Please Remove the Titlebar when in Windowed Mode
« on: January 29, 2004, 02:27:17 am »

I posted about this a few months ago, but I figured that since we are now on version 10, I'd ask again...

Can we *PLEASE* have the option of hiding the title bar when running in "windowed" mode?  Every other application allows this one way or another.  Sometimes you hit a key to hide/show the title...sometimes you right-click it...sometimes it is a button.  The titlebar takes up far too much space and is almost useless -- with the exception of moving the window, most of the funtionality is duolicated in the popup toobar.

What is it good for?  You can click minimize...but why would you want to?  We could toggle the titlebar back to do this.  You can click the "maximize" button...which *really* makes it fullscreen and doesn't "maximize" it at all (maximize is supposed to make the window take up the brunt of the desktop at the current resolution).  You can also go to fullscreen from the pop-up toolbars...so the functionality is not only confusing, it is redundant.  You can click the "Close" button in the titlebar too...but again this doesn't adhere to convention since it takes you from "windowed" mode to what is now called "standard mode".  It *should* close the application, shouldn't it?  One could argue that it is really a "detached" window and you are merely closing the detached window...I won't argue the point.  Either way, this is *also* available from the pop-up toolbar...again, redundant functionality.

So...here is what I would like to see:

- Let the user toggle on and off the titlebar like other applications.  this would allow the user to use the titlebar as they do today...but only have to see it when they need it.

...or...

- lose the titlebar all together...it is not like it displays what is playing or anything (not sure why not)
- allow the user to move the window by clicking anywhere on it (like other applications)
- scaling the window would stay the same
- both "maximize" and "close" are duplicated on the popup toolbar so they require no change at all
- add the "minimize" fucntionality to the toolbar or lose it all together (I won't miss it)

The main reason I (and I assume others) use windowed mode is because we are working on other things...otherwise it would be full screen.  Making the window small enough to take up minimal space while large enough to still watch is already an irritating balancing act.  The title bar just makes it more frustrating since it takes up a large chunk of the small window and is virtually USELESS (as I pointed out above).

In every release you tweak the action window or the searchbar or some other thing. Please, please, please take a few minutes and address this little interface issue.

Thanks for listening, er, reading...

[Edit: perhaps a new title will help get a response?  Maybe the one I used wasn't specific enough...]

I'm a little confused. ? I don't have a titlebar. And what is this "pop-up toolbar" you speak of?

Rob

Edit:

Are you using one of the Windows skins? If so, I would venture to say then that whether or not a titlebar is displayed depends on whether or not a particular skin happens to have one or not. I'm using the Z skin right now, and there is no titlebar. And by "pop-up toolbar" I guess you mean menu bar.

Thomas,

removing title bar gets my vote as well....

plus add an standard view toolbar button that opens windowed mode without having to go to playing now first

OIC. I didn't even know that existed. I rarely ever switch to Playing Now view.

Yes, easier access to Windowed Mode would be great. I'd like to be able to specify that the view switch to Windowed Mode when a video is launched...

Dang... I just typed a nice long & detailed reply to this and lost it before posting :(  Since I have other things to do, I'm not going to type the whole lot again, just a quick summary:

* Subject of this thread is confusing, I was thinking of the main MC window - suggest changing to "Titlebar in MCPlayingNow Windowed Mode"  (MCPlayingNow to distinguish from PlayingNow plugin?)

* I agree with just about all the posts here

* 'Windowed Mode' is a hidden oyster at the moment... quite often overlooked (not very prominent, and very little in the help - eg. the only info on doubleclicking to go to fullscreen from this mode is under "TV Tuner/Display Modes")... and needs the addition of a couple of features (the sand grain :)) to make it a pearl.

* Would be nicer with no title bar - only a small frame around whole picture - a great example would be a video player called BSPlayer

* BSPlayer also has mouse use that would be great in the 'Windowed Mode' - left click pauses, left doubleclick goes to fullscreen (same as MC), left click and drag anyone on the window drags it around screen (without pausing - left click and left click/drag are treated as two different commands), rightclick - menu (same as MC), mouse wheel - windowed mode: resize window (I think BSPlayer resizes with the mouse wheel better than other players I've tried... it would be nice to have a similar quality here) - fullscreen: changes volume (though it can be configured to do anything) - (holding down left button and using mouse wheel in windowed mode also changes the volume).

No... this isn't an ad for BSPlayer... if I loved it that much I wouldn't be here, would I? :) Just an honest opinion of quailities I think would help make the 'Windowed Mode' more usuable

* Finally and pretty important is an 'Always on top' mode... what use is the window if it's under everything else? :)

Drowbe, it'd be a great feature when watching films in a little box in the corner of your screen as your doing other stuff. Get rid of that wee bit of extra space.

Cant see it getting added though :(

WMP does this though so just use that, it's PERFECT for video playback, both in small mode and playback, it has a lot of little features like this that just make it mmmmm to use. Give it a try, it's GREAT.

I agree with the proposals made here, I would also like to be able so set what mode videos start in. i.e. set video to start in windowed (and not minimise MC) so I can scan the clip before full screening it or choose another video one from MC.

I don't get it...I've posted a thoughtful, detailed message about removing the titlebar in wondowed mode.  I clearly explained the reasoning behind the request.  I would think that *someone* from JRiver would have  popped in and said *something* about it..."Good idea...we'll consider it"..."It can't be done"..."It won't be done
Thomas,
We don't usually reply to suggestions, but it doesn't mean anything.  We have an agenda.  Sometimes suggestions work their way onto it.

It isn't design by committee.
