Media Jukebox 9.0 Preview VIII - 2 (UPDATED)
« on: October 04, 2002, 03:45:12 pm »

There's an update version of the Media Jukebox 9.0 preview here, but FIRST PLEASE READ THIS:

IMPORTANT-- This is only a preview -- some things don't work, some things crash, and your data may not be safe. Don't use this preview with files that can't be replaced. If you don't consider yourself an expert with Media Jukebox, please wait for a later release. Backup your database (and files) before doing anything else.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download the preview here:

\ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox90065.exe

This version introduces a new playback engine that is not finished.  It still has many problems, including no DSP Studio and probably numerous stalls and dead-locks.

When it is done, it will allow playback, decoding, audio analysis, on-the-fly format conversion, and on-the-fly burning all through the same system.  This will help speed and format support in all those tools, make DSP and cross-fading available in most places, and it will also make input and output formats independent. (i.e. output a CD at 24-bit 192 khz 5.1)

This is a huge change, so only try this build if you really don't mind gremlins.

Changes in 9.0.65

1. Fixed: Double-clicking the tree not on an item would start playback.
2. NEW: Input and output audio formats fully independent. (UI / options to follow)
3. Changed: Image thumbnailing thread uses lower priority so it interferes with MJ less.
4. Fixed: Numeric groupings weren't always working.
5. Fixed: Smartlists were running their query twice so modifiers like ~s= didn't work right.
6. Fixed: Jumping to full-screen could crash MJ.

Changes in 9.0.64

1. NEW: Search bar visible in all library views.
2. Fixed: Numberic tree groupings weren't working properly.
3. Fixed: The right-view would unnecessarily update under several circumstances.
4. Changed: Right-click -> Send To in the tree no longer changes the view.
5. Changed: Skin Manager "Cancel" changed to "Close".
6. Fixed: Search Control "Add Keyword" after a "Add Rule" didn't work.
7. Fixed: Search Control wizard filtering wasn't working when creating a new rule.
8. NEW: Added Search Wizard auto-filtering toggle checkbox.
9. NEW: Added Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V support to the search control.
10. Changed: Audio Analyzer now updates file tags as it finishes each file.
11. Fixed: File lists were not using MJ MEGA-ME skinning.
12. Fixed: OGG tagging would duplicate fields.
13. NEW: OGG "Format" page now displays a full tag dump.
14. NEW: APE "Format" page now displays a full tag dump.
15. Changed: Added a few SDK functions from 8 that hadn't been moved to 9 yet.
16. NEW: Introduced new, integrated player core.

Keep in mind that at this stage in the game, we're getting more bug reports than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help, support, and patience.

So, Dave, uh, does Hairstyle work?

HairStyle works really good! That's the main reason I wanted to try v9 before it hit beta. I just had to see what it would look like.

I had to adjust the PIP window to something a little smaller because the text on the right side was being shortened. That's expected on a 640x480 res.

The only problem right now with HairStyle I see is navigating with only a mouse (touchscreen). I'm sure you guys have more things to come with HairStyle when v9 hits beta.

Eventually, I would like to have MJ start in HairStyle or create a full screen mini-me skin. I'm leaning more towards HairStyle.

I'll have some pics of it for you when v9 becomes more complete..and whenever I get the car done. It's been 2yrs now and still not finished.

Dave, I hope we both get to see our projects finished.  You made me laugh.

Everyone, This version has a couple of things broken for me.  After a quick look, music plays, images don't, search with ctrl-f is not working.

Dave again, let us know what you need to make it work.  It's a good test for the new interface.

Full screen mode won't work on this version.

I can get image playback if I don't try to do fullscreen.

FIXED:  Groupings of Years for the DECADE library now show years that are not the minimum for the group (ie, 1940-1949 now shows 1945, and not just 1940)

STILL BROKE:  BROKE WORSE !  BPM View scheme doesnt work if you create groupings ...
To Replicate:  Create new Audio View Scheme with BPM as the only selection and create GROUPINGs (i use 20 BPM) ... Doesnt matter if you select to show individual items or not .. NOTHING shows up ... :(

NOTE:  I tried the same type of grouping with the "intensity tag" since its numeric .. and it created the same problem ...

