Media Center 10.0.22 beta available
« on: December 19, 2003, 05:20:40 pm »

Media Center 10.0.22 beta is available.

This is a beta.  Avoid this if problems, changes, or crashes will upset you.  Do NOT try this if you aren't prepared for trouble.

The latest known stable version of 9.1 is here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Please check the license and price thread before you download:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=17336

The latest beta of 10 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter10022.exe

10.0.22 (12/19/03)

1. Fixed: Media Center could report an error after finshing a track, even if there was no error.

10.0.21 (12/19/03)

1. Changed: Rearranged the "burning complete" dialog.
2. Fixed: Hairstyle was not using the same view schemes as MEGA-ME.

7. Fixed: Media Mode toolbar was allowing customization.
8. Changed: Removed playlist view mode -- use a smartlist for advanced view filtering.
9. Changed: Bottom toolbar empty by default. (existing customization not lost)
10. Changed: CD drives not shown in 'My Computer' view since they're above 'My Computer.'
11. Changed: Display window's top bar would unnecessarily show up when locking the tree left.
12. Fixed: JRImage rounding error that could cause pixel bleeding under intense zoom.
13. Changed: Removed 'My Computer' view mode option at bottom. (too easy to take forever in recursive mode)
14. Changed: 'My Computer' views honor Media Type mode.
15. Changed: Removed tree full of 'Auto-Smartlists' by default.
16. NEW: When creating a smartlist, you can select from a list of presets.

Feature request: Column view enhancement
« Reply #1 on: December 19, 2003, 05:51:23 pm »

I'd like to humbly request two changes / enhancements to column views:

1) Rename "views" within a column context to "Column views" to avoid confusion with View schemes.  Or rename both.  Hmm.  Not sure what to suggest on this one.

2) Enable a way to attach a way to name and save Column views, so these same views can be selectively applied to other playlists (e.g., my four jazz-oriented playlists can have different column views than my classical playlists).

It's a good idea.  Moving all view properties to a single dialog might clean things up. (sorting, columns, etc.)  And it'll work nice for both audio and other media types ;)

1) Media Modes don't seem to affect Media Library at all, they just change the Action Window configuration, but don't select the Audio /Image / Video part of Media Library.

2) Full screen mode for slide shows does not work any longer

3) View Schemes in Hairstyle seem to be rather confusing. I definitely feel that Hairstyle should be configured independently of Mega-Me as the needs there a re probably simpler and more straightforward. Reflecting the panes structure probably doesn't come in very handy.

This may happen if you've deviated from the "Audio", "Images", and "Video" groups under Media Library.  In a coming build, MC will enforce this structure, so that Media Modes will always work properly.

Hi Matt

How have you been?

Hairstyle:

could you please

1. Clear boxes selected on an album when pressing play or enqueue.

2. Back in Jan or Feb or march , on playing a video, you would loop back to hairstyle at the end of the video.
Could you implement it again.

3.Where are you going with the 5 button thing?

Most remotes have Play, pause, stop, next, back, up, down , left, right and the one you prog. for menu (hairstyle)

Well nice to see ya again. (Or read ya)

Take care

My Fuji Camera stores its files  2 directories down: G:\DCM\100_FUJI. I guess it's not the only one.

MC doesn't find these files and so doesn't import them. It needs a way of selecting the base path for the search when using the Camera action.

A check list for the file types would also be good here.

Excellent one...!!

My camera uses:  F:\DCIM\100NIKON.  Though "F" drive is a relative thing... ;)

My Kodak 4300 is the same way.

But it doesnt bug me.

Since my images come from diff. sources

I would rather have an import "my way"

Instead of importing and then changing all the tags.

7. Fixed: Media Mode toolbar was allowing customization.

Yes, I tried it before and it had no value.,

But, how about making our selection "sticky" between uses of MC?

Minor idea:
Could you please have tooltips pop up for columns that are narrowed to where you can't see the column name?  It'd be easier than having to expand then contract them again. :)

Biggest Info Dialog EVER!!
« Reply #11 on: December 19, 2003, 10:32:07 pm »

Little (strange) thing: just moved many thousands of files from one server to another. Did a find and replace on the relevant fields in the MC database. On completion I was presented with a GIANT dialog box (ran off the bottom of my 1024x768 screen) with the title "Info" and the info balloon icon. Otherwise it was blank. No text. Hit enter and it disappeared. Update took fine.

