Strange errors on new build
« on: January 12, 2004, 01:56:25 pm »

I had this working fine on an old Win2000 box, but have been slowly building an XP box instead.  I can get my music to play over Tivo just using the Tivo desktop, but not with Media Center.

I can see the media center options on the tivo. I get to either "Media Library" or "Playlists."  If I select the library, I get a 3-5-6 error.  If I select the playlist, I can see all the play lists, but if I try to play one or  if I drive down to an actual song and try to play it, I get an error 1-5-6.

On the Media Server status, I can see all the connections, but never an error message.  I just get "TivoHTTP:  received a connection" followed by "TivoHTTP:  ready for another connection" over and over, for each time I go to a different menu selection on the tivo.

Until I get one of the two listed errors.  After that, I have to stop sharing and restart to see the media center selections on the tivo.

Any ideas???

Thanks,
Sean

Post your system info (under help).

Are you by any chance still running the old box with Media Server on the same network?

I am not running the old system.  The new build is on a new partition.

Check your TiVo settings. Do you need mp3 conversion?

Run media center on the same machine and connect to media server and
play a song to make sure the song works.

I changed this and it did not help.

I'm not sure how to do this.  How do you get media center to connect to media server?

Thanks,

How do you get media center to connect to media server?

This should be in the Help section of MC.  You do File/Library/Library Manager and add a server that has the address of the same PC the server is running on.

Huh, that works fine.  I.e. having media center on the same machine as media server fetch the songs from the server rather than directly.

But TIVO still gives me the 1-5-6 and 3-5-6 errors.  I even rebooted it just to see if that would help, but no dice.

Yes, all MP3s...  And I can play them just with Tivo Desktop.  But not using Media Center.  And it worked fine on the old build.  I will try on the old build again in a little while... (Reboot on that partition.)

Well, I rebooted on Win2K and it all worked fine.  But I still have the problem on XP.  There seems to be something about Media Server on XP to the Tivo

As a summary:

 - Media Center works fine as a stand alone on XP

 - Media Server works fine when I run Media Center
and have it connect to the server on the same PC

 - Tivo Desktop works fine by itself when I want to
listen to music on the TV using Tivo

 - Media Server does not work on the Tivo.  I can
see the playlists, but if I try to play them I get
an error 1-5-6.  If I go into the media library, I
   get error 3-5-6.

Any other ideas on what to look for/change?

I do have some other windows boxes on the network that I can install MC on and see if they can access Media Server on the XP build, though I suppose that is just like when I tried it all on the same box.

Thanks,
Sean

Try creating a new library with just one or two tracks in it. Can you play that?

I created a test library with just a couple of songs and get the same error when using media center/server.

Just FYI, but I tried javaHMO and it works fine too.  So it's only Media Center to the tivo on XP.  Media Center on 2000 works fine.

Hi Sean,

Sorry - my reply was meant for a different thread. I just read your last post and confused it with something else, thus my nonsensical reply.

I'm at a loss. I've had no one else report this, and I can't reproduce it.

You are running the same version of MC/Media Server on 2000 and XP, right? What else have you installed or changed on XP?

I've been downloading and installing new versions of all software as I build the new box.   Is there anything more I can do (debug) on my end?  I really like the features of jriver organization wise compared to tivo desktop or javahmo.  Javahmo weather and movies and such are nice, but that's not music, which is what I use this for the most.

Can you find another XP box, and try with that one? Maybe a friend with a laptop?

Could you send me your libaray (make a library backup and send the zip file).

The problem is on a desktop that was a win2k box and is now a winXP box -- well, it's partitioned so I can use either.  I have both a win2k laptop and a winxp laptop I can try this one.

Hi Sean,

I tried your library and it worked for me. The exact test was loading your library on to XP with 9.1.316, and connect from the TiVo and click on Media LIbary. It then shows the subtrees, and I can continue down a couple of levels.

It may be something on your system interfering. Use task manager to kill all extraneous tasks (especially tasks that might be serving to the TiVo).

Getting another XP machine onto the network would be very instructive I think.

I can get down to the point where I'm about to play the song or playlist before it fails.

It will be a week or two before I can do this due to some travel I have.

You said above that just clicking on "Media Library" was enough to make it fail.
Was this incorrect (or did I misinterpret it)?

If so, I'll try again.

Did you find any resolution on this problem?

I had MC 9.1.316 running on a Win2000 machine and streaming the libraried to my TIVO via HMO.  I recently got a new XP machine and moved my library over successfully.  MC seems the same and works fine.  TIVO cannot find the Media Server at all, but TIVO can see and play MP3s when I publish via the TIVO Desktop.  I have tried everything that I could find in all the discussion areas, but nothing makes a difference.  I have checked the ports on the XP machine and nothing other than Media Server is running on 80 and the TIVO Beacon is on 2190.

This is what the Media Server shows on startup:
01/31/04 16:04:18 - Initializing server.
01/31/04 16:04:18 - Server initialized
01/31/04 16:04:18 - sharer ready to accept connections
01/31/04 16:04:18 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
01/31/04 16:04:18 - TiVo HTTP ready for connections

And this is my system info:
Media Center Registered 9.1.316 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

  Drive E:   Copy mode:Normal   CD Type:Auto   Read speed:Max
Digital playback: Yes /  Use YADB: Yes /  Get cover art: Yes /  Calc replay gain: Yes /  Copy volume: 32767
Eject after ripping: Yes /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive D: SAMSUNG  CD-R/RW SW-252S    Addr: 0:0:0  Speed:32  MaxSpeed:48  BurnProof:Yes
  Drive E: TEAC     DVD+RW DV-W58E     Addr: 0:1:0  Speed:32  MaxSpeed:32  BurnProof:Yes
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: Yes /  Write CD-Text: No

Any ideas would be much appreciated.  I really miss my MC on TIVO!!  :'(

Check that your Media Server settings are "Support TiVo HMO on port 8079 with beacon on port 2190".

Stop and restart Media Server to make sure it is communicating with TiVo's beacon.

Yup.  It is set to Support TiVo HMO on port 8079 with beacon on port 2190 and I restarted it with no luck.

Any other ideas much appreciated.

You restarted just Media Server, right? Not the whole machine.

Make sure that TiVo's server is not running (except for the beacon).

Try adding the IP address of the server manually.

Try running TiVo from port 80 (this takes a minute or so before the TiVo will notice it).

You are right, I just restarted Media Server.  Tivo Server is not running, just the Tivo Beacon.

I tried adding the server by IP address.  No luck.  Then I tried changing to the port 80 setup in Media Server.  Also no luck.

I am not sure what else to try.

Thanks again!

Shut down Media Server. In a DOS window type "netstat -an | more" and look for
port 8079, it should not be there. 2190 may or may not be there.

Then start Media Server. In the DOS window do the command again. Port 8079
should be there, and 2190 too.

From a different machine on the same network (if you have one) type
telnet <ip> 8079<enter>
GET / HTTP/1.1<enter>
<enter>

and let me know what you get back.

I tried connecting via telnet and could not.  Then I realized that I had Norton Internet Security on the XP machine.  But disabling it didn't help.  When I checked the network settings in XP, I found the problem.  When XP installs, it sets up the Internet access with the built-in internet connection firewall option turned on.  It looks like when the Tivo server installs, it adds entries to open the appropriate ports.  It doesn't seem like Media Server does the same.  I added an entry to open TCP port 8079 on the machine.  And now everything (except my ACC files from the iTunes store, but that is a different issue) works on my Tivo HMO!

Thanks for the help on ferreting this out.