Problems fixed (ones I reported anyway)...

  • none

New Problems...

  • The "Random" audio smartlists aren't working.  "one audio cd..."  and "one hour..." are both empty and "one data cd..." always returns 1 track.

Problems remaining open...

  • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%.

  • CD-Text is not being read

  • Still having problems with track entries not being written correctly in Media Library.  Several have now reported this problem.   Track 1 looks like it's being written under the column headers on the first draw of the list.

  • Column resizing still not working.  Auto-resize is off.  Only saves the first of 2 resize operations.  For example, resize a column and change views and the size isn't saved.  Resize a column, then immediately resize it again and the first resize is saved.

  • If you click on "Random - One audio CD worth" you get the list.  If you then right click on "Random - ..." and send to the cd burner, the list get's re-calculated before the send so you don't get what was in the window originally.   (actually, I can't re-test this because of the new problem reported above)

  • For data CDs the directory structure is literally written as "ARTIST\ALBUM" instead of the actual artist and album names.

Problems deleted...

  • Audio CD burns always result in an immediate WRITE failure: TARGET error 04h 00h 04h
Update: Doesn't work with internal ASPI layer regardless of whether V9 or V8.  Have reported separately.
  • CDs now won't play at all.  If you send the entire CD to playing now, the player skips to track 2 and stops.  Press play again and it advances to track 3 and stops.  Restarting the app doesn't fix the problem anymore.  Update: Doesn't work with internal ASPI layer regardless of whether V9 or V8.  Have reported separately.

on-the-fly format conversion,

Do you mean it will be possible to stream (via media server) a 192kbs mp3 track at 128kbs (for example) ?

Nice !

Would it be possible to leave custom field names as they are defined (without prefixing them with "MEDIAJUKEBOX:") ?

I noticed when you do "send to/External tool", there is an option to configure an external tool.

Does this mean we can send to whatever application like mp3gain ?

I assume it has not been implemented yet, because it does not work right now.

This would be an awesome option...

8. NEW: Added Search Wizard auto-filtering toggle checkbox.

Example: Add a rule with the wizard for "genre" and pick "Rock".  Then, add a rule for "artist".  You'll see that it'll only list the artists that match the rest of your search (in this case, genre=rock)  However, now there's a checkbox at the bottom of the rule wizard to turn this filtering off.  Hope that makes sense...

Would it be possible to leave custom field names as they are defined (without prefixing them with "MEDIAJUKEBOX:") ?

Probably.  We're just a little worried about collisions though.  Add it's also tricky since there's no real standard as to what level to use for replay gain. (83 dB vs. 89 dB)

I noticed when you do "send to/External tool", there is an option to configure an external tool.

Does this mean we can send to whatever application like mp3gain ?

Yeah, that's the idea.  It'll be hooked up in a few builds.  For now, you can drag-n-drop files or tree items out to other programs...

Lots of bugs

Yeah -- we're busy with the new playback system, so we may not get tons of bugs fixed for a few days.

If I Allow MJ To Read A CD And Update From YADB.

Then I Delete The Album Name From The Listing Then Do A Update From Database MJ Does Not Refill The Fields. I Am Not Sure But It May Also do this with other fields.

When You Change The Album Name On One Of The Songs, MJ Should Also Update The Other Songs, But It Should Update The Album Name In The Tree To The Left.

But It Does Not.

Then Submiting This Data To YADB Is Adding Bad Data to YADB

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced a playback problem with the 9.x builds when all songs in a playlist finish?   On my system MJ loops attempting to buffer more information sending clicks to the speakers. This only clears when you manually stop the player.

Thanks.

Play List "Auto Smart Lists"

Recently Imported Today Does Not Show Only Today

It Seems It Shows The Last 24 Hours How Ever, Maybe If you Just Change The Title To "Imported The Last 24 Hours"

Recently Imported Last 100 Tracks

What About The Last 200,300,400, 500?

