cannot burn audio CD
« on: October 26, 2003, 02:07:35 pm »

Suddenly I find I cannot burn an audio CD!
When I do and place it into a CD Player it responds with "No Disc".
When I explore the CD in my PC, I see the 12 files on teh CD, but Windows reports they are CDA files but all are only 44kb in size, and are shown as Duration: 0:00.
I have tried MC9.1, Nero, Plextools,  I have uninstalled these other programs and then later reinstalled them with no change. I have uninstalled the CDRW drive and allowed windows to reinstall it, stil with no better results.
It has got to be somethng I am overlooking.
I can burn data discs sucessfully however.   ?

Did you switch brands of disks?  The color of the disk can make a difference to some non-PC players.

Take a look at this page (especially the part about "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device"):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q241/2/44.ASP&NoWebContent=1

However, if they won't play in *any* CD player (not just the computer), there would seem to be either a hardware problem with the CD burner or a media problem.

BTW the 44kb "cda" files are normal. All audio disks display these little files for audio disks.

A hardware problem? Interesting . . .  worked in the past . . .
and since it will burn data discs, I find this curious.

HOWEVER; I downloaded 'Burn At Once' and made another attempt, which returned this error log:

SPTILOCK:0,1,0: PLEXTOR CD-R   PX-W4012A   Rev: 1.05

Starting write at speed 40...
Turning BURN-Proof on
Executing power calibration...
Power calibration successful.
?: I/O error.  : scsi sendcmd: retryable error
CDB:  2A 00 FF FF FF 6A 00 00 1A 00
status: 0x0 (GOOD STATUS)
cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 180s
ERROR: Write data failed.
ERROR: Writing failed.

Anyone have a clue here?
Only thing that I find odd . . .  this is an ATAPI CDr/w drive and something says SCSI, which makes no sense to me.  I also cannot find a way to change this ?

Well, hardware can go bad over time. It is strange that data CD's still work, but since a data CD has much more error checking/correcting built in compared to audio CD's, it's possible that they're still able to be read whereas audio CD's fail. The writing laser could have weakened or be fluctuating or the optical system might be dirty.
I take it that nothing has changed in the CD drive configuration (different cabling, master/slave setting, new drive added, etc.).

Things to try:
1. check your task list for programs that may be accessing the CD drive and disable them.
2. try a different brand and color of media (even though yours have worked in the past)
3. check for upgraded firmware for the drive
4. check for whether the drive is using DMA or PIO and try the opposite setting from what it's currently using (device manager - IDE settings). DMA is almost always the preferred setting.
5. try a couple different (slower) writing speeds, maybe the problem only occurs at the highest speed.
6. [last resort] You could try cleaning the drive, check out "How do I clean my CD recorder?" at this link:
http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq03.html#S3-30

Good luck!

I tried the MS Autofix Wizard mentioned in this thread
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=16074

Unfortunately I got this error:

AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]

    Result [AutoStart Setting]: Check Skipped
Result [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]: Problems
    >> Repair << [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]
Step: Starting the Shell Hardware Detection service.
Result: The wizard ran into problems while trying to start the Shell Hardware Detection service.

>> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None

Check out the section "Enable the Shell Hardware Detection Service" at this link:

http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-748931857.shtml

Not sure if this has anything to do with your burning problems however.

Check the "Processes" tab in windows task manager and see if "imapi.exe" is running.

OK I checked and imapi.exe is NOT present.
Is this good or bad??

Lisa, could you save yourself a lot of time by borrowing a CD-RW drive off a mate?  That would be the easy way to see if you have a drive problem.  They do break.

That is a though JLee.
I guess I can swap one with my girlfrien's PC and see whether it is the PC or the drive . . . .  I will have to try that over the weekend.
