Can't install
« on: October 11, 2003, 10:36:24 am »

I just downloaded MC9 and the install wizard starts, but then disappears and nothing else happens.  I have XP-Pro, have uninstalled MMJB, have Ephpod installed.  I have tried downloading again, same thing happens, it just will not get past the initial install screen.  Do I have to uninstall Ephpod?  Any other ideas would be appreciated. ?

I havent heard of any conflicts with Ephpod. Thats an iPod thing, right? You might look on the iPod thread here.

Might be worth downloading again, in case your initial download was corrupt. Make sure you get the latest version from the JRiver website http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Some people recommend turning off other running programs, virus scanners etc when installing software. Ive never had a problem with this sort of thing though.

I tried stopping everything running, still stops after progress bar finishes - downloaded MC9 again, uninstalled EPhPod, still won't install.  Have installed other downloads recently with no problems. I was able to install on my laptop running XP Home, but that's not where I need it.

I also am having trouble installing MC9.   :'(
I have XP Home, and I've tried shutting down all the taskbar programs before installing.

My installation is dying before I get to the actual install wizard.  It's acting like theres a corrupted file, but I've downloaded multiple times with IE and Netscape and from two different places (9.1.274 and 9_1).  I get a window that pops up after I double click and the "Preparing to Install" window is almost complete that says, "ERROR: Errors encountered while performing the operation.  Look at the information window for more details."
I can't find the information window, and the "Preparing to Install" window just sits there at like 95% complete..

Help?

Hmmm, Im pretty much out of ideas at the first hurdle then.

If the same download works in Home but not Pro theres obviously something in your Pro machine it doesnt like. If youre game it might be worth uninstalling Ephpod. Although if you are not even getting as far as the license acceptance dialog somehow Id be suprised if this was it. Im pretty sure there are no general problems with Pro, so it should work. Although it wont help me as Im the type of person who doesnt even know how to get the bonnet open on his car, perhaps some system info might help out here: processor, memory, sound card details etc.

Have you successfully installed previous versions on the Pro machine? Maybe an old expired trial version causing problems (although there should be some sort of message)? Any registry entries?

Guess I'm not the only one. Win XP Home Edition, same thing. Something with the installer is borked.

XP Pro here too and everything fine.  I've had this a few times and everytime it's been a bad download.  Download it again.

Six times is enough. Installer is at fault. Nothing new installed. Same ol', same ol'. Just doesn't want to go this time.

XP Home works here.  I don't think the problem is Pro vs. Home.  Nothing has changed in the install.

Try IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files and "delete files".

.274 installer is not working here. Temp files have been deleted, several times.

Just to check I re-installed .273. Works as it should.

I just downloaded MC9 and the install wizard starts, but then disappears and nothing else happens.

I have had this problem MANY times with MJ8 and MC9, on several Windows systems (including Win2K, WinXP Home, and WinXP Pro).  Every time I reported it, people thought I was nuts.

Strangely, as far as MC 9.1 goes, the problem only happened to me with one particular install version (as far as I can remember, anyway).  All the others have worked fine for me.  I have never figured out what the problem was.

But in any event, the workaround--in my case at least--was to run setup, and after it mysteriously quit on me, to then navigate to the temp directory in an Explorer window.  From there, run the setup file (InstallWizard.exe) manually.

The problem with the setup package (again, in my case at least) is that the packager extracts the files, but then for some bizarre reason fails to find or launch the file it needs to launch (InstallWizard.exe).  It has nothing to do with having "too many programs running" at the time, or anything else like that.

Got it to install after changing the way I normally do it.

Cleaned the cache from both browsers, again, and rebooted.

Used IE this time and unchecked the box, 'Close this window after download completes.' Launched it from there and then it installed.

Odd. ?

I wouldn't think that a reboot would be necessary after clearing the cache, but then again...

Anyone else having problems care to try this method and see if it works?

I tried that when I had the problem--it didn't help.  I also tried saving the file to a specific directory and running it from there (as opposed to running it from MSIE)--still no luck.  I tried a slew of other things as well, and even ran Sysinternals Filemon and Regmon to try to diagnose the issue.

The problem on my systems had nothing to do with MSIE, and I really doubt it did on yours, either.  My guess is that this flaky problem disappeared for some other reason (other than clearing the cache), but we don't know what that is.  As I said before, the problem came and went on my system as well.