Maybe A Configurable Field?

BUG...

I'm having the same run time error that KingSparta reported on about double clicking on a visualization.  I completly un-installed MJ9, re-booted the computer & re-installed MJ9, but unlike KingSparta, I still have the problem.

As as result i can not get into HairStyle.

For some reason,  MJ crashed ... I reopened it .. and it "REBUILT DATABASE" which wiped out the entire original database ... no biggee ...

But, Im curious ... When I re-imported all of my songs .. it did not pull in the REPLAY GAIN values (BPM, Gain, Intensity, etc) ... are these not stored in the file tag (I work with MP3s) ???

Yay/Nay ?

Confirmation of crash when double clicking on an image in the left pane or main pane.  Also right click then play crashes too.  All with VC++ error screens

New Bug:  If you try to delete a rule in the search box MJ crashes.  Maybe you are not suppose to try and delete them but on the other hand it shouldn't crash either!!

Like the links to editor for pictures.

Fixed: Options box no longer crashes MJ.

Option to set pic as desktop background is nice.  However, XP doesn't seem to register the change in display properties.

Like the rotation of pictures in the right click although it doesn't appear to work yet (Or is that just my system!!)

Properties are still quite audio centric for video and images...

Video crashes MJ also although I guess this is part of the upgrade to the new play engine process...

Things are really moving on.  Each release is more exciting than the last.  Keep it up guys!!

When Submiting CD's To YADB

MJ9 Always Sends The Artist Name To YADB As The Album Name.

I Have Submited "Natalie Cole - Ask A Woman Who Knows"

Like 6 Times In The Past Month And YADB MJ9 Still Does Not Get It Correctly.

This Is Entering Bad Data To The YADB

I Have 616 Songs With No Cover Art.

All 616 Songs Are On The Billboard To 40

I Would Think They Should Have Some Sort Cover Art

There Is No Way To Scan And Then Submit Cover Art To J River

What Be Up With That?

Agree with King Sparta about the submission of cover art thing.  And the range of cover art in MJ9 seems to be less i.e. files I could get cover art for b4 I now don't seem to be able to??

The fact that this version is gonna be more visual centric maybe this is something that really needs to be addressed.  Could it be possible to store cover art at YADB along with the data, or have some area that it could be submitted to and tagged with meta data so that people can dl the images from YADB at the same time as ripping/tagging their cds?

I think my biggest thing at the moment is that the whole program still seems like an audio program with image features tagged on but Im guessing this will improve as time moves on.  Looking forward to the new play engine.  Some of my images do seem to work at the moment. JPGs seem to play okay but bitmaps crash the program...

KingSparta...

Have you noticed that all 11 posts in this thread have the same number of 5311 on them?

This is exactly the same problem I was having a few days ago.  Seems to be a bug in the new forum.

I cleared it (temporarly, I think) by loging out & loging back in.  This seems to do a reset but I suspect that the problem is still there.

Confirmation of memory leak when analyzing audio.  my computer slowed to a crawl then came up with a "You are low on Virtual Memory warning"  I have 384MB of static ram.  It eats CPU Time as well.  And tagging is still very slow... even for a single file.

Just a question....How does MJ decide if an album is incomplete in the drop down for single/multiple artists (complete/incomplete)?  Only some of the albums in there it says are incomplete are actually complete??  Does it run them against some sort of guide??

Cheers

Just noticed something new and I LIKE!!  If this has been mentioned b4 etc...  But MJ no longer restarts the playing track when changing tags.  This is great.  Is this down to the new playing engine?

Hi MachineHead;

Yeh, I know what you are talking about, but this is definitely a bug in the forum program.

Last week every new post I made had the same exact number on them until I logged out & logged back in, then they continued by adding one number to each now posts as it should.

Look at KingSparta's posts in this thread... they all have 5311 on them... not the way it should be.

I would call that a BUG...  >:(

Look at mine.. each one has a new number one higher then the last posts like it should be.

Hi Guys!