!- Right-click on toolbar FAILS to bring up toolbar customization dialog.

2-'false' blank message after large tag changes/saves (as stated above by skidoo)

3- Need left/right scrollbar for tree pane

4- Where did the bottom bar in the file-view window go?
How do you now select 'no data files', 'recursive', etc??

I can't believe you would start version 10 while I was away. How rude.
Anyway, when I change output settings during playback, at the end of the currently playing song (or when you change song) MC exits, sometimes silently and sometimes with a crash.

Also, is there (or could there be) any way to "multi-select" media modes? I would like, for example, to have both audio and video, but not images. Is this possible, or could it be implemented?

Cheers,

Scott.

What exactly do you mean by "deviated from the "Audio", "Images", and "Video" groups under Media Library."? I have my most used view schemes at the root level of the Media Library. Does this mean that's no longer going to be possible?

TAGGING BUG:
MC doesn't handle hypenated artist names well.  I took a file already tagged with artist=e-type and track=Here I Go Again, and when I used the MC tagging tool to add album info, it renamed the artist "E" and then renamed the title "Type - Here I Go Again."  Oops! :O

TAGGING FEATURE REQUEST
I know that we can undo tagging, but I really prefer MusicMatch's way of handling this ("super-tagging").  It provides a default recommendation, but also offers several close or other probable matches and lets you decide which one you want for each track selected.  You can just hit ACCEPT and have it just use its selected defaults, or you can pick and choose which ones you like.

Hello there,

I've noticed that you cannot longer use the TAB key to abandon the quick search box and focus the panes. Instead it produces the ASCII character in the form of a box. Is that normal? I've noticed it since the first 10.0.x builds.

Thank you

Sorry, but the LOCATE Artist/Genre/etc...  utility isn't working either. Does anybody have this problem too?

P.D: In the last post i meant the ASCII character the TAB key is producing in the search box is a square shape.

Thank you.

Version 10.0.22 Hairspray mode comments:

1.  I've reported this for an earlier version 10 build but I'm still having the same problem. When viewing thumbnails of audio (root audio level) in hairspray, it takes forever for MC to display the thumnails. This works very quickly for video and images though. I don't have any art in my audio files though so MC apparently takes forever to realize this before it timesout. But while it's searching, I lose control over navigation and can't switch to list view (which is my only workaround for the moment).  Could you allow us to set a default Details vs. List view at the Audio/Image/Video/Playlist root levels? This would solve my problem since I would only like to see Images and Video in thumbnail view and Audio in details view.

This problem also exists when I view playlist in Hairstyle. When I enter Playlists in thumbnail view (Root level), my Video and Image related thumbnails display immediately, but MC stalls and eventually timeout when trying the view the Audio related playlists.

2.  A number of builds ago, I lost the ability to set up a view scheme with no columns. Could you add this capability back in?  This make it much easier to keep additional clutter out of Hairspray. At the main Audio, Image, Video levels, I used to have no columns defined and setup only View Schemes to display in Hairspray.  The way it works now, I'm forced to show at least one additional unnecesary item (the required column) in Hairspray.

3.  When I view Video, Images, Audio in full screen mode, when the file finishes, MC remains at a blank screen. Could you give us an option to have it jump back to Hairstyle mode (remembering the exact screen we were at) when the file is finished playing.  Conversely, could you add an option to automatically jump to full screen mode when playing a file. Preferably, we would be able to configure these options seperately for Audio, Video and Images.

4.  Hairstyle mode doesn't allow any other windows or application to obtain focus. This can be great feature to have under certain situations (parties, etc.) but ultimately prevents the viewing of other apps I need to access. Could you make this feature configurable in some way?

5. Cosmetic Suggestions: It would be great if Hairstyle would use the icon selected for each view scheme instead of just using the default asterek (*) to represent view schemes. Not critical, but would definitely improve the cosmetics a bit.  Also, the new overlays for selecting media files in Hairspray are a bit to large. They end up covering part of the thumnail caption when selected. Lastly, the color of the selection box (blue), doesn't have enough contrast to more obviously show the items that have been selected. Blue on a blue background doesn't work too well. Maybe a red or yellow checkbox?

Please don't take any of the above as anything more then offering suggestions to improve MC based on my usage. I love the product and just hope to contribute in some way to it's continued developent and improvement.

