Problems after install of MC9 (deinstall of MP8)
« on: February 10, 2004, 10:47:45 am »

Hello,

Env: Dell D800 laptop with XP Pro (all patches installed)

Yesterday I downloaded MC9.  In the install, I opted (bad choice?) to de-install MP8 that I had been using for a long time.  The install seemed fine.

Since the install (several reboots in between), I seem to have some strange behavior:

Clicking on a Media Player link within Amazon.com causes MC9 to come up and present an Information message saying

"File C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Media Scheduler.exe" is not found"  <OK>

Underneath this message is another (from Windows) indicating that

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Media Jukebox.exe is attempting to change or view this computer's internet connection protection settings.......
The options are Yes, No and More Info.

If I hit "No", the message goes away.  If I then hit "OK" on the message about Media Scheduler, it seems to play the music clip repeatedly.

On subsequent clicks on the same or other music clips (still in Amazon), even after restarting Media Center, I get a another Media Center message saying

"Please select file(s) to play"  <OK>

This message comes right on top of the message from above

"File C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Media Scheduler.exe" is not found"  <OK>

If I click "OK" on both messages, nothing further happens and no music is played.

Can anyone shed any light on what I am doing wrong here?

BTW - I have no third party plug-ins (out of the box install).

Thanks.

Haven't heard of this before.

I'd backup your library then uninstall MJ / MC and remove any left over MJ / MC files in your C:\Program Files directory. (if there are any)

Then restart.

Then reinstall the latest MC 9 or MC 10 (in beta at the top of the board).

Let us know.

Thanks Matt.

I will reinstall MC9 because I would like to get a production quality install working right first at least.

I did the uninstall and told it to NOT delete the library files.  Was that correct or not?

After the uninstall, should I still have the following directories with a "data" sub-dir and files inside?

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox

If I delete the whole C:\Program Files\J River directory, will that mean I will need to reimport all my albums?

Note: Another issue I may get on re-import is that whenever an album has been ripped to Real Media format (rmj), any attempt to view the files in MC9 (or MJ8 actually) results in a dialog box appearing that asks if I want to install the latest Real One Player (9.1Mb).  Up to now, I have always said no.  I don't think MP8 used to do that a while ago.

Thanks again.

OK - So I deleted the J River directory.
Reinstalled MC9
Then I reimported all the music in my "My Music" directory
After a while, it threw up the dialog telling me to install the RealPlayer 10 beta software.

Is this something I have to answer yes to for MC9 to work and the import to complete?

Thx

The FAQ near the top of this board has a link to a RealPlayer install.

Well actually, my install is waiting on me to select whether I want to download this Real Player 10 beta.  This is what popped up during the import of my music.

Are you suggesting that I should cancel out of this and do a different Real Player install at this point?

Would I now have to remove the music imported so far and start the install again?

Thx

Don't install it.  Install RP8 from our link.

Thanks!

I deinstalled MC9 and then installed RP8 from your link.

I've now done the reinstall of MC9 again and reimported.  This time the import went dtraight through!

However...

As soon as MC9 started, it reported the message:

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Media Scheduler.exe is not found.

Do I need to install Media Scheduler seperately?  Also, why is it looking in Media Jukebox sub dir?  I uninstalled MJ8 during first install of MC9.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what's going on.  Maybe Media Scheduler was set to run on Windows start-up?

In MC file associations, there is a check box for "Always take control of file types..." .  Try unchecking it.

Interesting (and successful)!

I went to file associations and the 'take control' box was NOT checked.
I checked the box and exited MC9
I restarted MC9 and the message about Media Scheduler did NOT now appear!
Also, Media Scheduler is now running in the icon tray and it seems to restart correctly each time I load MC (even if I stopped ir previously).

It seems that MC9 is happy for now.

Thanks very much for all your help.
