Considering purchase,?'s on update and ID3 tags
« on: November 25, 2003, 05:09:16 am »

I have been using MusicMatch Jukebox for several years.  Been a great program but I am finding I need a few more features.

1. What CD-Roms Drives does Media Center support for writing MP3 disk in correct format so the MP3 cd will display ID3 tags on a cd player?  I am using a Sony CRX220E1 and MusicMatch does not support that drive for CD-Text.  I also assume since my MP3 tags do not show up it does not support ID3 tags.

2. Many car audio cd players only support ID3V1 tags.  Does Media Center support both V1 and V2 tags?  Can both tags version be maintained and is there a way I can copy all the V2 tags to V1 so my tags appear on the car stereo display?

3. For some reason I though Music Match and Media Center were somehow connected.  Is there an upgrade from MMJ to Media Center?

4. If you have any experience with MMJ 8.0 will Media Center do everything MMJ8 does?

5. Are there any bulk editing tools for filenames, ID tags etc. in Media Center?

6. Can Media Center import my MMJ library?

Thanks for the time...

You're question is kind of confusing to me as there is a difference in CD-Text and ID3 tags. CD-Text is for audio CDs only, as far as I know.  Media Center (MC) supports a huge range of drives, so I'm sure it will support your Sony. It supported my Lite-On 52246S from day one, and from what I've read the Sony CRX220E1 is a rebadged Lite-On 42246S.

When you say your ID tags aren't showing up, where exactly are they not showing up? Is it in Windows? In a car/portable MP3 player? If it's in Windows, when you view a CD with MP3s on them, for some reason you have to define which columns to view. Personally, I think that's a flaw in Windows.

Both versions of the ID3 tags. There is no need to copy any ID3 tag info from one version to the next, at least that's been the case in my car's MP3 player (Pioneer DEH-5500MP). I just burn a disc of MP3s from within MC, and take it to the car. No need to update any ID tags as MC will do that for you when you rip 'em.

As far as I know, the only connection between MC and MMJ is that they both play media files.

I do, and yes it does, and more! I don't want to sound like a salesman, but to me MMJ was big, bloated, crashed often, and didn't do all of the things that I wanted. When I went to MC (I started on version 8 ) I was blown away by it's library and ID3 tagging abilities. Then I went to version 9.1, and for me, there's no other program worth looking at that has MCs features and abilities.

5. Are there any bulk editing tools for filenames, ID tags etc. in Media Center?

Sure is. It's by far the easiest way to update ID tags that I've found.

6. Can Media Center import my MMJ library?

Not sure about that one as I just had MC import all my files from scratch on day one. If you're talking about custom playlists, then all you would have to do is save your MMH custom playlist as a M3U file, and let MC import it.

What you really need to do is download MC. It comes fully fuctional for 30 days and if you don't like it, you can uninstall it and continue your search for the ultimate media player. But I don't think you'll have to do that.  ;D

Try it, and let us know what you think!

MC can't import MusicMatch libraries.  We've looked at it and the library files are encrypted.

OK, Thanks all.  I will try the 30 day trial.  I suspect I will find what I am looking for.  As far as the IDV tags not showing up;

I burn a MP3 cd with tracks I know have ID3V1 tags.  When inserted into the cars stereo units at the retail stores I do not see artist, track name tags etc.  All I get is the filename that is stored on the CD.  If I burned an audio CD on units that support cd text the head unit says no-text.  I supect that to be a flaw with MuscMatch.

it depends on the car player

I have two car MP3 players (wife's car and my car) both have options to display the artist, the title or the file name etc... i think the default is the file name on some.
