Cannot convert WAV file to MP3
« on: December 22, 2002, 05:38:57 pm »

I have no luck in converting wav files to MP3 format. The mp3 files are produced but they just contain noise. I am using Windows 2000.  Any suggestion?

Are you within the trial period?

Did you download the MP3 encoder plug-in?

Try a different bit rate.  128, for example.

Can't rip - get the message

Cannot create plug-in "MP3 Encoder". Error 80040154

Tried other encoders and none work. :(

Try downloading the plugins again. The error message you are getting means that the encoders weren't "registered" which normally happens when they are installed.

After doing some experiments, I now can convert CD music to mp3. But the problem is converting speech files. Everytime I tried to convert WAV files which I got from my digital voice recorder, I only get noise in the output file. It is like play your tape recording at a much accelerated speed.

I then tried converting the WAV files in Windows system (\WINNT\media), the result was recognizable sounds but again at accelerated speed. Is this a problem with the input content which confused the encoder?

Has anyone successfully converted human speech to mp3 file?

Do the wave files Ply In MJ?

Last I Knew MJ did not Play Compressed WAV files.

Also The Lame Encoder (When I Tested It Over A Year Ago) I found out had a problem Encoding In Mono

The problem with your voice files (as *.wav's) is any of the following...

They are not 16 bit files
They were not sampled @ 44.1 kHz (or better)
They are 1 channel mono (dual channel mono should work)

Music encoders expect certain minimums as listed above. There may be command line switches for the external encoders (ie: LAME.exe for mp3's) that will allow encoding your files...but I have no idea what they would be. You could overlay the speech over some soft background music after which it should encode correctly.

10-27

edit > There are a million ways to make a 1 channel mono into 2 channel mono (digitally w/ wave editors) but the quickest way is....if the recorder has a line out jack (most likely mono), then you could get a cable that has a mono end (for the recorder) and a stereo end (for the line-in port of your soundcard). This will make it dual mono input. Then you can use MJ's Record Sound function which will make an encodeable wave file.

Steve,

You are right. My voice files are 16 bit, 8KHz frequency, and one channel mono. I guess MP3 will not handle them properly.

By coincidence, I was wrestling with a similar problem earlier today. Try burning the WAV files onto an audio CD. I used Easy CD Creator. Once they were on a CD, I was able to convert them from the CD to MP3. Good luck!

You could also try the program mono2stereo available from this page:
