the new files in Media Jukebox\TV before... I just now noticed that they're in Media Jukebox\ too.  So, I planted them there, registered them.

Better results than before, that's a definate.  Results:
  • No GUI lock, yay!.
  • The horizontal interlace lines (i found out what they were called!) are still there, and playback is still choppy
  • the audio is about three seconds behind the video.
  • Full screen gives you a 320X240 picture in the upper left corner and black everywhere else
  • In windowed mode, the picture doesn't resize at all.

Thanks again for bearing with me today, and I hope that I haven't been difficult or annoying.  I know that y'all will make it everything I need eventually.  Cheers!

Kurt,
You're a model customer.  Whenever you have a problem, you ask.  It is deeply (no kidding) appreciated.

The TV thing is really hairy right now because 71 was never meant for release.  It was let go only because 70 had the timeout problem.

We should get a reasonable build out on Monday.

Kurt,

Sorry about all your problems. Please try these measures and see if they help:

1. Use registry editor to change "Start In TimeShifting Mode" value under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music Exchange\1.0\Media Jukebox\TV Settings\

A value of 1 means TV is started in timeshifting mode. It is very CPU intensive. A value of 0 allows you to start TV in regular mode. You can later try starting Timeshifting manually.

2. If you try timeshifting, and the picture is choppy, please try turning off video compression. You can access configuration dialog when in regular playing mode (the right-click menu is not available during timeshifting because I forgot something, sorry).

Let us know if these help.

Hiya Yaobing,

No such value exists in the key that you mentioned.  I don't mind creating one, though... should it be a string or a dword?

Edit:  Made it a dword.  Woot!  Watching tv with ease!

Yea, I should have said it. It is a DWORD value. Glad you figured it out.

In Build 72 which is out today, this flag defaults to 0, so TV will start in regular mode. For those of you who want TV to start in TimeShifting mode, you need to edit the value and set it to 1. Of couse, having started in regular mode, you can go to timeshift mode simply by pressing the Pause button.
