Chirping noise with 8.0.400
« on: January 15, 2004, 04:46:59 pm »

I just updated to MJ 8.0.400. Noticed that some .ape files
started making some chirping noise which was not with 8.0.393.
I converted .ape to .wav and same thing.
Funny thing is that same wav file does not
produce same chirping when playing with Media Player or GoldWave.
I am using M-Revo 7.1 sound card.

What may be going on with MJ?

Is the chirp occuring randomly or does it seem to occur at regular intervals (ie every 10 sec's). Is your software as up to date as possible (inc. soundcard drivers). What playback mode are you using (WaveOut/DirectSound/ASIO)? Does it occur with lower bitrate files (ie mp3)? If you can't nail down the problem and you still have the 393 build, I would just re-install 393 back over the top of 400. All the 39x builds were solid with very minor bug fixes. I'm still running 396 at home.

10-27

edit: It may have something to do with the ape format as well, which went from 3.96 to 3.97 recently (or 3.97 to 3.98). Matt may have some ideas on this.

Noise is with many song. I have not noticed a pattern.

As I had mentioned noise was noticed after I updated
with .ape file. My suspicion was APE but then I decoded to WAV.
WAV also produced the same noise.
I My suspicion was that my file has problem, so I tried to
edit it in GoldWave. But GodWave did not produced the noise.
I tried the WAV in media player - again, no noise.
Same file on another computer running 393 plays it fine.
I did not change anything on the computer.
All files have been 3.97 APE.

My computer is not a slow one (P4 2.4 GHz with 768 MB of RAM).

Only reason I updated because I wanted to burn CDs directly
from  APE files (Nero does work on my machine). MJ 8.0.393
produced nothing but coasters. I was advised to update MJ.

I do not have MJ build 393.

Any setting changes someone can suggest in MJ or in my computer?

It sounds like a sound card driver problem.  Try switching playback settings in MJ.  ASIO or WAV Out.