I have a problem playing videos and viewing images (simple mpgs and jpgs, that are with other players no problem)

I always get the same c++ runtime error as KingSpata in his screenshot under this topic, too.

My data:

Media Jukebox  9.0.64
Install Path: E:\Programme\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1307 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 261 MB, Free - 75 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0 Service Pack 3 (Build 2195)

Internet Explorer: 5.50.4807.2300
ComCtl32.dll: 5.50.4807.2300
Shlwapi.dll: 5.50.4807.2300
Shell32.dll: 5.00.3502.5436
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

First I had MJ 8, the I upgraded to MJ 9 b63. I read that the new 64 were out and made a mistake: I used the build-in update function.
That installed MJ 8 over MJ 9. So I got problems with a "too new" libary ( a libary, that was changed from MJ 8 to MJ 9 format).
"O.K." I thought "Let's get rid both f*-up installations and make a fresh start."
I uninstalled MJ 8 (what worked) and then MJ 9, what didn't work properly: I still had the icons in the start menu, I still had the uninstall-entry in the software-menu and a programmdir on my HD.
"No problem" I thought and wanted to do it by hand:
I deleted the J River dir and i think also the dir in he shared-folder. I deleted all icons, and with jv16-powertools (the new 'RegCleaner') all 'J River'-RegistryEntrys and manually the useless uninstall-mark in the software-menu. I additionally cleaned up my registry with two tools and installed build64.

To my sadness it still don't work with movies and images. Perhaps the installation I broke and the runtime-error are two different things?

Nope they are the same thing.  This version currently has problems with video and images (If you read page 1 of the thread it has been reported).  The JRiver guys are currently developing a new playback engine and the fallout at the moment is that images and videos dont work.

Okay coupla things.  Finally got the image slideshow to work once I understood what JimH was meaning  :-[  For those others like me who were unsure you need to go to Tools/Options/General and in the Behavior box set Jump on Play to Playing Now (always).  This will stop it trying to run in full screen which is currently causing a crash (Meaning that Hairstyle will not work :()

2nd thing - BUG:  Don't think this has been mentioned If you add images to playing now and then music when you try to click on the Indivdual items it acts as if the pics aren't there and treats them as if they were the music files in playing order.  Hope this makes sense.  As an example I sent 4 pics to playing now and an album so the files where in the playing now window like so

IMG 1, IMG 2, IMG 3, IMG 4
MP3 1, MP3 2, MP3 3, MP3 4
etc...

when I clicked on IMG 1 it loaded up MP3 1 to play when I double clicked MP3 1 it loaded up MP3 5 etc as if the images were being ignored but this wasn't what was displayed....

This can be reproduced but has to be done in a specific order otherwise it crashes the program.

1.  Right click an image album and click add to playing now.  The album immediately starts playing as a slideshow.
2. Right click an audio album and click add to playing now.  The tracks are added to the bottom of the files window after the images. The slide show stops but according to the transport it is still playing.
3.  Now double click the first image file in the file list.  It starts playing the first audio track.
4.  Right click the image - it shows the image menu.  SO MC still knows it is an image but for some reason when you double click it it thinks it is an audio file...

This is all done with the list view set to show indivdual cover art for each file.

Adam

UPDATE:  If you click one of the files lower down the list e.g. beyond the length of the album it brings up the please select files to play dialog and hangs the soundcard which makes a horrid noise...

UPDATE 2: Sorry this is starting to turn into a thesis :)
If you toggle the list view to the next item (file list) the images are not in the list so obviously MC is not updating the screen when an audio album is added.  DOes this mean you cannot set up an image album and then set the music you want behind it??

UPDATE 3: (Shoot me okay??)  If you set the image album playing first then click play for the audio album (rather than Add to Playing Now) the slideshow carries on and the audio album starts playing.  This is what I would have expected, however if you use add to playing now with the audio album it displays the above behaviour.  If you then try to add a new image playlist however it crashes the program.

