Why things are moving slowly
« on: March 08, 2004, 06:48:04 pm »

In addition to problems reported on Interact, we're working on fixing other problems found by a QA firm who works for A Customer.

A lot of nits are being picked so the outcome should be a Very Clean Version.  It's tedious, but it should be over in another week or so.

By the end of the month, we will release MC and be able to go back to adding features.

We will do a little price promotion in a few days that will last at least until the release of MC10.

Thanks for your patience.

Jim

I can only see this as a HUGE advantage for me....

The more people you have looking at piece of software, the more changes that are made and usually the more stable it becomes...

So, if the reason you are (as you say) slow, I say, keep crawling along.......

Will the bugs fixed in this process be reported in the bug fixed lists with new releases?

It's actually been really great to see in the last few builds less new features and more nit-picky bug fixes. "Very Clean Versions" are what I want, and I assume what most customers want.
Thanks for the info, Jim, and thanks everyone for the hard work, it's appreciated.

Scott.

ps. I'm just about to start trying Media Center under WINE... has anybody had any success?

It would be about time they released a product that didn't suck!

Unfortunately, this will certainly mean no aac files for sale  :-[

Oh, well.  i don't buy much music online anyway.

It's actually been really great to see in the last few builds less new features and more nit-picky bug fixes. "Very Clean Versions" are what I want, and I assume what most customers want.

I'm sure there are lots of customers of both ilk.  One's who want more features and ones who want stability and robustness.  Most of the time I'm in the latter category.  I usually find it more frustrating when MC is supposed to do "X" but doesn't do it correctly or ACCVIOs than when MC is rock solid but missing feature "Y".  But that doesn't stop me from asking for feature "Y".  I want to have my cake and eat it too like everyone else.  :)

As a business strategy, simply fixing bugs and not adding features isn't going to bring in many new customers (or revenue).  Look at the trend in software product version numbers (major.minor).  When is the last time you saw a product with a minor version above, say 5?  Netscape 4.7 -- circa 1999?

There was a time when shipping a ".0" release was rare.  Customers shied away from them due to instability concerns.  It took major new features to justify an increment in the major version.  Now ".0" release are all the rage and sometimes include few if any meaningful new features.  I'm not suggesting this is the case for MC.  But it does seem to be the trend for the software industry in general.
