MC 9: What's Wrong
« on: December 22, 2003, 12:45:34 am »

Here are some of the more serious outstanding problems with MC  9:

1) System lockup when running visualizations (2-D).  This makes visualization totally unusable.

2) Visualization studio completely unusable on WinMe.  The right-hand pane is blank and clicking on the items in the left-hand pane changes nothing.

3) Crashes occasionally when starting playback: "MJ caused error in PLAYBACKENG.DLL..."

4) If you let MC 9 eject after ripping, then it won't recognize a new disk you insert unless you eject the new one and re-insert it.  Then sometimes it will crash.

5) If you eject a disk that's playing, instead of just stopping play (like MS Media Player does) you get a YES/NO/CANCEL dialog box where the NO choice does nothing useful, the YES choice gets you back to where you started and the CANCEL allows you to go on to something else.

The problems you describe do not happen on my system and I suspect that it is not all down to MC.  My advice is to give your system a health check by:

* Run Windows update
* Update to the latest BIOS version.
* Check for driver updates to Graphics card & sound card.
* Check for firmware updates to your CD drive.
* Run a benchmarking program like 3D Mark 2001 (if you have DirectX8) or 3D mark 2003 (if you have DirectX9).  Run it continuously for several hours.  If it locks up then you have a system problem (e.g. graphics, memory, CPU etc.)

I'm afraid I must agree with JLee, I have NOT experienced these problems either. (Although I moved away from WinME as fast as I could.)

Perhaps if you were to seek assistance in tracking down the cause of these issues you may find they are able to be resolved.

MC9.1 is not 100% bulletproof, but it is stable and functional.

OK
I learned the hard way something :

Many times , when MC is not working , it is because there is a problem in your computer.
I know it is hard to accept -- it was hard for me - but it is true

And my number one suspect in this case would be WinME.

From my very sorry experience ,i can tell you that MC is not the problem.
And that MC is in fact reveling the problems your system has.
My MJ8 end of beta trial was a nightmare.

Try this : update your ASPI. It is a PITA , so use this program:
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm

If you have Windows Media Player 7 or 9 , REMOVE IT and go back to player 6.  There is a small program to do it.  Search for 'removing WMP from W-ME' on google.

I had Me for years ,and it was working fine and i really liked it.
After quite a lot of tweaks ,i have to say.

Been there.  Done that.

I'll give the graphics shakeout a try anyway.

Lame.  Either MC 9 supports WinMe systems or the system requirements given on the Web site are misleading.

Sounds intriguing.  Thanks for your suggestions.

However, I have NEVER liked WinMe, but I'm anything but eager to shell out $100 to MS for functionality I've already paid them for.  The problem should sound familiar.

I had similar proplems with winMe and MC and some other programs as well. As soon as I moved on to w2k 99% of the problems, freezes, and complete shutdowns dissapeared. My computer has not misbehaved once since I got rid of winMe. and stating so with many others concurrung IS NOT LAME. It's a general concensus.

MC supports WinMe as much as any other app can support a much less than perfect windows program. MC works fine with 98, 2k & XP.

Bite the bullet, (I'm sorry ol' Billy G. stuck you with a bill of goods like he did so many others here in this forum) check with your friends, maybe one of them has moved up to XP and will sell you their copy of win2k. I promise, you won't regret it and you'll be able to enjoy MC to it's full potential.

Good Luck and best wishes :)

Hey, even Microsoft had a hard time writing compatible software for WinME. Why do you think it's so unstable? Ask anybody who works with computers everyday what they think of WinME. Most everybody I know would recommend going back to 98SE.

My W98SE with IE6 has always been odd with CD recognition, with and without MC.
