I believe this is a problem specific to this site and not with WM streaming in general.  Do you agree?

Jim, I checked this out yesterday as I have the digitalyextracted classical stream bookmarked.

They offer 2 choices of stream, wma & PLS, both in 3 choices of quality. The pls streams are fine, but none of the wma streams play in MC. My 1st thoughts were the same as yours. busy servers perhaps? but, the wma streams play perfectly in windows media player.

From this, I conclude that the problem is with MC, not the site. It would seem that not all wma streams are equal though, as, so long as ASIO is not enabled, this wma stream plays fine....

I have tried several WM streams that have worked before and none of them worked, but the one in the last post does work.

When we say that the "Real Radio Scotland" wma stream works, we mean we can hear it. In that respect, it's great.

If you open the stream in windows media player, the information area displays the radio station and its tagline ("Scotlands best variety of music and talk"). MC does not pick this information up, or at least, it doesn't display it. I notice that the digitally extracted streams are "sponsored". Is it possible the streams aren't working because MC is missing this stream info?

The latest 10 beta won't stream WM either.

What is the problem with wma streaming? Jim says it's a server problem. if it's a server problem, stick this on your clipboard....

Server problems? No.
Is it at all possible to look at MC's streaming media problems sometime soon? I know streaming webcontent, by its very nature, can be a flaky business, but surely the above test shows it's just plain not working in MC. I'm slightly concerned about this as the vibes from jriver seem to be of the "mc has no streaming media problems, look elsewhere for a fix" variety.
to me, it's not doing wma streaming correctly at the moment.

Okay, this is REALLY weird.

I just tried out stuff from the DigitallyImported site, and here's what I found:

1) The PLS streams work fine.
2) The ASX streams don't work at all if I just click on them directly from IE, but if I save the ASX file to my hard drive, then doubleclick, two things happen:
- MC attempts to go into visualization mode, then complains with an error message saying it can't use visualizations with that file type.
- It then plays the stream.

So I'm quite baffled.

Hokay.
The weblinks are opening for me here. Now, what prompted me to look deeper into this was the fact that with this install, I noticed that some windows media components were installed by the MC installer.

Did you make changes Matt? There were none mentioned.

The only problem now needing sorted is the media type detection. MC is categorising these wma streams as video, and changing them to audio does not bring on the vizualisations.

builds 25 & 26 are big steps in the right direction. silent changes, bet I'm not the only one grateful for the work in this area though.