If you create a new list field type and then click on the field in the action window, MC crashes and when relaunched the field is no longer there. However, if I create the field, then close and re-launch MC, the field is not only there, but editable.

Perhaps there is something else going on with my system, but,
MC10 seems very slow in saving tags, even to a local (Not mapped) drive.  This is with a small database (small local library with NO lyrics or bios) even when only tagging a couple of files at a time.

Also because of the way it saves once you make a move to a new field . . .having clicked elsewhere removes focus somehow, which means you cannot click on the confirmation dialog until you first click on the windows toolbar.  And if it stalls your system enough during the save, MC leave partial menu boxes on the screne that will not give up focus when choosing another application.

I'm at a loss...

There used to be a way to tell MC to show you only the contents of a folder in the 'My Computer' tree, or the contents of all included folders.

This was really, really useful to me, because I could rip a bunch of albums to separate folders, then select the parent folder in MC and do audio analysis, tagging, etc. Then I would move the folders in Explorer (since MC still does not have a good way of moving multiple folders) and import them.

Now I have to queue up each folder individually for audio analysis, instead of doing an analysis on everything in the 'Rips' folder.

Very often I work with files that I don't want to import to the library - on an external hard drive for example, or exported files for DJing, so the loss of the ability to work on nested folders is a big deal for me.

I've now seen MC lose two things that mattered to me - the detachable action window and the ability to work on nested folders. It would be hard to go back to 9.1, since the improvements in Hairstyle, etc. are substantial, but I may have no choice.

Drop down tag for 'Artist' doesn't fill in with existing options... as opposed to other fields such as 'Album' and 'Genre' (both in AW and in-line editting).  I know the dropdown wouldn't make as much sense with 'Name', but it's handy with 'Artist' - eg. if I have two artist entries, Whitlam and Whitlams, and wanted to correct the first, it was simple to dropdown the list and select Whitlams for it... now one alway has to type to correct 'Artist' entries.

On the plus side I like the new (not sure how long it's been there) smartlist creation dialog, much easier for new people to see how the search field relates to it now - also, by having a dialog, it's easy to cancel a miskey now... whereas if I hit the F9 by mistake in earlier version, I had to click off the new smartlist then manually delete it, now I can just press Esc... maybe it would be good to have a similar dialog for normal Playlists, with just a text field asking for the name... that way one can cancel them easily too (I quite often forget which key is smartlist and which is normal, and have to delete the normal playlist).

I also like the new create view scheme dialog, a couple of improvements on it could be - when you right click a current view scheme and 'add view scheme', maybe it could select the same image as the view scheme you are creating from, and also fill 'view' details with the same column info as the that view scheme too (which the user could modify or dropdown a preset and start from scratch, I find that when I want to create a view scheme under another it probably has the same [or slightly modified] column/view pane layout as it's parent).

I also have the same problem as Quisp -

- though mine had plenty of text - all the files that failed - but I couldn't scroll through it, and was a little worried about getting rid of it at first, since I couldn't see what the buttons where, and what the effect of 'enter' would be (I assume it's just an OK button somewhere offscreen.)

Just noticed that when right-clicking in a smart-playlist, you get four entries at the bottom of the menu that are unselectable (Update Order, Remove Order, Shuffle, Remove Duplicates) - these are selectable in a normal playlist... do they apply to smart playlists and are broken? or do they not apply and should be removed? or only apply in special cases?

When editing the columns in a view scheme and applying grouping the changes do not survive a program restart.

Hi,
I'm using media center for years now and I don't understand your upgrade system.
The last "regular" version I was using was 9.1. I was interested to give a try a your beta 10.0.10 version on the beginning of last december. As it worked quite good, I decided to buy the upgrade license and paid 19.98$ on the 6th of december. No problems:I was registered in the MC menu with the 10.0.10 version.Yesterday,I downloaded the 10.0.22 beta and I'm not registered anymore, I should buy again an upgrade from 9 to 10 for 12.99$. So 19.98$ +12.99$ = 32.97$ isn't it a bit expensive?...

Stopping playback does not purge the previously playing song. IE: Start up a new song and the fadeout is still in effect going into the new song. This is  very annoying.

