What Is the Action Window?
« on: December 16, 2003, 05:31:18 pm »

I'm trying to understand the paradigm of the Action Window.  I used to think it was a place for displaying information...  but the "Build Playlists" broke that.  So does the "Camera" action:  it seems to be nothing more than a shortcut to the Acquire Images GUI.

Is this still a work in progress, or am I missing the paradigm altogether?

The paradigm is to proactively synergize actions and information :P

Or maybe it's just a place to "do stuff" and "look at stuff."

Something about self-empowerment buzzwords from the 7-Habits books makes me laugh.

This site is good for a few laughs: http://www.despair.com/

Matt,

OK...  so there is no paradigm - it's kind of a free-form, make-love-not-war feature.

Might I suggest, though, that "camera" and "build playlist" are not like the others...  it's like Sesame Street:  "which one of these is not like the others? which one of these does not belong?"  Did I get it right?

Also, I'd suggest that the AW "panes" behavior better...  they're a little naughty - switching places and such.  Did you like my suggestions from this thread:  http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=17500;start=msg120358#msg120358?

Scott,
We are still tinkering with it, but the Action Window is mainly for "actions" as opposed to library content.  We won't completely stick to that, but the libary will be accessed from the tree, not from the action window.

We appreciate it if you don't expect us to be rigidly logical.  It spoils the fun (for us, at least).

At AT&T they forced those 7 Habits down our throats, we called them "The Seven Deadly Sins".

Then the Action Window is the same as a toolbar?

At least for the two items "build playlist" and "camera"...  so I've wondered why have them in the Action Window when they can be put on a toolbar.

All other items work really well in the Action Window - because they give you a view not available anywhere else - or they give you a drop zone to do things (like the "Burn CD" or "Handheld".)