It helps to realize that the EXE you download is just a self-extracting archive.  The problem occurs when the archive extracts the contents but then doesn't launch the actual installer.

Is it possible to get a copy of MC9 with a different install process?

I've tried using IE, Netscape, and an Internet Download manager, and have downloaded both the "last known stable" 9_1 and the latest 9.1.274 (so two separate files).  I've tried it installing in SAFE mode, and normal mode on BOTH Windows 98SE and Windows XP Home.

I'm quite frustrated. ?  I have tried clearing IE's temp files (including offline files), and tried emptying the TEMP directory in the .../Local Settings/Temp, neither of which helps.  I still can't get the actual Install Wizard to launch.  I've tried searching for the actual wizard executable, but I must not be typing in the exact filename, because I can't find it.  Can someone give me an alternative way to install MC9, or at least some more information about where the uncompressed install directory (and Wizard exec.) lives? ::)

Thanx,
J.

If you know where your temp directory is, look there for the "InstallWizard.exe" file.  If you don't know where the temp directory is, you can check your Windows environment variables--but by default, the temp directory is C:\Windows\Temp.

Or, simply extract the install file to a known temp directory.  You can do this using the shell extension of any (good) archive utility, like WinZip.  Or, instead of using the shell extension of your archive utility, simply rename the install file from having an EXE extension to a ZIP extension, then open it and extract it as you would any other ZIP file.  Make sure you preserve the ZIP folder structure when you extract the contents.  Then, just run InstallWizard.exe manually.

I guess I don't seem so "nuts" anymore!  At least where this old problem is concerned...

We think a crash-type bug was introduced in the last build of the installer.

Please try the next build when it is available and let us know if it's fixed.

Thanks!

Tried it again with 9.1.277.  No Joy.  I'm now using a download manager for the restart ability.  I'm connected to the Internet with Cable Modem.

I've even tried it using SmartFTP direct from the ftp site (anonymous login).

I've tried opening it in Winzip 8.1, in order to manually unzip it, but it says the file isn't a Winzip or it's corrupted, and asks if I then want to run the supposedly corrupt EXE.

Same error during the unzip process.  Again.  And Again.

Anybody have any new ideas other than reinstalling WinXP home?  I have a brand new computer (2 months old), so I'd be REALLY disappointed with Microsoft if XP is as quirky as 95/98.

Help. I'd really love using this neato Media Center program that I bought.   ;)

I recently uninstalled WinZip for good, so I can't verify one way or the other if it works for this.  However, I just downloaded MC 9.1.277 and opened the EXE file in UltimateZip, with no problem.

Try renaming the file so that it has a ZIP extension, and then opening and extracting it normally.  If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss as to explain why--unless WinZip sucks more than I thought it did.

Again, UltimateZip worked fine for me to open MediaCenter91277.exe; both with the shell extension and the file name as is, and also after renaming the file to MediaCenter91277.exe.zip.

Alright!~!!
I found the "InstallWizard.exe" file this time, and was able to run it manually by leaving the XP unzip process window open after I clicked "OK" on the ERROR popup window.  It was in ./Local Settings/Temp/RarSFX0/.

I had a bunch of error windows during the plugin install section.  I captured all the error windows in a Word Document (Alt-PrntScreen) of each error window.  If anyone really cares, I'll email them the document.  It looks like the install program is looking in the ./Local Settings/Temp/RarSFX0/Support directory and the MJR files point to respective ZIP files.  When I checked the directory, I found a bunch of MJR files, but NO ZIP's.  Here's a list of the files the installer was expecting (in order):

dsp_mj.zip, enc_ape.zip, enc_external.zip, enc_mp3.zip, enc_ogg.zip, enc_wma.zip, hh_portable.zip, in_ape.zip, in_cda.zip, in_mp3.zip, in_mpc.zip, in_ogg.zip, in_wav.zip, in_wma.zip, out_MJ.zip

I was able to install plugins from the webpage.  Follow on question, does the Encoder plugin cover both the "in" and the "out" ZIP files that the installer was looking for, or do I have only a partially functional MC9?

At least I have it installed now!!  Yea!
Hope this info helps troubleshoot the installer,
J.

I had problems with today's build as well.

The previous 50 or so installs were OK.

Solved it by logging off / and back on to Windows .
