VBR does not play properly

Can you start a thread on this?  I don't think this is a bug.

Situation is that a RealOne and Nero, just two examples, play VBR 192 - The album is Quantic, The 5th Exotic - without a glitch.
MC (version 8, 9, 10) does not, i.e. the beats sound like on the verge of a heart attack (sorry for this metaphor).

What format? Where did the files come from? What software was used to encode the files?

VBR 192

Not sure what you mean by this. Generally a file is either VBR or it is CBR (constant bitrate), like 192kbps. 80-90% of my library is VBR files in various formats and I have no problems playing them in MC10.

I used RealOne.
VBR 192 means ~192: Real calls this average Bitrate.
(Usually I use Real for mp3 encodings, MC for ogg.)

I "saved the tracks" (Real) from my CD to PC with Real's VBR ~192.

Uploading the file (5MB) to this forum would probably be against forum rules, let alone, hm, illegal?

Oh. That's what I thought everyone called it (ABR for short). That's why I was confused when you said VBR.

Anyway, did you disable Real's drm/copy protection (assuming it has an option to disable it) when you ripped the tracks? I suppose there might be a possibility that it could cause playback problems.

The CD was/is not protected, I can play the file on my mobile phone, so I assume no drm/cp.
I'm gonna rip it again, with MC and with Real, and check.

Thanks

I ripped it again. (BTW MC plays the CD correctly).
Ripper: Real,
   VBR/ABR 192 and 160
Real, Nero play them ok, MC doesn't, at both rates
mp3utility detects a sync error in the 192, but not the 160, anyway
since MC stumbles irrespective of the rate I don't know what
   to make of that.

Ripper: MC
   VBR high
MC plays it fine, Real, Nero too.

But now the strange bit. As a baseline I ripped at constant BR 192 and 160 respectively, no errors according to mp3util. SAME results, i.e. MC stumbles, the other players don't (2 on my PC, 2 on my phone).

Is it time to give up?

I wasn't talking about copy protection on the cd. Real maybe/probably has an option to enable/disable copy protection that is added during encoding. However, it sounds like this probably isn't the problem.

Try posting your system info (Help/System Info), maybe someone will see something there that could be causing problems for you.

That sounds like a non-standard format.  Can you play the files with any other player?
