Power User privileges
« on: December 08, 2003, 03:30:42 am »

I checked several threads and got contradictory info. Is it or is it not possible to install the program on an XP Pro box as an administrator and then have ALL the non-administrator accounts play music, even the limited accounts.
In a family situation it is imperative that this is possible. I do not want to grant my children admin/power user privileges only to be able to play music. Other programs can do this – why should I use Media Center then? Media Jukebox played my music just fine - for me - not for my family.  >:(
I upgraded (registered user) from MJ8 to MC9 yesterday and I get a “you need power user rights” message” if I try to run MC from a limited account. Is this because I upgraded from MJ8, or is this normal?  >:(
The impression I have now is that this program is not family-friendly. Correct me if I'm wrong, otherwise I'll have to shop elsewhere.

"Media Center cannot be run under windows xp limited user accounts" is the answer I'm afraid.

I have requested that this be looked into as a possibility for version 10, but if my understanding is correct, from a coding point of view, it's a massive undertaking, requiring the program to be practically re-written from scratch. If that is correct, I don't think we can expect to see this happen in the next few days.

I'd hate to see you leave MC behind because of this. If you have a logical mind and are not afraid of the system registry, it is possible to make this work by editing the security settings on the jriver registry keys. It does work, you just need to understand that a)it's most definately not supported, and b)it's undertaken entirely at you're own risk. c)you're little cherubs will be able to make changes to your library and file tags if you use the FAT32 filesystem. If using ntfs, you can again set permissions to deny this.

See this thread...

If MC is not that important to you to be jumping through these hoops, then for the time being, I guess you'll be shopping elsewhere.

(I hate not being able to give the answer someone really wants)

Marko,
I guess I didn't dig deep enough through the forum: thanks for the link! I'll give it a go.
I tried enough 'media centers' to know that I should stick with this one if possible - I really think it's the best.
Thanks!
If ever you need someone to translate the interface to Dutch ...

BTW: this answer was all I really wanted :)
