Hi

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and would like Media Server to load as a service so that a user does not have to login before the client can connect, can anyone advise on a good way to do this?

There are some free\shareware utilities available that will allow you to do this.

Unfortunately my sleep-deprived mind can't remember the names of any of them.

There are a couple of utilities that might help you:

FireDaemon has a free light version and a more robust paid version.

NTLauncher Service is free but doesn't appear to be updated anymore.

This is a good candidate for the FAQ thread, IMO. This question comes up regularly, and the nature of it makes it slightly harder to find with the forum search tool - look for "service" and posts that include system info get listed (Service Pack X).

AtYourService is a very good shareware utility that will let you run Win32 apps as services, including Media Server (which I've used it for in the past).