Not a bug, but not pretty:

When you select a file (with taggin mode turned off) at the bottom of each pane the "new ..." option is present. This shouldn't appear until tagging mode is turned on, I think.

And selecting the "Audio mode" of the media types bar doesnt do anything on my machine. All the view schemes are still there. However when selecting "image" or "video" in the media types bar, it works correctly and the tree is filtered to just show the relevant schemes.

I would also appreciate the ability to copy view schemes or save ones that i make as presets. :)

Goodnight,
Bri

For some reason I created a field called "Type" in the Library. It seems that MC has assumed that I mean't "File Type" and created a second field called "file type" in the Library. The problem is that I can't delete it. Even though it shows up as a user created field, it won't delete it because, I'm assuming, it thinks it is a system field at delete time due to the name.

Hi,

I think the search-bar should be in the position in which it was before, because when you now have a smartlist with many entries in the search-bar, the playback-bar (or how you call ii), could become VERY short.

Has the Search field been taken out of the tab order? I think that, regardless of the view (Playing Now, Media Library etc) pressing Tab enough times would get me to there. Ctrl+F, if pressed while in Playing Now, will switch me to Media Library before setting focus to the Search field, which is not what I want.

Is this the new behavior?

Hi,

I'm just trying to figure out if I have the BETA installed or not. I remember reading in the thread somewhere that the spalsh screen would show version 9 even if you had the beta. Has this been fixed and how can I tell what version I'm running.

Thanks

BUGS:

View schemes are forgetting their settings.

Created a few and they're forgetting the fact that I've set fields to group.

Also, inserting a CD into the drive or ejecting it is causing MC to crash.

Getting an error a lot about failed to start plugin ''.

There are no plugins installed on the system in qu and there  never have been.

Also, we can no longer right click on the panes to set options for them, this is a BIG knock back in my opion.
Letting us set it up with a main GUI is great but in place tweaking is also a very nice extra feature to have.
Both would be the ideal solution.

Greg,

Click on the Help menu, then About Media Center at the bottom.  The window that appears will show which version you are running.

Not really sure what version this started but...

When you first turn MC on, and play the first track, It hangs for about 10 seconds, THis only happens with the 1 st song. THis happens on my Home and Work computer.

Place the cursor over in the Rating column and scroll using the mousewheel.  Some ratings appear to change, though they return to previous state when you run the cursor over them again.

- When trying to convert a file(s) from within "Drives & Devices/My Computer/...",
it says that there are no files selected and jumps to my CD device.

It only starts converting this file(s) if I put them in Playing now first.

- No TV recording/timeshifting controls in hairstyle anymore

- No DVD controls in hairstyle anymore

Yes folks, I'm back after a long break. The new version 10 was just so good I had to buy it (more $$$ for you Jim).

Matt, any idea when the IRMAN plugin will become active.

I like the idea of MC10 doing IRMAN direct but old Girder still there if needed.

Keep up the great work.

not sure how long this one has been there.......

When a track finishes playing, it freezes the pc for about 20 seconds or so. Adding trackis to playing now whilst a track is already playing, causes no problems and I get continuous playing. It just sems to be when the curren track comes to an end.

Happy Christmas everybody....

Jim

Perhaps there is something else going on with my system, but,
MC10 seems very slow in saving tags, even to a local (Not mapped) drive.  This is with a small database (small local library with NO lyrics or bios) even when only tagging a couple of files at a time.

Also because of the way it saves once you make a move to a new field . . .having clicked elsewhere removes focus somehow, which means you cannot click on the confirmation dialog until you first click on the windows toolbar.  And if it stalls your system enough during the save, MC leave partial menu boxes on the screne that will not give up focus when choosing another application.

Hi Matt,

I also feel that v10 has slowed down alot.
(a) The action window is quite slow
(b) When clicking an Album (Album Thumbnail view) to play, it takes a long time to start and change the Playing Now List.
(c) My system have only 512MB memory, P4, I.3MHz.  Is this sufficient for v10?  It seems that MC is using more and more memory.

View Schemes and Grouping.

I can create a view scheme like:

GenreList  (custom)
GenreList  (custom)
Artist (grouped 1)
Artist
Album

Works great... until....

Quitting MC and restarting and my grouping from Artist is ALWAYS gone, the pane is there, but it's not grouped.

So I edit the VS and add the grouping back, quit and restart, and the grouping is gone.

Anyone else notice this?