Hope this helps in some way ;D

What complex connections.  :)

Another little bug, I think not mentioned up to now:

Every visualization and movie (movie: before i got problems), that is windowed, doesn't show the pause-button in the window.
Actually you can pause it, but the play-triangle don't switch to the pause-lines.

Problems fixed with 9.0.65 (ones I reported, anyway)...

  • The "Random" audio smartlists aren't working.  "one audio cd..."  and "one hour..." are both empty and "one data cd..." always returns 1 track. Fixed

    • If you click on "Random - One audio CD worth" you get the list.  If you then right click on "Random - ..." and send to the cd burner, the list get's re-calculated before the send so you don't get what was in the window originally. Fixed

    New Problems...

    • The "Random" lists are all sorted by the sort order from Tree and View Settings which in my case is artist, album and track #.  Not very random.  You can send them to playing now or a device and rearrange them, but that's not very convenient.

    • For data CDs the directory structure is literally written as "ARTIST\ALBUM" instead of the actual artist and album names.

Build 65 ----

FIXED:  BPM View Scheme

BROKE & WEIRD:  DECADE View Scheme --- Now it includes All years in their proper category, but the UNASSIGNED category includes Year 2000, 2001, & 2002 (anything 2000 & UP) AND it includes all Years exactly on the decade change (1940, 1950, 1960, etc) ....

Still having all sorts of crashes from updating Multiple File tags at the same time (MP3s)
-----UPDATE----- MJ Crashes on certain files when it tries to tag them ... Ive got the files here .. they play fine ... WHO WANTS A COPY ?

(Just extra info ... I know its a *messed up* tag ... but I would like to make sure there is a work-around in the tagging engine of MJ ... Im noticing extra fields in a lot of my P2P files .. This file has a user-defined field and something unrecognized by Dr. Tag called NCON?  Is there a way for MJ to strip off Junk/Unused tag elements ? )

Confirmed Fix: Changing to full screen no longer causes an error which means Hairstyle now works too!!

Unfixed: Still no scroll bars in the playing Now window for track info templates.

Still can't add an audio playlist to playing now without getting strange results as above... but I like double clicking an audio album and going full screen slideshow with the audio still playing...

And I still can't make a view scheme using my custom field in images.  The custom field is a sub album for images.  If I set the view scheme like so Album>Sub Album>Name each sub album shows all files regardless of their sub album, if i reverse it tho (just for testing as this wouldn't be much use :) )and have Album>Name>Sub Album clicking on each file shows their respective sub album...  Anyone know how I can get the first way to work i.e. each sub album only shows the files contained within it??

Cheers

Adam

P.S. The app is getting really good now especially now that full screen is working again.  Thanks Guys!!

I'm wondering if any of you guys have experienced some of the same behavior I'm about to describe. Something's wonky with my PC and I'm trying to pinpoint what's causing it.

First of all, my system was running perfectly. Then I installed .65 and the thing started freezing. I say that only because MJ was literally the ONLY things that changed before this started. But it wasn't freezing completely. It would freeze for a while and then it would be ok. this would happen while playing games, or just using the PC for other things. It even happened after a fresh reboot that never had MJ running. I didn't believe that MJ could be the cause of this (still don't - but who knows?). I finally did a system restore and restored it to a point before I installed .65, (MJ's about screen reports .64 now - strange because I didn't think that a system restore would affect an application that way) and everything's good again. So for the mean time, I'm staying away from 65. Like I said, I don't really believe MJ is to blame, but it can't hurt to see if anybody else is having the same problem.

I'm running XP SP1, btw.

Actually, now I'm beginning to think it's this latest Norton Antivirus update. After the system restore, my system was running perfectly again. I didn't update MJ, but I noticed NAV doing an automatic update and following that, things started acting up again.

Grrr...I hate AV software.  I don't actually run any at the moment.  I would rather reinstall Windows than have Norton AV on my system ;D

Matt, I sent you a PM with the location of some files .... Im getting lockups on file that has a fairly large ID3V2 tag in it (most have bmp cover art ... some have a proprietary tag ... ) ..

But, anything with a HUGE amount of tags locks up MJ ..
