Does anyone know what is going on here ?
I have used this tweak before with no problems but this time it destroyed my Win XP operating system.
The setting in question is…
System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Advanced.
In the center of the screen there is an option called… Default Memory Usage.
There are two check boxes…
Default is… Programs.
I set it to… System Cache.
What happen shortly after selecting System Cache, a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the center started showing up on the Task bar. It had no text to tell me what it was for. I would delete it & a little while later it was back.
I then started getting dialog box messages saying something about “Write behind save… all data was lost. Save your work”. How funny, as all data was already lost.
Slowly, things started to act weird, & some items no longer worked or hung up.
I did a restore & all was well again. I did not associate the System Cache setting with the problem at this time so I re-set it. Yep, you guessed it, the little yellow triangle was back.
After going through this three times, the system became so unstable that I could not do any other restores as I could not get into Safe Mode to access it. So I had to format the drive & re-install Win XP.
Another 48 hours gone down the XP drain.
The question is… why did System Cache work before & not now?
