Ripping multiple CD's in one session
« on: February 11, 2004, 04:56:10 pm »

I used to be able to rip and rip and rip, until I was done, then it would try to find cover art, etc.  Now, I have to rip one CD, find art, close, rip one CD, find art close, etc for each CD seperately.

I thought I read that 'continuous ripping' (or whatever it was called) was on by default in v10, but it does not seem to be the case with me.  MC tells me to either close the dialog or insert a new CD when it's done ripping, but inserting a new CD does nothing, so I have to close, and restart.  Is there something I'm missing, or is this not possible anymore?

Thanks

I'm sorry.  I guess I just assume everyone upgrades everyday.   10.0.66 (which is building towards 10.1 very quickly) ;)

I had the same with all the 10.0.builds with the new Action Window.
Continuous ripping is not possible anymore!

Same here.  I use secure ripping and the dialog comes up right away rather than after ripping a whole bunch of CDs and pressing Done. The old way was MUCH faster.  Glad I ripped most of my collection before the change.

I wonder if that'll change any time soon.  I have about  300 CDs left to re-rip in ape format.

I would really love it if I could just rip them all in one session (well, a few sessions) and when I was done, it could just encode, find art, and update database in the background.  I bet I could get  75 to 100 ripped in a couple/few hours of studious dedicated ripping, then another couple hours to 'finish up'.

I do all the enconding and finding cover art at once. You don't win much time doing it in the background. Well if your PC is fast !

You have 300 CD's to go, good luck.  ;D

How do you do all encoding at once?

Options -> Ecoding -> click on rip and code simultaneously.
Or do you mean something else?

I waisted most time on issues with YADB. The actual ripping & coding is almost flawless. It would be great if more CD's could be ripped at the same time. That would save a lot of time.

No, I meant I want to just rip all CDs in a sitting, then stop ripping and have MC get album info, encode, find art, etc later, while I do something else.  It doesn't take too long to rip, if that's all you do, then it can finish in the background.  Does that make more sense?

I waisted most time on issues with YADB. The actual ripping & coding is almost flawless.

You hit the nail on the head for me, I've still got about 1,500 CDs to rip and the issues with YADB have been pretty frustrating. For instance, if I rip and encode simultaneously, my CDs are usually ejected before the encode is finished. If I don't wait until all CDs are done and the status window goes away (I always use secure ripping) YADB goes into some sort of access loop that I usually have to force quit out of MC to escape.

Besides fixing that bug, it would be nice to have the log file be saved automatically to a selected destination as each rip is completed. This way, after a rip session, I can view the file and determine what needs to be re-ripped. An option to select save log file to a location or pop up after rip would work for me. Option one would be extremely valuable for large ripping sessions, while option 2 would work for day-to-day use.

The other issue is that I don't want the CD to rip if YADB doesn't find it, I want to be able to eject the CD and put in another. Right now there is an "If no matches are found, show CD submission dialog" option, if there was an "If no matches are found, eject CD" option, I think I'd be set. I have no problem submitting to YADB, but I don't type, so it isn't going to happen that way and with 1500 plus CDs left to rip, I've got a lot on my plate. However, there is other software out there that will use other databases that will save their info locally in various formats. If MC supported accessing this info, YADB would grow considerably I would think, certainly from my collection.

I know that that is what you mean. It would be a good thing yes. Doing all the ripping first and all the other things later. Only problem if you can't find CD's in YADB.
My suggestion would be to do thing's like finding cover's during the ripping or encoding, why at the end of the rip session?

Quisp
I also use secure rip. My wish would also be to have MC to tell me which CD/songs to te-rip. Don't think the feature is there yet. On the other hand, since the new action window all rips are a full 100%. There always used to be rip's with less then 100%. Is this a bug or a better way of ripping?
Can these songs with faults during the rip session be tagged and reripped in a special session, but later?

All your other suggestions make sense to me!!

Yeah, I've been wondering about the 100% rips, too. I'll post a separate thread about it.
